LLHS Regents Chair, Glenn Lassanske ‘83 Last July, I had the pleasure of touring LLHS with 22 of my classmates and many of their spouses as part of our reunion festivities. To be honest, I toured mostly to watch how they reacted to all the changes since we graduated— I was not disappointed! Most had not walked the halls since graduation 40 years ago, but when they entered the building, you would have thought it was last week. Those that toured continued to talk about those memories that flooded back. It was a reminder of how strong the bonds formed at Lakeside Lutheran are and how blessed we were—all those years ago—to have spent 4 years of our lives together there, no matter how different it looks, inside or outside.

As the chairman of our Board of Regents, I’m thankful for the opportunity to frequently witness the many blessings being poured on Lakeside. Perhaps it’s the dedicated members of the different boards guiding improvements of our financial, facility, and educational areas. It’s certainly in the growth and successes of our student body in academics, faith life, music, and athletics.

I see our entire staff ’s dedication to teaching our students, not only in academics and extracurricular activities but also in living a Christ-centered life—this shows every time I walk through the halls during a school day or hear comments from visitors who were so impressed that they wanted to share their experiences with me.

I’m thankful for all who support this Christian ministry: the network of federation congregations, Twice Is Nice Resale Store and its volunteers, the many parents who sacrifice so their children can have a Christian education.

And thank you, my fellow alum, for all you do to keep our high school a place where we can still gather, in fellowship and pride of where we were blessed to spend those formative years of our lives. LLHS is blessed to have individuals, families and groups using their God-given talents and gifts in support of our mission.

As Senior Class President, Glenn Lassanske (St. John, Watertown) has been on his reunion committee for 40 years, a self-described “life sentence” he enjoys. He lives in Watertown with wife Lori; they have 2 alum, Adam ‘13 and Lauren ‘17). He fits in serving on a Lakeside board—something else he’s been doing for decades—around a busy work schedule as a materials handling industry sales manager for Kardex Remstar and as much time as he and family can in the northwoods near Crandon, Wis. We are so grateful for his support and service!

At a total project cost of ~$70,000, the majority of the video studio remodel occurred June to August 2023. The existing ceiling was removed, the entire room was painted; twenty feet of new upper and lower cabinets were added.

21 computer-controlled DMX lighting fixtures were installed for 3 new, custom-built interview sets (L–R: brick and wood slats, dark blue slats, brick-look). A new cyclorama green screen set was also installed. Benefits have already been seen in Lakeside Loop student newscasts, Homecoming videos, and videography class projects!

JV2 football and will co-head coach Track Jamie Arndt Our new Food Service Director joined the kitchen team as an assistant last year and when the director position opened, “there was a need and I decided to step up” she says. She also heads the studentled Board Game Club. Jaime and Shaun (pastor at federation partner Peace in Sun Prairie), have two Warrior sons: junior Isaiah and frosh Daniel.

Amanda Brock Amanda joins the front office team as attendance secretary and administrative assistant.

“I am excited to start meeting more Lakeside families, and I’m looking forward to the student interactions,” she says. She and Adam have four children: Madelyn (LL ‘24), Connor (‘26), Alaina (8th grade), and Henry (6th).

Sophia Dorn Sophie is a 2020 MLC grad with a double major in elementary education and secondary chemistry. She was born and raised in Lusaka, Zambia, Africa where her parents were missionaries for over 30 years. She works in the Extended Learning Center and teaches a section of pre-algebra. She is married to Lakeside teacher Eric Dorn.

Audrey Fischer A new full-time finance specialist on staff, Audrey shares. “I am looking forward to working in a Christian environment.” She and her husband, Leo, celebrated their 40th anniversary this summer by renewing their wedding vows with their family.

Denice Burger She’s a familiar face at Lakeside, having served in the Scrip office and substitute front office.

Now she’s a teacher, tutor and mentor in the Extended Learning Center. Denice graduated from Purdue University with a degree in child development. Her three children are all alum. Kyle and Brett Schmidt (‘17) have graduated from college and Ryann (‘20) is a senior at UW-LaCrosse.

Justin Gut Justin teaches chemistry, physics and environmental science.

“Lakeside is a wonderful school and I am excited to see how we can work together to help grow the science department,” he says. Justin and wife, Cindy, have three children, Alex, Liam, and Bryce. With a masters in instructional technology from MLC, he’s also stepped into all things audio/visual on campus and coached JV boys soccer this fall.

Austin DeNoyer Austin teaches Strength & Conditioning, Fit for Life, and Freshman Boys PhyEd this year.

