On January 7th in Paris, France, two masked gunmen invaded the building and offices of the weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo during a meeting with the editors. The gunman started firing shots while shouting the phrase “Allahu Akbar,” which is Arabic for “God is great.” Twelve people were killed and eleven were injured. The shooters were later revealed to be brothers Cherif and Saïd Kouachi. A third suspect was reported to have been part of the shooting as well, although no charges were reported. Charlie Hebdo is known for its cartoons and jokes that mock culture, the news, and many different religions including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Recent cartoons in the newspaper depicting Muhammad were known to have upset many Muslims and ultimately inspire the attack. On January 11, more than 2 million people were in Paris for a rally of national unity to remember the 17 victims. The surviving staff of Charlie Hebdo continue to publish their weekly newspaper.
Weird weather... staff reporter

It should come as no surprise to students of Lakeside that winter brings about the possibility for snow days, but this year there have been snow days across the country, even in Arizona. Much of the recent snow and cold weather in the northern United States is due to a polar vortex. A polar vortex is the result of air currents in North America being cut off from the main jet stream and due to being in the north it has a lot of cold air. The south has experienced extreme cold as well. A massive snow storm early this month brought snow to Arizona, Nevada, California, and many other locations that see very little snow year round, suddenlt experiencing up to two feet of snow. The new year has been rung in by the standard blast of cold temperatures, but they are colder and more far reaching than usual.

In previous years, Lakeside’s forensics team has gained more and more attention due to their outstanding placements in the state competition. As the 2015 season begins, the team hopes to live up to last year’s first place title at the state competition. Last week, over thirty students auditioned in hopes to join the prestigious forensics team. Students initially tried out before winter break to be put in a category, and tried out
in front of Mr. Lauber and his father to see if they have what it takes to succeed in competition. Some of the categories of forensics include public address, solo acting, group acting, poetry, and prose. With the wide variety of categories, most everyone can find a place where their speaking talents can shine. Initial cuts were made upon last weeks tryouts, and more were made after Tuesday’s mock competition at Lakeside. At this “competition”
participants recited their piece in from of their peers and were given criticism from Mr. Lauber. The remaining participants will travel to Brookfield Central High School on Saturday to see how they perform in a real competition. Returning forensics participants are very excited for this meet because last year, the high school provided food, a free photo booth, and karaoke. Mr. Lauber and the forensics team hope to see success in their future and have high hopes for this year’s season.

So, you had a bad day “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” staff reporter

On Tuesday, forensics participants practiced their pieces in front of peers to prepare for the season.
Everyone has bad days, a bad grade on a test, a crushing defeat in a sport’s game, trouble with friends, an overwhelming amount of homework. Sometimes life’s troubles push one farther and farther into sadness and despair. But Christians have an advantage when it comes to these situations. They know exactly where to turn when it seems like there’s no other way out, Jesus. As the passage states, God writes these comforting words to his people so that his joy may be in them, and therefore their joy may be complete. By simply opening a Bible, and reading a few of these uplifting words, one can turn their devastating day into a worthwhile one. When Jesus lived on earth, he went through every hardship students go through today. Therefore, he knows exactly how to relate to their problems. By simply adding God’s Word to the equation, anyone having a bad day can turn their frown upside down, and their joy will be complete.
Seniors prepare to go their seperate ways for college CNN

College plans are one of the big things most seniors are thinking of right now. Where will they go, will they get accepted, how will they pay for it, etc. No one really knows the answer to these questions. Students just have to trust themselves that they have the abilities to do certain things. College is a huge step in life. If the plan is for a good life, a family, and wealth, then be prepared to work hard in the coming years. Most people do not just come out of high school ready for life. They walk out of the door after graduation into the real world and then they get hit by the truck that is reality. College is not free. Nothing in life is free. Life does not really give out lemons to people. The one way
around the big expense of money is to get scholarships or grants from colleges and/or companies that are willing to pay. Scholarships can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars per semester. They might even be generous enough to pay for the entire college cost. The easiest ways to get the money like that is if one’s ACT or SAT scores are incredibly good. If they turn out to be a 20-21 or a 1500, that is fairly good, but if it is possible that someone pulls out a perfect 36 or 2400, then almost any college will be willing to give a free ride. Seniors are already getting accepted to the colleges of their choices. They have told friend and family alike of where they are going to go. They have their majors chosen and know what they will to do in the future. Emily Olson and Sam
Anthon have already been given sports scholarships. Emily Olson was given a huge scholarship to George Washington University for rowing. Sam Anthon was given scholarships to play volleyball at Green Bay. Sydney Gronemeyer has been accepted early decision to her dream school of Vanderbilt University in Nashville and was given a half-ride for academics. Winter Petry most likely will attend Baylor University in Texas. However, these are only the some of the standout college bound students. Many other students such as Michelle Draeger have been accepted to MLC and many more students have been accepted to various UW schools. Many other seniors also plan to serve their country after graduation and join the Marines of Air Force. College is a big thing to do and getting in is just the start.
