Dear Forever Warriors, I pray this edition of the Link finds you all healthy.

Could anyone have imagined we would celebrate one of the greatest Christian holidays without gathering in our churches? Not being able to sit around the Easter table with family and friends? Or missing out on the excitement of an Easter egg hunt with our children or grandchildren? As this Easter may have seemed different, maybe even dismal, I would like to share a bit of hope.

Hope, as many deal with that big question “What if?” What if the curve doesn’t flatten and this is the new norm we will live in? What if we will always be socially distancing ourselves, how will relationships continue to flourish and grow? What if our economy does collapse, how will we continue to feed our families?

If you scramble the words “what if ” the answer is very clear . . . w/faith.

With faith we enter this Easter season witnessing our Risen Lord riding into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, knowing he would have to die so that we would live. His sacrifice assured us eternal life with him in heaven. By faith we continue to walk in a world where sin is all around, and it is by faith we can confidently answer the question “What if?”

We are thankful that Lakeside was able to share the w/faith message when you were here and we are thankful that we continue to share w/faith with our students every day—whether in the classroom or online.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1)

It seems everyone you talk to this spring suddenly knows what “ZOOM” refers to after social distancing became the rule, even if they haven’t any experience with it because of school or work, and LLHS is no exception. And while the transition to teaching and learning online certainly has been filled with challenges and stress, it’s been a blessing for many of our teachers to use technology to stay in touch with students. See page 12 for story.

Pastor Paul Brug Paul Brug, of Racine, an adjunct religion instructor at LLHS from 2001–03 and former St. John, Newville pastor, lost his 20-mo. battle with brain cancer, but won eternal victory April 20, 2020.

In memoriam:

Pastor Robert Krueger ◆ 1934-2020 Robert “Bob” H. Krueger, of New Ulm, Minn., received his eternal crown Sunday, January 5, 2020.

Prof. Krueger began serving your LLHS in 1965, first teaching religion and German, coaching football and basketball, then as principal from 1967-69. He was quoted in our 50th anniversary booklet as recalling that “it was a privilege to be a small part” of Lakeside’s history. We were blessed to have him and rejoice to think that he has been made perfect in heaven!

Faculty Feature:

goodbyes and hello

Farewells are never easy. As your LLHS says goodbye to two faithful workers, we take a moment to honor them and their work. We also say hello to a familiar face, who will be serving in an additional capacity.

Herr says “Auf Wiedersehen” For over five decades, Gerry Walta has been in the halls of Lakeside. He walked in as a freshman in August 1967. He coached LLHS cross country as a UW– Whitewater college student in 1973.

Then in 1978 he returned as a German and history teacher and running coach.

He stepped aside from coaching and partly retired in 2016, but stayed on to teach German. Now, he will fully retire at the end of this school year.

“Yes, we are on our 10th president and our 6th principal since I first walked these halls,” he says.

He’s seen so much change both in the world and on this campus, but some things haven’t changed: “Lakeside has always been blessed with staff willing to go the extra mile. Lakeside students have always been noticeably different in public in the very best ways—in my school travels and activities I have witnessed it many times! Lakeside parents have always supported their children and LLHS with their volunteer time and effort. And always, for everyone, the motivation has been their love for their Savior.”

Darice Brumm is retiring after 22 years in the Extended Learning Center. A 1977 graduate of DMLC, her first call was to Medford, Wis., where she taught grades 1-2 and served as an organist. After she married David, she moved to Lake Mills in 1980, where she taught 3rd grade, team-taught preschool, and worked part time with 8th graders. She began working as a full-time aide in the ELC in 1998.

“When the opening for this job came along, it was the perfect job for me,” she says.

“I enjoy figuring out what makes teens tick, what kind of learners they are and then adapting a teaching style to fit their needs. Every day I am reminded what a real blessing it’s been for me to be working at LLHS.” ELC Director Ruth Hirschfeld, who has worked with Brumm for 15 of those years, shared that Darice “has touched so many students with her matter of fact, unassuming, no-nonsense demeanor. She has shown me how to have patience both with the students and with myself. The knowledge she has shared over the years, not only in her Biology expertise, but in all of the subjects that we support, will be greatly missed!”

