Debt-free: What does this mean?

A message on Lakeside’s past, present and future from Kirk DeNoyer, Executive Director Twenty years ago, Lakeside began the most significant building project since the school was built in 1961. The addition included the entire east end (i.e., atrium, gymnasium, courtyard, band and choir classrooms, a science wing, weight room and additional locker rooms). This final cost came in at over $8M with a 30-year bank mortgage of more than $4.5M. For 20 years, we’ve been making significant monthly payments on this mortgage.

In January 2021, the mortgage was paid in full.

Lakeside is debt-free! How did this happen with 10 years to go on the original loan?

Thanks be to God, who provides this ministry with a federation of churches who offer significant financial support. Thanks be to God, who provides many generous individual donors. Finally, thanks be to God, who provides leaders who have practiced good stewardship and financial discipline with the gifts given.

Now what? About a year ago, leadership began formulating a strategic plan that included the anticipation of the debt retirement. First priority was to change our budgeted and donor gifts funds: the “building debt” became the “building improvement” fund. Our goal is to update our current facility to make it more efficient without any new long-term debt.

This new building improvement plan includes summer 2021 projects: updates to building mechanicals for energy savings library renovation that will connect a large study hall/meeting room to the current library repair/update east boys’ locker room

Then, we are in the information-gathering stage of significant projects that include: remodel of the West Gym featuring retractable auditorium-style seating for 600 (when extended to the middle of the main court), that will provide an enhanced worship atmosphere for our daily chapel services and other events expansion and update of our cafeteria and main entryway.

LL Drama Club presents “The Nerd” (cover)

The Nerd, a comedy by Larry Shue, had its first staged reading at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater in the 1979/80 season.

In April 1981, its World Premiere was at the PAC’s Todd Wehr Theater. The Nerd was the top-grossing American play in London’s West End in 1986 and ran on Broadway for 441 performances from 1987-88, starring Mark Hamill and directed

by Charles Nelson Reilly.

Our own Warrior actors performed it on April 23–25 under the direction of ‘06 alum, Kristina (Wortman) Meinel.

Lakeside Link: ‘06 alum returns for some high school drama

“The magic of theatre” has been with 2006 grad Kristina (Wortman) Meinel for a long time. From her own high school performances, through her college Fine Arts degree, to today—whether it be directing or with her behind-the-scenes artistry—Kristina has found ways to serve her Savior & others in the most entertaining ways.

A 1969 graduate, Phyllis (Heiliger) Huska came back to LLHS in 1992—the year her eldest was a junior— and developed our library into an all-day helpful and comfortable resource for students and staff alike. After 29 years, she’s closing the book on her Warrior career, but she agreed to one last report—on her own history—before checking out.

LL: What was your beginning like?

PH: [Prior to fall ‘92], the library was open one period a day because Linda Seeklander had one free period.

Principal Nelson wanted more and put out a plea to the Federation for anyone interested in helping. Our family had just moved to Lake Mills from the west side of Madison (we had two students at LL, Our Redeemer wasn’t federated yet and busing was only from Eastside and Holy Cross). So I answered the plea, organizing the library on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Only about half the books were cataloged on a simple library software program. There were stacks of donated books filling the storage rooms. I gradually weeded out the books that weren’t appropriate or useful and got the rest on the computer.

LL: How else has the library changed over the years?

PH: The most significant was in 2003; when science and music rooms and the East gym were added, the library also expanded, more than doubling and allowing access to the new courtyard.

When I started, there was one computer in the library, and that was for the librarian.

Several years later, we had two computers for student research or word processing use. After the ‘03 addition, it jumped to 12 student computers. Now all students have Chromebooks under our 1:1 initiative.

Years ago, students used free time in study halls to look at magazines, read newspapers, browse books like the Guinness Book of World Records or read a book. Now? If students have free time, they’re watching YouTube videos, Netflix, or playing online games.

LL: You were an onstage Warrior?

The Lakeside stage holds many memories for me, and it is an honor to return to see others grow in their love for performance.

