Greetings, Forever Warriors!

We hope this edition of Link finds you safe and well.

This school year brought many changes to Lakeside as we adapted to health department guidelines, yet it is still nice to have our students here on campus. We daily work to keep our doors open so students continue to learn and thrive, even when sometimes we have to adjust those plans. I am certain you can relate as you work from home, become educators yourself with children learning from home, attend college via Zoom, or alter your normal work habits.

During times like these our faith and trust can be challenged, and it can be difficult to maintain relationships with the people who shared God’s Word with you while attending Lakeside. In this hustle and bustle, we often think of you and pray for you, our Forever Warriors, “that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17-19).

We pray that through this issue of Link we have created an opportunity for you to stay in touch with your Lakeside years and that you enjoy hearing updates from those who walked the halls with you. We hope your memories serve as a solid foundation as we live our faith and bring hope to the hurting world around us, wherever we are scattered throughout the world. (Check out some of our “scattered” Warriors on p. 12–13.)

Always remember that life as a Lakeside Warrior does not end when you graduate.

It continues, grows, and thrives.

May the Lord continue to guide and protect each of you.

As the story on p. 7 shares, we couldn’t welcome as many alum to homecoming this year, so as is the case with so many other 2020 events, we needed to think outside the “box” of campus and into the virtual world. Our development office extended an invite on social media for alum to let us “see you in Warrior wear.” Close to 35 alum sent selfies sporting fave Ts or hoodies or hats...even a couple quilts! We shared them on Instagram and Facebook throughout the day, Oct. 2. Three lucky winners were awarded $25 giftcards. Stay in touch with us—we love it!

Grandparents are Grand!

For 15 years,

grandparents have been invited to campus for breakfast, chapel, and classes on “Grandparents Day.” What a great way to connect grandparents to where their favorite teens spend hours and hours each day.

This year was different—of course—but oh so sweet. We invited the grands to instead send cards and photos. Students picked up from the “Mail Station” and were given a magnet to help display those cherished photos in lockers. Thanks to over 200 sets of grandparents, 199 students received cards, photos, and gifts.

Message to LLHS from one set of grandparents: “Thank you for letting us connect with our grandson Archer. It meant a lot to be included in this especially since with COVID we have not been able to see Archer.

Archer loves Lakeside and having him get a Christian education is important to us.”

Faculty Feature: Faces have never meant more You’re certainly aware that many schools are not having face-to-face instruction this school year, but your LLHS is thrilled to have been in-person for 42 of the 48 instructional days through the end of October. Both staff and students are working hard to keep us on campus this entire school year!

New face in FACS

STEM Academy sets its sight in the stars

Kristi Bredendick joined the Lakeside family in 2020 as our Family and Consumer Science (FACS) teacher. She also teaches a section of the required sophomore Health class.

Two Warrior faculty members completed intensive Project Lead The Way™ training in preparation for two courses added to the STEM Academy curriculum this year.

Kristi spent 35 years teaching at Lutheran elementary schools in California. In 2019, she and husband, Dan, moved to Wisconsin when he accepted a call to be principal at St. Paul, Fort Atkinson. She taught 3-4 grade at Holy Cross, Madison, for one year.

Kristi and Dan have two daughters and two grandchildren. It’s not the climate of warm and sunny California, so give her an extra warm and sunny Wisconsin welcome when you see her!

In case you run into them...

We had some new cross country coaches assisting head coach Cameron Ausen this fall. Elizabeth Zank is a nurse at the Aurora Medical Center in Summit. She ran CC at Dodgeland High School in Juneau and during her years at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Two of her sisters are Warriors—Laura is in the class of 2021 and Alyssa is a 2018 grad.

Tim Matthies is not a new face, but he is a new cross country coach. After stepping aside as the girls varsity basketball head coach last year, he stepped up to bike alongside runners at each practice this fall. Read about the great news about our cross country runners on page 5. >

Jodie Schommer has joined the STEM Academy team after completing her training to teach Engineering Essentials, the new first-year Academy course that explores the work of engineers and their role in the design and development of solutions to real-world problems.

EES students are challenged with designing a container to deliver disaster survival materials. Who can successfully deliver it most cost-effectively? Above, they test the “fill” that gives strength to a 3D printed part—how much structural material is needed between the walls of the part to do the job without over-engineering the strength and inflating project cost.