A ‘16 alum himself, he says “What I’m most excited about at Lakeside is being able to share my passion for fitness and athletics with the students.” He coached

Josh Hoehnke Since fall 2020, Josh has been a band director for several area Lutheran grade schools; this year he was hired as the first Lakeside-employed elementary band program manager as well. He graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College with a

degree in Wide Range Instrumental Music Education. He lives in Cambridge with his wife, Taylor, and their dog, Mushu.

Craig Sonntag Craig was called to serve a new position in the Math and English departments. “Lakeside has an awesome staff and student body that I have seen in action for 30+ years— and now I am part of that Lakeside tradition of excellence,” he says. He and wife, Cathy, have three daughters, Ashley (’12) (& Brandon) Phillips, Alyssa (‘15) (& Evan) Rabas, and Audra (‘16) is engaged.

They have two grandsons, Christian and Aiden. Craig will is also the girls varsity basketball assistant and the head boys golf coach. He has a M. Ed. with a 3-12 Integrating Technology focus from Walden University.

Two long-timers announce retirement at school year’s end

Pastor Mark Toepel “It has been a tremendous blessing for myself and my family to be part of the Lakeside family for more than forty years,” says Señor. “I pray that God continues to shower His blessings.” He teaches Spanish and Latin.

Paul Bauer Paul calls it a “joy and privilege” to have served Lakeside for 30 years.

“It’s a special institution where the love of Christ permeates the culture, ruling in the hearts and lives of all present. May God continue to bless her!” Mr. Bauer teaches biology & coaches football and boys basketball.

Lakeside Link: 1990 grad serves as he bikes with “Trail Buddies” In July, Fort Wayne, Indiana, CBS affiliate, WANE 15, shared a story about the Trail Buddies program at the Jorgensen Family YMCA, where volunteer bicyclists are paired with individuals unable to pedal on their own.

Forever Warrior Todd Eigenschink (‘90) has pedaled everyone from children to people in their 90s, people who might rarely get outside, let alone take a bike ride. “We are SO blessed to have him as a volunteer!” says Rebekah Coffey, Director of Adaptive Services at the YMCA.

“While Trail Buddies is ostensibly about giving bike rides to people who can’t pedal a bike—and of course it actually does that—a possibly-better part is the relationships it builds with the riders,” Todd shares.

“While some riders are non-verbal, you can usually tell that they’re looking forward to the ride or that they enjoyed the 1990 LLHS yearbook ride. You get to know their parents or caregivers and you build a bond with the family. The hour you spend pedaling the person might be the only break the caregiver gets during that day!”

Trail Buddies isn’t the only way Todd serves his community. In addition to his work as a system administrator at Ferguson Advertising in Fort Wayne, he volunteers with multiple charities and in his church, Beautiful Savior Lutheran n Fort Wayne, plus finds time to participate in triathlons.

He and wife, Darla, have been married for 26 years. “Her older sister named her for the Little Rascals character,” he says. “She’s a classroom aide at a local elementary school by day, an avid crafter at night, and a Jeep Girl all the time. She and my sister Amy (Eigenschink ‘88 Slattery) are cut from similar-but-different pieces of cloth. If we lived near each other the two of them would always be together.” Todd and Darla have a 17-year-old son, Zachary.

He gives so much of his time to encourage others, and when asked about a Lakeside teacher that encouraged him, he shares, “I had several, but since you asked for one . . . that would be Pastor Martin Stuebs. Among other things, he challenged what I thought I knew and believed, and helped me figure out how to be confident in it and articulate it.”

He couldn’t resist giving honorable mentions to other teachers, however, including “Mark Ricke (thinking big), and Ed Schutters and Craig Schwartz (science nerds).”

Cross Country brings home 2023 state title

Congratulations to our Warriors, the D2 State Cross Country Champions!

For the 3rd time in as many years, the 2023 Warrior boys cross country team earned a berth at the WIAA state meet October 28. Runners-up in 2022, these boys combined to take the title: senior Cameron Weiland 5th/152 16:11.7; senior Mark Garcia 20th 16:42.3; senior Gideon Ewerdt 23rd 16:44.3; junior Daniel Ertman 48th 17:12.5; sophomore Grant Schmid 90th 17:45.9.