In 2005, I played Marston in And Then There Were None, as well as Frau Schmidt in Sound of Music in 2006. My favorite role was Lily from Annie in 2004. I made so many memories with friends from different high school groups ... trailing feathers wherever I went with that molting feather boa ... hearing Annie (Katie [Rhodes ‘05] Lesperance) do justice to the beautiful song “Maybe” ... learning choreography from Linnea Koeppel ‘06 for “Easy Street,” my trio (Kristina, below left) with Josh Schultz ‘04 and Melissa Gallun ‘06.

LL: Describe some of your favorite times in the library.

PH: My favorite day of the school year was Valentine’s Day (or a school day close to it) when I ran Library Speed Dating for Freshman English. Mrs. Schommer would tease them ahead of time—making them think we were really going to set them up with a human date—so some of them would be really nervous when they arrived. Some may have been disappointed to find out that their dates were books, but everyone seemed to have a good time. Not being able to do that this year was sad.

Mr. Doering has used the library for his end-of-the-semester Government mock trials so they have a more courtroom-like setting. I always enjoy seeing students take on their roles of witnesses, lawyers and jurists. Over the years, some students really were memorable for how deeply they got into their characters.

One student has always stood out as a success story: adamant that they hated reading and proud they had made it to senior year without really reading a book, they were assigned a report and had to find a book. I recommended one, and when returning it, the student thanked me, saying that they didn’t know there could be interesting stories, but they had read the whole book and really enjoyed it— might even want to read another book!

It’s a special opportunity to come together for a show, an event that can never be duplicated in the exact way after those people are done with that show. What a great thing to be part of AND to pass on to other generations of thespians now.

LL: Tell us about family & plans.

Sarah (‘94) is a CPA and husband, Eric, is a pilot. Peter (‘96) is an engineer and wife, Kathryn, a speech therapist; they have two boys. Meghan (‘99) is a graphic designer and husband, Paul, a pastor, with two boys and a girl. As for retirement plans, if the pandemic ever ends, Jim and I will travel.

After all, we have five grandchildren.

LL: Tell us more about what’s special about passing it on.

The best part of directing teens is watching them throughout the process, from auditions to final curtain call.

They learn so much about performing and themselves. I hope to share an appreciation for theatre in general, but mostly I want to get each kid to reach a higher level of performance than they thought they could. I want them to learn to be expressive and learn timing and posture and presentation, but mostly, I hope they learn to use their experiences and personality to serve God with a different set of talents than in math class.

I hope to teach them to embrace who they are (quirks and all) and gain confidence in their uniqueness because, just as each has a unique role in a theatre performance, each person has unique qualities that can further God’s work. We work hard, we have A LOT of fun, and we make some pretty cool art for God’s glory.

This past spring was very different. We had lost last year’s performance of High School Musical [which would have been Kristina’s Lakeside directing debut–ed.]. In auditions and our first rehearsals in 2021, the teens were somber ... stiff. It was a challenge to breathe life back into the process, a lot of going through the motions until we felt “better,” like shaking free from the losses of the last year. The final month, we finally felt the creativity bursting out; it may sound lame, but the happiness finally seemed to return to the stage.

I began stage managing professionally at the Janesville Armory. For three years, I directed at Lake Country Lutheran High School.

I also work at Salty Earth Pictures in Fort. Steve Zambo saw me in 2005 and asked me to audition. I became an intern during college, building and painting sets, giving tours, cleaning, and being cast and crew on films. Fast forward—working at Salty Earth remains a joyful blessing. We all cover a multitude of jobs there, but my official title is Key Hair and Makeup Artist, working on our Bible Stories project, Movie Critters (with puppets!) and our latest feature films, The Open Door and The Author, The Star and The Keeper. I also work independently as a makeup artist for other film projects, most notedly for Highlights Media.

LL : Final thoughts?

I love to share the magic of theatre and help build self-confidence. Theatre embraces every type—just find the right “role”—lead acting, a character actor, dancing, costuming, stage managing, muscling as set crew, using brains to wire a light system, tuning an ear to minute sound differences, publicity, painting and more. I hope to help equip them for their future, wherever it may lead!