Phil Dretske missed an opportunity to study in San Diego this summer in preparation for facilitating the Aerospace Engineering course, but PTLW™ offered rigorous online training due to COVID restrictions. In AE, students are provided extensive hands-on experiences to grasp fundamentals of flight and propose solutions to exploration and robotics challenges.

Below, students in AE learned physics of flight and aerodynamics through a hands-on glider project.

Will they be blown away when they get to finish the semester working with a new desktop wind tunnel that monitors lift and drag at up to 80 MPH to test aerodynamic efficiency and stability?

School Update: News from inside the temporary “new normal”

Alum continue to tell us they appreciate updates on what’s happening at your LLHS. The Federation Connection e-newsletter, archived at issuu.com/llhs, shares student and school blessings on a monthly basis, but here are several especially noteworthy stories from this most unusual and challenging year.

Blessed to be face-to-face

Your LLHS commenced its 63rd school year on August 18 with 426 students enrolled for 100% in-person instruction.

Well into November, we have maintained in-person for all but a week taken off for preventive measures in October.

came when a Facebook group for the LL Class of 1989 picked up on a social post involving a reply letter from Agnes Froemming, Lakeside’s librarian for almost 30 years when she retired in 1989. Grads from that year surprised her on her 102nd birthday Nov. 6 with cards and flowers.

Shepherds see lambs at LLHS

Warrior Times Weekly recognized

We decided to continue hosting Pastors Days on campus and had our first in early September; it’s a quarterly tradition that brings students’ home church reps in for half-hour small group meetings (and for many, usually involves donuts and other goodies). 85% of our students—from 28 WELS and two ELS congregations—met with their pastors and staff ministers. All went well with social distancing and single-serve treats. Most importantly, our teens did something they had not done at Lakeside for nearly six months: meet in a casual setting with their shepherds.

Teens for Christ start ripple of love

Teens for Christ held its first meeting with over 100 students throughout the gym to discuss what the service group could do under current restrictions. Projects have already included a baby supply drive that was delivered to a “drive-thru baby shower” hosted by the Alpha Resource Center in Watertown, as well as letters written by teens during homeroom time that are sent to shut-ins within our federation congregations.

Adviser Jodie Schommer reports that our student-managed 2019-2020 Warrior Times Weekly was recognized by the American Scholastic Association with a First Place with Special Merit award in the 2020 newspaper competition. Lakeside was one of 12 schools in the U.S. honored with the special merit distinction. Your LLHS student newspaper has kept its weekly production even as many high schools—large and small, across the country—struggle to maintain even a monthly edition schedule.

Sports Report: buckle up!

As you’re likely aware, the entire spring WIAA sports season was canceled (along with in-person classes) after spring break.

Then, WIAA and HS athletic departments across the state spent countless hours discussing 2020–21 sports; many schools ultimately decided to forego fall to wait for a “fourth” season WIAA squeezed between shortened winter and spring seasons.Your LLHS is happy to share that all our teams—cross country, football, girls golf, boys soccer, volleyball—played this fall. Our Capitol Conference had no official events, so A.D. Jahns refilled each team’s entire schedule independently, and all-conference awards will not happen.

Yet what a season it’s been!

Generosity enables progress

Football was 5-0 at press time and punctuated its season with a double OT 24–21 win in the annual Slider Bowl on the night Lake Mills HS dedicated its new turf field/stadium. Post-season play involves 2 rounds of playoffs Nov. 13 & 20.

• LL dad Greg Gnabasik, using an employee referral at Spacesaver Corp. in Fort, started a ball rolling toward a $10,000 grant from the Theodore W. Batterman Foundation, which helped add two new STEM Academy courses (see p. 4) by easing the significant expense of teacher training, aeronautic classroom supply kits and Project Lead the Way™ curriculum expenses.

Girls Golf: their 1st meet Aug. 20 marked 161 days since any area teams had played in high school competition. (Your Warriors took 1st v. Watertown.) By the end, the TEAM qualified for state, making school history. Sr. Maya Heckmann was the sectional medalist and placed 6th individually at state. The team placed 6th.

• Tech Ed was gifted a lathe for our machining area from Bob Reiff of Reiff Preheat Systems, allowing our students to go deeper in their explorations of this metal technology.

• As he gave us an incentive check from the Lake Mills Light & Water Efficiency Improvement program, WPPI Energy rep Greg Hoffmann shared that by swapping fluorescent for LED lights school-wide as we did last March, the $25,701 cost to implement will save the school over $30,000 annually, paying for itself in less than a year. After six months, we’re on track to exceed that estimate.