Wilkommen, Frau James!

Taking over for Herr Walta is Sara James, who is currently a parttime assistant in the Extended Learning Center.

Sara grew up in small towns in southern Wisconsin and moved about every 5 years as her WELS pastor dad took a new call. She attended Northwestern Preparatory School and then went on to Martin Luther College. After her junior year, she was an au pair in Ratingen, Germany, which “allowed me to gain fluency in German, travel across much of Europe, play soccer, and make lifelong friends,” she says. After graduating from MLC, she was assigned as a tutor at LPS, where she monitored dorm life, taught German 2 & 3, and coached soccer.

Shortly thereafter, as part of her eight-year obligation in the Army Reserves, she served in Kuwait and Iraq. “I met my husband, Sam, who courted me with lukewarm water and T-rations,” she says. Upon returning to the U.S., she completed her masters in German and Education at UW-Madison, then received a second masters in German from Middlebury College in Vermont. “I completed the doctoral studies coursework at UW-Madison, but discontinued the program after passing my preliminary exams to raise my kids, who are thrilled to have to learn German at home!” she shares.

The Federation Connection e-newsletter, archived at issuu.com/llhs, documents student and school blessings on a monthly basis, but we’re thrilled to include just a smattering of the year’s many good news stories here too!

Are we college-readying?

LLHS Class of 2019 ACT results released: of the 110 members of the 2019 class, 87 wrote the exam. On a 36-point scale, their composite score was 24.1 (state average is 20.3). This keeps Lakeside among the top 2% of over 460 high schools in the state, as reported by the Wisconsin Department of Instruction. Once again, Lakeside’s mathematics scores led the four tested areas with a composite score of 25.6.

support for teens. With sponsors and more than 60 teams paying to participate, well over $3,500 was raised to help support Christian Family Solutions (CFS). Through this national program, Lutheran high school students facing challenges qualify for up to five free sessions with a licensed professional CFS counselor. CFS used the LL event to help set a template for other schools to help raise awareness and funds. See bit.ly/ CFSreport

New: LL gets DPI “report card”

Forensics see decade of dominance

The State Department of Public Instruction (DPI) creates report cards for private schools based on students participating in School Choice.

They assess student achievement, improvements in achievement, and potential post high school success.

For 2018-19, we received an overall score of 84.8, which is a 5-star rating of “significantly exceeds expectations.” This ranks your LLHS ranks 29th out of 428 private schools in the state.

Mathletes multiply success

At both Fall and Spring Capitol Conference Math Meets, both Varsity Team 1 and JV Team 1 took 1st place.

At the spring meet, sophomore Caleb Koester, JV (St. Paul, Fort) and senior Gilbert Haw (St. Paul, Lake Mills), Varsity, had the highest scores among all participants at the meet. In addition, our varsity math team took first place in the year-long MLC Meet Math national competition. At the very competitive Madison East Math Meet, our JV and Varsity teams each took first place. Mr. Todd Hackbarth is the team advisor.

NHS helps set template for CFS

In November, our National Honor Society hosted a cornhole tournament in the east gym called “Tosses for Teens” to raise funds and bring awareness of the growing need for mental health

Warrior forensics participated in the Capitol Conference Tournament at Lake Mills High School on Feb. 3, competing in 17 speaking/acting categories. Among the 10 schools there, your LLHS, coached

by Mr. Steve Lauber, finished first with a total of 333 points, ahead of Lake Mills (189) and Lodi (154). The win marks our 10th straight conference championship.

The team was unable to attempt its ninth straight top-5 finish at the UW-Madison State Festival this spring. Next year!

Robotics team goes to state tourney: team members excel elsewhere too Our 3-year old Warrior Robotics Club sent its first team to the State VEX Robotics Championship in February.