LL: What else keeps you busy?

This year’s seniors were speed dating books as freshmen with Mrs. Huska in 2018.

Lakeside is first to host Cornerstone high school resilience workshops

Competitive Team updates

Student leaders from our chapter of National Honor Society were excited to be on the leading edge of what’s now recognized statewide as a critical issue for students and school staff who have dealt with unpredictable and fluid learning environments. In January, the Wisconsin DPI introduced a “Wisconsin School Mental Health Framework” that seeks to address needs in schools.

The six modules in the Cornerstone curriculum address resilience, crisis survival, reality acceptance, mindfulness, emotion control, and thought distortion.

On six days from November–February, after an intro all-school assembly at the start of each session day, three counselors met with students in a designated class.

These smaller group interactions allowed presenters to equip teens with specific tools and strategies to develop resilience and decrease stress and anxiety.

“We are the first high school in the nation to partner with Cornerstone, which is a neat distinction,” says senior Lydia Buxa, NHS president. “With our successful experience, we look to encourage other schools to participate because it really made a difference for a lot of us who sometimes struggle with these issues.”

»» Wrestlers Riley Schmidt, Dane McIlvain and freshman Sam Schmidt (all from Janesville!) earned sectional berths, under new head coach Clayton Grow.

Last fall, Lakeside had already been searching but couldn’t find a program for high school students, so we reached out to Milwaukee-based Christian Family Solutions (CFS). Licensed counselor Karen Fischer there had created the Cornerstone Resilience System, a curriculum for churches, and was more than happy to customize it for teens.

“There is an anxiety epidemic among those under age 25, and they need to learn to manage this better,” Fischer says.

Since 2003, thousands of Warriors have come through our East Gym locker rooms. After 18 years of post-game celebrations, strength class showers and more than 50 seasons of varsity sports, the boys’ locker room needs some serious rehab. The completed project involves a conversion into a varsity team locker room and other aspects, but the most pressing need is to replace nearly 100 worn out, non-locking lockers. This project will directly improve PhyEd and athletic experiences for thousands more Warriors to come.

»» The 15-member Academic Bowl team took 4th in the virtual Conference competition in November, under the advising of Mrs. Jodie Schommer.

»» Boys basketball (19-4) took the conference title. Soph Levi Birkholz broke the school single-game scoring record (43). Coach Todd Jahns marked his 300th career win. Five Warriors were named to all conference teams and Birkholz to all-state.

»» The Warrior Dance team was named regional champ in both D3 jazz & kick and earned a trip to state. They are coached by Audra (Tuescher ‘17) Jensen.

When the above photo posted on Facebook, an alum reminded us of the irony in saying that hosting a dance on campus was “a return to tradition.” After all, dances have only been on campus since 1992! Thirty years allows us to keep the wording: In an effort to return to a tradition [of spring formal events] started in the early 60s, juniors and seniors enjoyed a modified version of “May Banquet” on campus May 1. Members of the senior “royalty” court included (pictured L-R): Olivia Krieser, Stoughton; Isaiah Andress, Ixonia (son of Greta [Stuebs ‘95] Andress); Stephanie Schafer, Lake Mills; Devin Splinter, Ixonia; Evelyn Schauer, Watertown; Darren Schuster, Juneau; Grace Seim, Beaver Dam; Graham Hatcher, Oconomowoc; Caitlin Heinrich, Madison; and Benjamin Neumann, Oconomowoc (son of Rebecca [Zastrow ‘95] Neumann).

With the financial burden of the mortgage gone, Lakeside has stabilized the tuition rate for the coming school year with the smallest increase in over a decade. On top of that, plans are underway to update our current facilities to make them more efficient and/or enhance the functionality. Projects were determined based on faculty and staff ideas for facility improvement. The first projects will take place this summer with the Library / Study hall renovation as well as a repair and update to the east boys locker room. All plans being considered will be accomplished without incurring debt. (see message from Exective Director Kirk DeNoyer, p. 2)

»» Virtual Capitol Conference forensics tournament: Warrior 4N6 were champions (for the 11th year in a row, in case you’re counting) under coach Steve Lauber.

