In national news: Ebola virus staff reporter

Hannah Varney

The morning begins with simply an unwell feeling. There is no appetite to be found and a headache ensues along with a sore throat and slight fever. At first the virus strikes ever so innocently, but within days, the symptoms of a victim of the Ebola virus can go from worry-free to extremely deadly. Eventually the body becomes filled with aches and pains,

The horrific ebola virus causes a nasty rash covering the skin. a high fever develops along with vomiting, diarrhea, and internal bleeding, and the immune system itself attacks every organ of the body. The Ebola virus attacks the same cells in the body that the AIDS virus attacks, but it kills them much more aggressively. It is hard to determine exactly where one received the virus from, being that it can take anywhere from two to twenty-one days for symptoms to appear. The illness is just as contagious as influenza and is spread through direct and indirect contact of any bodily fluid. The recent outbreak of Ebola is one of the largest in history and the first ever in West Africa. It is believed that this outbreak started with a 2-year-old patient in a village in Guinea. The child, along with various family members, showed symptoms of Ebola and died four days later. The contagion has claimed 1,145 lives and has infected more than 2,000 across three countries – Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea – in just five months. Fruit bats are believed to be the virus’s natural host. Fortunately, the United States has received some reassuring news from the Center for Disease Control which stated, “The outbreak in West Africa is worsening, but CDC, along with other U.S. government agencies and international partners, is taking steps to respond to this rapidly changing situation. Ebola poses no substantial risk to the U.S. general population.”

In the August of 1979 Lakeside met Thomas “Louie” Stallman for the first time as he began his first year at Lakeside as a custodian. Now, 35 years later, Lakeside said goodbye to an iconic symbol of this school. When last school year ended so did the career of Louie, Lakeside’s beloved fix-it-all handy man. When asked what he will miss the most all Louie had to say was, “Most of all the kids, defiantly what I am going to miss are the kids.” “I’m tired of getting bossed around by the clock, that’s why I’m quitting,” Louie said when

Dr. G has been a part of the Lakeside family for as long as anyone can remember. He joined the family a hefty 41 years ago and served as the guidance counselor every year, up until this year. His presence and his wisdom is being missed by all. Dr. G said his most memorable moment was “the day a

student rode his motorcycle down the hallway.” Most of his great memories come from coaching. Dr. G was coach of the wrestling team for many years--and his wrestlers succeeded greatly. He took so much pride and joy in seeing two of his wrestlers place in the state tournament. He also took pride in leading his 1983 football team to the state championship. Although he had so many good memories, he decided to retire because “[He] felt it was time to move on to the next phase of [his] life and see what the LORD has in store for [him]”. He will spend his time pursuing his love of travel and photography. He also plans to spend much more time with his wife. In closing thought, Dr. G addresses the school and staff: “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Lord all of these years. I have enjoyed and will miss the students. I have also enjoyed working with Christian colleagues. The Christian work atmosphere is one of the real blessings of serving the Lord in his ministry. I am also thankful to my wife and family for supporting me through the sports I coached and being patient as I pursued my graduate schooling.”

The future is scary editor-in-chief

Sydney Gronemeyer

The start of every new school year brings on new stressors and worries for every student. A freshman may be worried about joining clubs, making new friends, or keeping up in class. A sophomore or junior may stress over increasingly difficult courses, more homework, and maybe finding a job. A senior might worry about applying to colleges, for scholarships, and figuring out what they want to do with their life. School is stressful. The future is scary. There is no denying or getting around this fact. Thinking about how to make it through high school and what you are going to do afterwards can be extremely overwhelming. Thankfully, God already has a handle on everything anyone worries about. All that needs to be done, is trust God. God says that if we commit all of our plans to him, he will work it out. This means that if we focus on following what God wants us to do rather than on what we want to do, he will make sure it turns out well. Also, in high school, some troubles seem never-ending. Drama and setbacks seem impossible to conquer and one can begin to lose hope. A major cause of depression is one’s feeling that there troubles will never end and that they will never be able to move on. But God reminds us that he will work everything out to it’s proper end. Everything that one may be going through is only temporary--these troubles will not last forever. God has a plan. So, remain hopeful. Do not worry about what will happen in the future, but just simply follow God. Then he will work everything out for you.