Comprised of seniors, Katelyn McGurk (St. Paul, Lake Mills), Trevor Geerdts (Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel, Madison) and Gil Haw, the team strategically drove the robot they designed, built, and programmed to score points in robot-torobot matches and skills challenges. (In other news, Haw is a Finalist in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program, marking his place in the top 1% of 1.4 million in a process that began his junior year, and McGurk won a $10,000 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Initiative Scholarship that recognizes students who put forth extraordinary effort to succeed in the classroom and have overcome significant obstacles or adversity.)

Finally,what it’s all about

A regional loss to Kettle Moraine Lutheran brought a victory for the girls basketball program. WIAA officials sent a letter to the principals that said in part: “In a world that seems to be dominated by headlines about poor sportsmanship, we experienced the opposite in Friday night’s girls basketball game.You should be proud of all who were associated with this game.”

Two generations of love

Sue adds, “When I was preparing for my freshman year at LLHS, I can still remember my mom saying that maybe I would meet my future husband at Lakeside. I thought her comment was rather silly at the time, but she was right!”

Todd and Sue got to know each other on their daily bus ride. Sue was from Beaver Dam and Todd from Columbus. “We started dating in the fall of our junior year (‘78), were May Banquet king and queen in 1979, graduated in 1980, and were married in September 1981,” she says.

“Dan and I met freshman year and became friends right away. We came close to dating in high school, but never did,” says Heather, even though they did attend May Banquet together.

“Our favorite memory—without a doubt!—is May Banquet when we were king and queen,” says Sue, “but we also had fun going grocery shopping for Miss Plehn (Home Ec) our senior year.” Todd enjoyed singing in A Cappella with Mr. Nolte and Sue has fond memories of Mrs. Corlett’s sewing classes.

Over the years, Todd has been a mechanic, auto body technician, and machine operator, as well as a partner in two business ventures with his younger brother. Sue has worked in food service and floral and greenhouse industries.

“When we started our family, I was blessed to stay-at-home!” says Sue. “When our children—Justin ‘04 and Heather ‘06—were a little older, Todd and I started an organic greenhouse/produce business which involved our whole family.” Todd is currently an automation technician for MGS Equipment Group in Germantown and Sue is a sales associate at Gysbers Jewelry in Waupun.

Their favorite Lakeside memories are of Pastor Stuebs’ religion class “and hanging out at all the sporting events and supporting our Warriors,” says Heather.

Reunion story & then some...

October 26, 2019 was a special day for two Forever Warriors. Lorena (Smith) Mendelsohn and Tom Walton, both ‘67, were married at Lake Lawn Resort, on the shore of Delavan Lake, Wis.

“We went our separate ways after graduating in 2006 and lost touch.” Six years later, in early 2012, they reconnected on Facebook through Words With Friends and started dating shortly after. “When we reconnected, we both said we always wanted to date each other in high school, but it was never the right time,” she says.

Dan proposed on New Year’s Eve and they married Sept. 7, 2013. They have three children: Garrett 11, Karsten 5, and Eve 2.

“God has truly blessed us!” Heather says.

Dan has worked for American Packaging Corporation for eight years and is a Team Lead. “I am a stay-at-home mom so our middle child can receive in-home therapy for his autism,” says Heather.

After hearing that both were widowed, Ellyn (Pederson) Welling mentioned Lorena’s name to Tom at their 50th class reunion (Lorena was not there). Tom shared with Ellyn that he had a crush on Lorena for three years at Lakeside but never told her or anyone else.

A “nudge” came months later, during a phone conversation. Ellyn told Tom that Lorena had moved back to Wis. Tom could not speak a sound but floated back to January 3, 1964, when he first laid eyes on her. His silence prompted Ellyn to say, “Tom, do I have to tell you what to do?”

(She did proceed to “advise” him as he was lost in thought.) The fuse was lit.

Tom was not going to let Lorena get away again. After a month or so of texting, calls, and emails, the two met and never looked back. Fifty two years after graduation and almost 57 years after Tom first saw Lorena, the two became husband and wife. They both feel like they’re 15 years old again.