Boys Soccer: when the season starts weeks late but the schedule is full, that means our kickers were often playing 3, even 4 days a week. All that pressure paid off when they won the regional championship. Final standings 7-6-1 Volleyball: Invited to join the Badger Conference for one year, our girls also took regional and sectional championships and for the third time in five years, made it to state competition, held at Kaukauna High School for WIAA D2 this fall on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Alum Update: Coron says @LLHSForeverWarriors

Shelly (Bruni ‘04) Coron has

joined the Lakeside faculty as an Extended Learning Center (ELC) teacher.

Shelly has coached Warrior JV volleyball for the past 10 years and says it’s nice to now work full-time at her alma mater. “I have so many great memories of being at Lakeside. I was involved in sports, choir, and band,” she says. “From being on the initial courtyard building crew to seeing the Twin Towers during a band trip, the memories remain steadfast in my mind and I will always appreciate the opportunities I was given.”

With a B.A. in Fitness Studies, Shelly wasn’t necessarily planning to work in education; however, when a friend who worked at Genesee Lake School, Oconomowoc, recruited her to be an instructional aide in the classroom, she was up to the challenge, found a perfect fit and worked there for 10 years. She earned a masters in Special Ed and became a

teacher, working with students who were diagnosed with emotional and behavioral disabilities and faced challenges well beyond the resources that mainstream school districts could provide.

This resumé allows her to bring a unique perspective to the Lakeside ELC. “I have seen the drastic side of working with behavioral and academic challenges along with the hardships those students have faced along the way,” Shelly says. “I can help support students who may face some of those same challenges, but in a setting based around our LORD.” That’s the part she loves best about returning to Lakeside. “It is wonderful to be around Christians on a daily basis where I can share my faith without restrictions,” she shares. Plus, it helps the students. “I’ve been through most of the classes here and experiences at Lakeside from my years here where I can relate to the current students.”

One part is different, however. “It feels odd to know that some of the current teachers have taught me previously. I can technically address them by their first name; however, sometimes find myself addressing them as Mr. or Mrs.,” she shares. “Old habits die hard, right?”

Shelly and her husband, Steve, live in Watertown with her stepdaughter Olivia.

They are members at St. John, Juneau, her childhood church, where she’s in the choir.

With a strong passion for volleyball, Shelly also is the co-director and coach at River City Volleyball Club in Watertown. “I can actively work with youth and show my faith on a weekly basis,” she says. She also plays in adult leagues and tournaments.

“While volleyball takes up a large amount of my time in many aspects, I still find time to spend with my family whether it’s road trips, hunting, cookouts, or even selling our lab puppies,” she says. “Life may be busy, but I make the most of it!”

ABCs of the ELC About 25% of freshmen and 11% of all students use the ELC for daily support.

Help begins freshman year even before classes begin as students learn to develop a system that will make high school run smoothly. ELC staff help them organize their lockers, manage each subject’s papers, and monitor assignments with their planner.

The bulk of their work is with students who are assigned to the ELC for study hall. Staff are available to help in almost all core subject areas, but find that support for math and sciences is the area most often needed. The ELC is also available for students who need help and guidance to get back on track in one specific course.

Small but smiling crowd 2020 being what it is, our Alum Zone was capped at a much smaller crowd than we would normally have entertained, but those who who signed up in time had fun nonetheless. It is ALWAYS good to catch up with fellow Forever Warriors.

Dyllan (‘10) and Lizz Jensen were blessed with their third child, Maddox, on April 6, 2020. He joins older sisters Reese and Charlotte “Charlee.” Dyllan is principal/ preschool director/ 6-8 grade teacher at Mt. Olive, Delano, Minn. Lizz is the lead preschool teacher.

Kyle Fax (‘08), who teaches at Divine Savior Academy, Doral, Fla., gave this year’s commencement speech, filmed and broadcast for the families who gathered for a drive-in graduation service.

April (Piepenbrink ‘05) and Tyler Iverson eloped December 14, 2019 in Estes Park, Colo. They moved to Sarasota, Fla., in March 2020 with her son.

Brett and Erin (Steindorf) Duwe (both ‘01) welcomed Lydia Ruth in June. She joins big bros Oliver and Nolan.