After a seven-year wait, the 86 -strong Warrior Band returned to the Calgary Stampede July 7. 2023, marching 2.8 miles in front of 300,000 spectators plus an international TV audience. (Parade organizers decided on no judging for bands.) They also marched in three parades on July 4 in the Rushmore area and Bowness July 8, day of “the largest community parade and pancake breakfast in Alberta.” Teens visited Big Sky Country, Banff National Park, and the Columbia Icefields before wrapping with parades in suburban Twin Cities and River Falls, Wis.

1st Children’s Theatre stages Rainbow Fish

Our first-ever Children’s Theatre stage show of Rainbow Fish went swimmingly! (Adapted from the book

Jonathan Abel (‘22) ran a second marathon (Brew City) in April 2023 in 3:37:08, on pace for sub-3 hours around the 18 mile mark, a PR that he’s working to break in the future.

Lukas and Olivia (Andress) Heckmann (both ‘19) celebrated their first wedding anniversary on Aug. 12. They reside in Charleston, S.C.

Matthias Winters (‘18) married Abigail Burg at St. Luke’s, Watertown on August 12. Noah Gartner was best man and 16 other alum joined the picnic. They live in Enterprise, Ala. while he is in flight school at Fort Novosel.

Madelyn Klug (‘19) and Connor Boinski were married May 21. They met and graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College.

He is studying dentistry and she’s pursuing a masters in professional counseling.

Noah Gartner (‘18) married Justyce Ripka in Waldorf, Minn. Oct. 14. Classmates Matthias Winters and Shane Schultz were best man and groomsman. Gartners reside in Luverne, Minn.

Alex Ryan (‘20) and Katie Stuebs (‘20) are planning their wedding for August 2024.

Alex studies finance and plays baseball at Valparaiso. Katie sells real estate at RE/MAX Shine and teaches cycling classes.

Ashley Kohls (‘16) graduated from Concordia UniversityWisconsin in May with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree. She is working in the outpatient orthopedic setting with plans to get involved in pediatrics.

Mikayla Haag (‘15) and Bryce Weiland (‘13) were married on April 15 at Zion, Columbus. Bryce is an industrial mechanic at IFF and Mikayla is a hairstylist. They live in Fall River.

Laurie Lapp (‘92) passed away unexpectedly at her home on October 6. Services were held at Zion Lutheran, Arlington on October 20.

Marissa Otterstatter (‘09) and Troy Essmann were married Sept 3, ‘22. She works as a Paramedic in Pewaukee and on the weekends as a wedding coordinator at her family’s venue, The Hay Loft. They welcomed a yellow lab, Max, to their family.

David (‘90) and Anne Zastrow are celebrating their kids Monique (‘19) and Zachaery (‘23) both being Forever Warriors.

Tracy (Schmidt ‘88) Robinson got engaged to Timothy Flitcraft on July 31.

Lawrence Arndt (‘66) passed away on July 17 at UW Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years and Forever Warrior Jackie (Wegner ‘66), 2 sons, 4 grandsons and one great grandson. Funeral services were held at Trinity, Watertown, on July 24.

Kristen (Priebe ‘86) and Michael Grunewald (‘85) welcomed their first grandchild on January 11, 2023. Theodore Knoelke. He is the son of their oldest daughter, Andrea (Grunewald ‘12) and Daniel Knoelke (‘13) who are also Forever Warriors.

Lakeside Link: recent grads compete in less common D1 athletics Faith Retzlaff ‘22 — Equestrian - Jumping Seat Team at University of Minnesota-Crookston

For Faith, riding lessons at age 9 turned into a college opportunity. Later, she worked at a horse stable in exchange for riding lessons, and now she rides most days at college. At the Novice Level (middle of the pack) to start last year, she earned 36 points during the season to advance to Limit Level for her sophomore year, allowing her to compete both On the Flat and Over Fences for the 23-24 season. UM-Crookston is D2, but competes with D1 colleges such as South Carolina and Baylor in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association. Faith competed in regionals and zone competition as a freshman—one level away from Nationals.

Finding time to study can be a challenge because of travel and three-hour practice sessions. While tutors are available, Faith credits LLHS with preparing her better for college than some of the other students. “College is more challenging, but with my habits of study and time management, that has helped me a lot!” she says.

Finding time to come home is also a challenge because the school is a nine-hour car drive or a 12-hour train ride back to Columbus for Faith, who participated in band, marching band, choir, and was an active member of Teens for Christ during her Lakeside years.

Another difference is talking about her faith. “In my philosophy course, I had people of different religions in my discussions. I used what I learned in Apologetics class in the ‘real’ world.” While riding and competitions took her away from weekly church attendance, Faith gives a hint for staying close to God. “I got a new Bible when I went to college and make it a habit to read from it every day,” she says.