Says Ellyn, “Praise the Lord!” †

Dennis & Karen (Wendorf) Lembrich ‘63 began going “steady” as sophomores on Feb. 6, 1961 and have been together ever since. Married May 1964, they have 2 children, 3 grandchildren & 1 greatgrandchild. Moved from Wis. to the Houston area in 1979 where they still live and enjoy retirement. Dennis woodworks and Karen is a MARY KAY Consultant.

Eric & Cindy (Koch) Wegner ‘82 met in Herr Walta’s German 1 class in 1978 and hung out with the same friend group but never dated.

Eric asked Cindy to homecoming sophomore year; she declined. 25 years later, they reconnected and dated for 2 years, marrying New Year’s Eve 2009. Eric claims to be the poster child for persistence, only needing to wait 25 years for a date. Cindy shares that one of the kindest things he recently told her is that “every guy remembers his first love...some of us are lucky enough to marry her!” God had a plan for our lives and we are thankful for His blessings.

Dan (‘94) & Kristi (Raether ‘95) Anton began dating in 1992, she a sophomore & he a junior, and married in 1998. Blessed with Riley (10) and Cameron (5), they “will always be forever grateful for our Lakeside experience that brought us together and the many lifelong friendships that were made along the way.”

Charles & Elise (Stauffer) Hougan ’03 met were on freshman Homecoming court together and began dating as juniors. “We have not left each other’s side since!” says Elise. Starting Bethany Lutheran College together, Elise finished her Applied Science degree at MATC. Married on July 29, 2006, they added son Blake on Sept.

2, 2012. Living in Stoughton, they attend Abiding Shepherd in Cottage Grove, and Charles works in construction while Elise is an office assistant at a Madison accounting firm.

Nathan & Kaycee Welke (Hafenstein) Welke ’01 were not always high school sweethearts. In a mutual group of band/ choir friends, they often played Euchre during downtime and didn’t always get along. Dating a bit senior year, they went to May Banquet as friends. Most of college was “will they or won’t they” status.

Kaycee says, “It’s obvious now that God was nurturing our friendship. Feb. 2005 marked the start of serious dating and

by June, we were engaged! It’s true that everything works out in God’s time, even if it means being in the friend zone for 4 years!” Married for 13 years, they have Regan ‘27 and Aria ‘32.

Philip & Katrina (Krakow) Meinel ’03 began dating after graduation.

August 9, 2003 was Jason Fry’s last party before college when Philip asked for Katrina’s number (with the help of Mama Fry). He called the next day and “we’ve been together since. It’s been amazing and wild. We married our best friend [June 26, 2004], we grew up together, and, God-willing, we’ll grow old together. God is so good!!” says Katrina.

Ryan (‘13) & Katelyn (Genz ‘12) Broedlow dated all through Lakeside and married in August 2016; they just recently added a “beautiful baby girl, Brinley, and also have a fur baby named Remi.”

Jake & Hannah (Varney) Marasch ‘15 met as percussionists in band and started dating junior year. They married September 14, 2019, on their 6th-year anniversary of dating.

He began playing in 2012 while in the Marine Corps and loves the game for its combination of high intensity and high cognitive demand.

Katelyn Richter (‘17) and Tim Hodel (‘16) were married Nov. 16, 2019. Pastor Clark Schultz officiated the wedding.

Other Forever Warriors in the party were Sharilyn (Hodel ‘12) Zimmerman, Stephen Phelps (‘16), Alex Pillard (‘16), Josh Schoenfeld (‘16), Andrew Fritz (‘17), Haley Kooiman (‘17) and Ben Hodel (‘18).

Madison Dumke and Samuel Schulz (both ‘15) were friends since freshman year, started dating in college, and got engaged in grad school.

They’re planning an August wedding.

Kelly Skewes and Jacob Borth (both ‘13) were married Aug. 17, 2019.

Allison (Homan ‘08) and Ben Petzel welcomed their first children, twins! Faith JoyAnn and Jonah Milo were born July 10, 2019. They live in Mankato, Minn., where Allison is a physical therapist at the Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinic and Ben is an Admissions Counselor at Bethany Lutheran College.

Caleb Meyer (‘08) played for the NOLA Gold, a pro rugby team, during his rookie

Alex (‘07) and Elizabeth Schilling welcomed their 5th child, William Kade, in October 2019.