Thomas Beyer (‘66), of Middleton, Wis., passed away unexpectedly May 25. He worked for the Department of Revenue for 37 years and served the Wisconsin Army National Guard for 23.

After 20 years on the west coast, James Medick (‘68) retired as the VP and CIO of T-Mobile in Seattle.

He and his wife live in Fond du Lac, Wis. Your Warrior fam wishes you many years of enjoyment back in Sconny!

Despite the pandemic, Heather Hellwig (‘96) and Jonathan Rovey married at Risen Savior, McFarland, on July 11 with a small group of family & friends.

Challenges included getting an exception from the military that allowed her to travel and changing the reception venue 10 days before.

James Lemke (‘79) and his wife, Nedra, both entered the throne room of God on June 16. Their joint funeral was held June 26 at Faith Community Church.

A Forever Warrior entrepreneur hires current Warriors Charlie’s Food Concessions, a family business serving local, county and state fairs across the country, has for years hired Lakeside students to assist during fair season—ever since Doug and Monica MIller’s children developed friendships with other Warrior families.

Darlene Maasz (‘70) passed away Sept. 20. She owned Maasz’s North Shore Inn. Funeral services were held on Sept. 25 in Fort Atkinson.

Now, eldest child and Forever Warrior Charlie Miller ‘19 (pictured second from right above), has made it the 6th generation of family concessionaires, as he not only works in, but also runs his own Fry Stand. This year Charlie’s hired 14 current Warriors to work at the Wisconsin State Fair Drive-Thru. “Out of 14 Lakeside students, they represented nine different towns!”

Fun Fact: Millers made lemonade from lemons at our home football games this fall when they brought in their stand for corn dogs, fries and other fair food after our concessions couldn’t serve hot food due to COVID rules (inset above shows the Millers’ stand behind the home bleachers).

Event Update: Warrior

Golf Outing Success!

In a year like no other in the 26 years of Warrior golf outings, 2020 brought Lakeside supporters out in force for a great day of golf, food and fellowship.

Thanks to the 138 golfers and more than 180 guests for dinner and raffles, this year’s Warrior Club Golf Outing raised almost $15,000. Over 50 volunteers and generous sponsors helped make the event so successful.

This Warrior Club (formerly Boosters, see below) fundraiser happens once a year in July to benefit ALL Warrior sports teams, replacing uniforms, sports equipment, and more. This summer also saw a new venue at Kestrel Ridge in Columbus. Special thanks to all our alum—new or returning—who made for a fun day of golf, laughs, and memories.

Warriors score big This summer we installed a gorgeous new $15,000 scoreboard on the outdoor field in time for fall football and soccer (our old faithful board was unrepairable). Many private donors and businesses, many alum and parents, made it possible. More thanks goes to our own buildings and grounds team who saved your LLHS almost $7,000 in installation costs by doing it in-house. Dustin and Lisa (Scott) Hafenstein (‘15) Silverthorne, Colorado

Lisa shares: “Dustin and I both graduated in 2015. I went to cosmetology school and Dustin to MATC for auto mechanics.

We visited Colorado on our honeymoon last summer and fell in love! We spent the next year getting our house ready to sell. We moved to Silverthorne for a new experience in life.

Did any teacher stand out to you?

One teacher that will always be an inspiration to me is Mrs. Tetzlaff. She always encouraged everyone to be their true authentic selves. Her art room will always have that welcoming feel!

Molly (Graumann ‘10) Phelps Kenai, Alaska

After graduating from MLC in 2014, I served many schools, but right now I am serving as kindergarten teacher at Grace, Kenai, Alaska. My husband serves as pastor there. We love our Alaskan adventure so far.

Which teacher motivated you?

Pastor Clark Schultz definitely stands out.

He was the first to suggest I attend MLC.

far away but close at heart I remember one time he just placed an MLC lanyard on my desk during class. It’s nice to look back and see how God used him, along with all my Lakeside teachers, to guide me to where I am now. I have always been thankful for the foundation my Lakeside education gave me.

Richard Draeger Jr. (‘98) Shanghai, China I am in my 10th year in China and am an Assistant Professor at Shanghai International Studies University.

In 2017, I earned my Ph.D. in Communication from UWMilwaukee.

Any teachers stand out?

Mr. Kuehl stands out in my memory. I treasured English Literature, World Literature as well as Speech and College Prep English classes that I had with him. World Lit sparked my curiosity about the world God has created. I also appreciated Herr Walta’s German classes.