Evelyn Schauer ‘21 — Women’s Rowing Team at University of Wisconsin-Madison Paying for college was a top priority for Evelyn. She wanted to attend a big D1 engineering school because she felt there would be better class options and a career connections. She founds some academic scholarships but also considered athletics. Her best HS sport was track, but her times weren’t fast enough.

Enter rowing. UW has a long history in women’s rowing—national champs in 1975, 15 NCAA appearances, 16 Olympians. Evelyn tried out and made the team, also known for developing walk-ons. She raced in the Novice 8 boat (8 rowers, 1 coxswain) and did well enough to earn a 15% scholarship for room and board. The coach constantly juggles line ups to see which girls match up technically and on boat speed, and Evelyn moved up to the 2Varsity 4s boat (4 rowers). One of Coach Bebe Bryans’ mantras has been, “We have to get a week better every day!” due to the cold climate and a frozen Lake Mendota for five months of the year.

Evelyn loves competing and working six days a week while studying engineering. She credits Lakeside for “feeling I was a step ahead of many other students at UW in academics.” It’s helpful that D1 athletes get first pick of scheduling classes because it helps her classes during the practice hours of 6-8 a.m. and 4-5 p.m.

Training and not having a car on campus makes church attendance difficult. “I watch a lot of Time of Grace,” she notes. “I thought it would be harder to talk about my faith, but there are many students who grew up with similar backgrounds. I’ve found a lot more Christians and Lutherans than I thought I would,” she says, adding that one of her trainers attends Holy Cross, Madison.

Though the team finished 6th in the Big Ten, which means they didn’t qualify for the NCAA tournament, Evelyn is excited to improve in rowing to earn more money, and grow and learn in a culturally diverse student body. page 12 | Lakeside Lutheran Link | 2023 Issue 2 | llhs.org

Lakeside Link: ‘01 grad agrees to lead at Twice is Nice Resale

Good Stewards, Inc., the managing board of the Lakeside-affiliated resale store in Jefferson, Wis., announced the hiring of a full-time store manager this year. When a place sells just shy of a million dollars in a calendar year, needs arise that even our unmatched, faithful volunteer corps cannot effectively manage.

That’s when Forever Warrior Megan Uttech stepped up. Megan manages a team of volunteer day managers along with 100+ other volunteers who work as cashiers, department managers, donation receivers, sorters, stockers & more. After 20 years as a retail manager, she is excited to work at the store that supports her alma mater, as well as her nieces and nephews. (Two nieces and two nephews have graduated [’15, ’17, ’22, ’23], one niece is currently a junior, and two nephews in 7th and 5th grades plan to attend.)

How did Lakeside prepare you?

As a student, I loved the Christian atmosphere and was grateful that my parents made the decision to send me there. Being able to grow and thrive in an environment like that helped me to be able to fearlessly speak about my faith for years after graduation.

What’s your favorite memory of Lakeside?

One of my favorites was of our bus driver, Willie Vick. One year our bus route riders took a collection to buy Willy a Starter Green Bay Packers jacket.

Any teacher especially impact your time at Lakeside?

Pastor Stuebs and his senior religion class—he called it “Senior Relations”—since it was more of a way to learn to relate the class to everyday life. It has been great to see so many retired LLHS teachers volunteering their time at TiN now!

What’s great about being the Twice is Nice store manager?

Many things! To come to work each day knowing that first and foremost, the mission is to support Christian education. Secondly, to see how we can make a positive impact within the community by selling donated items at a low cost and by being sustainable by recycling donated clothing that is not fit for sale in our store. Another is to see the fellowship between the volunteers and their dedication to our mission. Some volunteers come once or twice a month, and there are others there almost every day of the week!

I’ve been blessed to work closely with some of the original Day Managers who have been here since day one in 1993 (or soon after), and I have loved hearing the history of how Twice is Nice came to be. I am thrilled to be able to take my years of retail leadership experience to help take this store and organization into the future!

40: The reunion was July 29 at Milford Hills with 41 classmates and 19 guests. 23 toured LLHS before dinner, 50/50 raffle, and trivia. Over 40 donated prizes were given in a wide range of categories including trivia.

Alum donated $1,095 to Lakeside from the class of ‘83 in memory of their 6 deceased classmates: Noel Boettcher-Provensano, Dan Zoellick, Dena Frentzel, Todd Gimmel, Phil Zoellick and David Joseph. Thank you to Glenn Lassanske and team for all of their hard work in organizing.
