MRSA infects team G Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection

Two friends enter the locker room after a difficult practice. One says to the other, “Thanks for letting me use your towel today.” The other responds, “It is the least I could do to repay you for letting me use you shorts.” These teens do not know it, but they have just made themselves susceptible to a Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection.

According to a Lakeside representative, the MRSA infection first showed itself at Lakeside about three weeks ago. This irritating skin bacteria has now affected several varsity football players and could be spread very easily throughout the rest of the team. The infection is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that has become resistant to common staph infection antibiotics. The type of infection that has been trou-

bling Lakeside athletes is referred to as community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA), to differentiate it from the more common healthcare-associated MRSA which plagues many hospitals and nursing homes. MRSA infections begin with painful boils or pimple-like sores on the skin, and can become infected, burrow into the body and cause damage to bones, joints, wounds, the heart, the lungs and the bloodstream. “It spreads through direct contact with open areas, such as skin, blood, pus, sweat…” states Lakeside athletic trainer Julie Neppl. This puts players of contact sports at a higher risk of a CA-MRSA infection than other students. Fortunately, prevention is easy and can stop MRSA in its tracks. “Prevention is hygene. Wash your hands... don’t share towels,

water bottles or lockers.” advises Julie Neppl. Though most students have been lucky to avoid this infection, some are not so lucky. Senior Luke Thiele states, “I had to have surgery and I missed a game… but I still played after I got it.” Thankfully, though it is infectious and uncomfortable, the Lakeside MRSA infections can be healed and prevented. freedigitalphotos.net

of people do not wash their hands long enough to kill infection-causing bacteria, according to a new study. Most of the subjects scrubbed their hands an average of 6 seconds, as opposed to the recommended 15 to 20 seconds.

From a very young age, children are taught to be nice to each other, but as we grow older, it gets harder. Differences become more pronounced, we learn to hate, and before long we only want to talk to a handful of close friends and people who are nice to us. In this verse, Jesus encourages us to break that cycle. He tells us to love our enemies; those who tease us, hurt us, ignore us, call us names, Jesus tells us to love and pray for them, “that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” Loving others, particularly those who are mean to us, is an essential and useful skill to master before graduating into the world. Unbelievers will see that we care for others, even our enemies, and will wonder why. Through our loving actions, the Holy Spirit can bring people to saving faith. This, and the fact that Jesus loves all people, including people who wanted to kill him, and gave his life to save the world from sin should make it much easier for us to love our enemies.

Homecoming on the horizon

The week of Homecoming is just about here and students all over Lakeside are buzzing with excitement. There are so many activities for every student to enjoy next week. The Homecoming week actually starts out this Friday when many seniors will be auctioned off for other students to buy. After someone purchases a senior they can dress them up however they want the next Monday. The Homecoming week itself starts out on Monday with a special dress-up day. The freshmen and sophomores will dress up as little kids, by maybe putting pig-tails in their hair or wearing overalls, and the juniors and seniors will dress up as senior citizens by wearing glasses and carrying around canes. Tuesday is class color day, the freshmen wear orange shirts, the sophomores pink, the juniors yellow, and the seniors lime green. One should make sure to go and support the Warrior Football team as they face off Luther Prep and then join in on the fun Saturday night at the Homecoming dance.