They gave me a chance to improve my spoken German, learn Russian in college, and now, as I’m learning Chinese. I also remember Pastor Stueb’s Government and Bible classes. To this day I have the diary he had us keep, The Miracle of My Life, and reminisce with it. I also cherish Pastor Toepel’s Bible classes. Through these courses I grew closer to my Savior Jesus Christ, through the other courses I obtained the skills to serve my neighbor.

Heather (Hellwig ‘96) Rovey San Antonio, Texas I graduated from UW-Madison with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. While in school, I joined the Navy through a scholarship program and have been an active duty Navy officer and pharmacist since.

How prepared were you for life after LL? My experiences in the Navy have been different from what I had growing up. This has helped me appreciate even more the safe, Christian environment in which I lived and went to school. Lutheran education helped keep me grounded in knowledge of my Savior and in Christian principles even when life got tough. I also had a strong background and understanding of why we believe what we do, which helped me be prepared for others’ questions.

Any teacher stand out? Mrs. Grev and Mr. Matthies were awesome volleyball and basketball coaches. Mr. Fenske was an amazing band and music instructor.

I loved literature with Mr. Buege and Composition with Mr. Kuehl and Biology with Mr. Anschuetz.

Favorite memory? That’s a tough one ... probably playing volleyball. I loved running onto the court to our warmup music, having matching shoelaces and hairbands, pass-set-hit teamwork, and the cheers we did when someone had an ace or a kill. I also loved going to Band Fest and putting together amazing music with people from all over in just a few days.

Michael (‘85) and Kristen (Priebe ‘86) Grunewald • Palm Coast, Florida Kristen: I graduated from UW-Madison as an Occupational Therapist in 1990 and married Mike. We lived in Ottawa, Ill., for 10 years; back to Watertown for seven; to Bettendorf, Iowa for 12; and we’ve been in Palm Coast for a year and a half.

My life and experiences ... have been different from what I experienced growing up. This has helped me appreciate even more the safe, Christian environment in which I lived and went to school. —Heather (Hellwig) Rovey ‘96 How prepared were you for life after LL? LL prepared us for lay ministry as well as creating a solid base for our faith to grow. We realized how important schooling was with a Christian basis.

We have been blessed to serve at each of our congregations­—Mike as an elder, teen leader. and I as an organist/pianist, musician, Sunday School, and women’s groups.

During our time in Iowa, our four kids were of high school age. We realized a Christian school during the trying teen years was very important to us and would provide them the same benefits to their faith. We were blessed to be able to arrange housing for our kids to attend Lakeside.

Any teacher stand out or motivate you?

Mr. Fenske with the many band trips/ musical opportunities, Mr. Nolte with A Cappella, Mr Schwartz with Creation Science trips. The smiling faces of “Ma” Mueller and Mrs. Yanggen in the office.

Mr. Ziel with drivers ed and government classes. The list can go on.

David Eaton (‘82) Jakarta, Indonesia I left UWWhitewater with a degree in Accounting.

After two years of working for a CPA firm in Milwaukee, I joined the FBI and spent the next 30 years as a Special Agent, assigned to offices in Norfolk, Va., and San Diego. I spent my final eight years working overseas as an FBI Attaché at U.S. Embassies in Islamabad, Pakistan; Baghdad, Iraq; Kabul, Afghanistan; Dhaka, Bangladesh; and Jakarta, Indonesia. I retired from the FBI about three years ago and now work for the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta helping to train the Indonesian National Police force.

How prepared were you for life after LL? From a spiritual standpoint, LLHS gave me a good foundation that kept my faith strong as an adult, especially when I was assigned overseas with no access to a WELS church. From a secular standpoint, LLHS provided a strong, useful education which prepared me for college and helped me succeed in my professional career.

I’m also thankful that LLHS provided a robust athletic program. The personal challenges, adversity, and competition of varsity athletics, combined with the life lessons and guidance learned from my coaches, all helped prepare me for the challenges of a career in law enforcement.

Which teacher motivated you?

That’s an easy one. My father, John Eaton, was my math teacher during my freshman/sophomore years at LLHS, and he was also my baseball coach. He clearly had the biggest impact on my life and motivated me to do my best to succeed.

Favorite memory?

I would have to say my years on the Warrior Wrestling team. I really enjoyed the sport, and, as I mentioned above, I attribute some of my strongest personal character growth/development to the challenges I encountered as a wrestler.