»» Girls basketball, under Coach Andy Asmus’ (‘88), in his first year taking over the head varsity role, ended the season 9-11. Three players were named to all-conference.

»» Lakeside Bowling Club senior Connor Slattery (son of Amy [Eigenschink ‘88] Slattery) qualified for the Bowling Centers Association of Wisconsinsponsored (BCAW) High School Bowling Club State Championships, a first for the two year-old club. »» A young Warrior robotics team qualified for a trip to state and earned a respectable 17th place among much more experienced teams. »» Spring sports are in full swing. Laura (Meinel ‘00) Montez accepted a call to serve as principal at Divine Savior Academy, Delray Beach, Fla. Her husband, Marc, will be the middle school physical education teacher at DSA.

In spring 2020’s shut down, Lara (Krug ‘95) Johansson began walking, using the elliptical & bike rides. She set a goal for 2,020 selfpowered miles in 2020— & reached it Dec. 22.

Rick Holz (‘90) & Claire Haslow were married Oct. 10, 2020. Rick teaches at St. Stephen, Beaver Dam, and Claire is the office manager at Innovative Technologies.

Daniel Kleinhans (‘80) retired in July from Enbridge Energy after 30 years. He spent three years in Fort Atkinson, five in Griffith, Indiana, and 22 in Wisconsin Rapids. He lives in Nekoosa, Wis. Dale Grandt (‘72) lost his battle to pancreatic cancer and was welcomed home on Feb. 8.

Debbra (Schmidt ‘69) Paul passed away on Jan. 15.

Funeral services were at Bethany, Fort Jan. 23.

David Burrow (‘66) entered eternal glory on Feb. 8.

Joann “Josie” Piper (‘64) left for heaven Nov. 16, 2020. Her memorial service was Dec. 5 at St. Mark, Watertown.

Wayne Schliewe, a LLHS bus driver from 7 years, passed away Dec. 5, 2020. Wayne drove the Juneau route which he believed had the “best kids.”

Rev. Lloyd Huebner (12/8/20) & wife, Inez, (12/9/20) met Jesus within hours of each other. Pastor Huebner served as Lakeside’s first principal and taught from 1958-1967.

Philip Strohm gained his crown of life on Jan. 22. Phil began his service as an instructor at LLHS in 1961 & then served as principal from 1970-90.

Event Update: Grand Event celebrates Forever Warriors make Grand Event even Grand-er

The 10th annual Lakeside Lutheran Grand Event headed to The Hay Loft in Watertown for a Denim & Diamonds-themed celebration. Hundreds of generous donors and faithful volunteers made the day a success that met and even exceeded organizers’ hopes.

Online bidders and donors joined in from afar while more than 200 gathered in person in an open house-style afternoon, complete with food trucks and more than a dozen stations and features that complemented the long-awaited fellowship opportunities.

Forever Warriors were well represented, as 17 alum volunteered time and effort in

planning and hosting the day; 26 alum donated auction items. Two classes—class of 1967 & class of 2018—donated to fill baskets of goodies for auction, and dozens more alum joined in the fun by bidding and donating.

Over $95,000 (net) was raised! Each year, proceeds are divided among three funds: general operating, financial aid,

and building improvement (used to be building debt but not any more! See message, p. 2). In addition, several student-led projects were able to be supported, many in full, including an augmented-reality sandbox for STEM and other classroom use, TechEd machine tools, videography headphones and Consumer Science kitchen enhancements, a new “Warrior Bob” mascot costume, the locker room rehab project (see p. 7) and Operation GO mission trips.

Lakeside Link: Alum Chris Johnson keeps Lakeside in the Loop Christopher Johnson (‘93) earned a degree in Mass Communications and Computer Information Science.

From 2000-2013 he served at Bethany Lutheran College as studio director and faculty member and helped start the Television and Film program. During this time, he earned a Masters in Media Studies from The New School in New York. Chris worked at WSAW-TV, Wausau, as operations manager, helped launch WZAW-TV, a FOX network affiliate; and is now an engineer at WDJT-TV, CBS 58, Milwaukee, coordinating live news reports, installing equipment and maintaining reporter IT gear.

On his years at Lakeside

I ran cross country for two years, but running wasn’t my strength. Coach Walta asked me to be the manager and videographer. I think I ran more videotaping the team than I did in races.

I put together highlight videos, which built my passion for video production.

Coach Jim Unke asked me to produce a video of the basketball team. They won the Lutheran Invitational Tournament, and I made a highlight video, “Three Point Magic,” which Coach played at the awards banquet. That led to paid projects, starting my path to video production as a career.

There is no doubt God used Lakeside teachers to lead me down the path God intended for my life, even though when I attended Lakeside there were no video production classes or a video lab.

On the Lakeside Loop

Since leaving Bethany, I have missed mentoring students. I was humbled when Mr. Hackbath reached out to me.

Brock Schneider and Jacob Greidl are talented and hard-working students. I help them determine what is newsworthy, record their anchor pieces, and write in a conversational style. I’ve been impressed with how they have become comfortable in delivering the news in such a short time. For two students to have consistently produced a weekly news program for 10 weeks is impressive. Too often students want to produce “late night comedy” news.

Brock and Jacob have been consistent in telling Lakeside’s stories professionally.

On Christians and the media

We are in an age where the media isn’t trusted. The best way we can contribute is to develop Christian journalists who seek to tell the story, not interject opinion.

Journalists who look for positive stories that make people feel good about their community. God blessed us with the technology of audio/video production and I know he wants us to use it to tell stories about his blessings. Students can also use these skills to create media content for their church, using the God-given gifts of technology in sharing the love of Jesus.

Opportunity: Mentoring is a gift to the future Perhaps more than ever—with rising college debt and an everchanging world—our teens could use the wisdom of experienced adults to help transition them into life after high school.

Lakeside’s development office is pursuing more mentoring relationships for our Lakeside teens—actively working adults or recent retirees who have some time and the knowledge to share with our teens in a small group or career fair setting.

Maybe it’s something in technical education like Chris Johnson (story, facing page) or in the traditonal skilled trades; perhaps it’s in business or entrepreneurship. You might have expertise in an industry that instictively interests teens, like graphic arts, music, sports management or marketing. Could your knowledge and experience could help them decide which type of engineering or health career to pursue Respond to in college? Are you in a lesser-understood field that could use some attention? Perhaps your our survey by experience in ministry could help a future teacher or pastor feel confident about that leap of faith.

We would appreciate hearing interest from our Forever Warriors as we seek to educate, encourage and equip our current Warriors for life and for eternity. We have a quick survey designed to gauge our alum interest in this effort. Thank you for your prayerful consideration!

On working with LLHS students

Lakeside students are hardworking, dedicated, and multi-talented.

I’ve felt a genuine respect from the students. The students want to learn and that passion is fueled by teachers. Mr. Hackbarth provides support and holds the students to a high standard. The quality of the students’ work is a direct reflection of his commitment to excellence.

When Ted Klug (‘92) was a teacher here, he pushed to get a videography course.

Chris came to Lake Mills for a week and gave me a crash course. He not only provided great amounts of knowledge to set up the curriculum, but he also found ways to expand the meager amounts of equipment we had.

That brings us to the Lakeside Loop.

Because Chris is free Monday through Wednesday, he offered to help—an offer I couldn’t refuse. With his expertise, and Isaiah Minning joining the two other young men, Lakeside Loop was born.

Chris is a great example of alum moved by God to help Christian education.

After a great deal of careful thought and consideration, the decision was made to again cancel the LLHS “50+1” class reunion, scheduled for this July at the Green Lake Conference Center. There is hope to be able to eventually plan and succeed in hosting a reunion at some point in the not-too-distant future, no matter what the “number of years.” We’re hoping classmates will appreciate not having to make the decision to attend or not and will look forward to having our reunion when we can enjoy the party together.