Phil (‘05) and Jake Winkler (‘02) participate in Senior Men’s Rugby at the USA Rugby Division 2 level with the Madison-based Wisconsin Rugby Club.

Their teams qualified for the National Elite 8 scheduled for May 2020, and a shot at a National Championship.

Both played in the national championship in ‘12, ‘13, and ‘15, winning in 2013.

Susan (Gennerman ‘75) Kielley passed away Nov. 1, 2019, after a short, valiant fight with cancer.

Peter Lehmann (‘68) entered heaven’s gates on Oct. 12, 2019.

Judith Smith passed away at age 92 Nov. 27, 2019. Judith was Lakeside’s lunch program manager for 22 years. Funeral services were held Dec. 6 at St. Paul, Fort.

As is the case at virtually every college across the country, MLC graduates will not walk across a stage in celebration. So this MLC Day, May 6, MLC is inviting all of us to support and encourage Martin Luther College graduates as they complete their preparations to serve as gospel ministers for our congregations and schools. This year’s MLC Day is focusing on graduating seniors; meanwhile, LLHS can also specifically celebrate these seven Forever Warriors!

What could this look like for you?

• Pray for our students, faculty, and staff, and for MLC’s mission of training the next generation of called workers to share the gospel with the world. Write a prayer for the seniors in general, or for an individual graduating senior and send it to mlcday@ mlc-wels.edu. Those prayers will be posted on the MLC Day prayer page or posted for that individual senior.

A graduate of UW-Oshkosh, Julie has been a neonatal nurse for over 40 years and loves what she does. “Caring for sick and premature babies is what God called her to do and it shows each and every day.

Her compassionate and caring qualities help her work with neonatal babies and families going through tough times while showing them love and hope that they will get through all the struggles they face” says her daughter Jen Lucas (‘09).

“She puts God’s Word at the center of everything she does and it always guides her to make the best decision possible for each and every baby. It is evident that her schooling through Lakeside guided her career choices and helped her become the wonderful nurse she is today.”

Brock Vredeveld (‘14) RN, Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee

Dave has worked for Ryan Brothers for 10 years. “I started EMS in 1984 and have been in my local departments ever since. Here at home I run as an EMR and firefighter on Clyman FD,” he says. “I believe in helping out when people are in need. I feel that going to Lakeside engraved that in me.”

Brock obtained a BSN from Wisconsin Lutheran College while also playing college baseball. “Once a Warrior, always a Warrior stands true for me at WLC and LLHS.” Though nursing school was a challenge, the highlight of the program was “a life-changing 17-day trip to Zambia where we were able to witness our faith while studying global healthcare and providing screenings and education.”

Tina (Berg ‘96) Kraft RN, UW Hospital, Madison Otolaryngology department. (ENT) Tina supervises 13 registered nurses and oversees the daily operations of 15 surgeons, 2 nurse practitioners, and 5 physician assistants at 2 different locations.

She received an associate nursing degree from Madison College and completed her bachelors in nursing through Grand Canyon University in 2017.

He now works on the cardiac step down unit with patients who have a variety of heart health issues. “I enjoy the people, challenges, and the opportunity to learn more while helping others,” he says.

He is engaged to Riley, whom he met at WLC, and they are planning a summer 2020 wedding. “LLHS prepared me in more ways than one, but most importantly it reinforced my Christian upbringing with Christ at the center. I enjoy working at the hospital where it is evident to me that God and science fit closely together,” he says.

“Being able to share my faith story is pretty easy, especially now with the worldwide health pandemic. A nursing career is one of service and love. I can make a difference in people’s lives with my education and by sharing Jesus.”

two long-time warrior coaches step down Tim Matthies has stepped down as Lakeside’s girls basketball coach after 22 seasons. He finished with a 377-144 record and led the Lady Warriors to a WIAA D3 state girls basketball championship in 2001. They also reached state in 2002, losing in the semifinal.

He shared, “No reason other than it’s time—time to spend with family that has always supported me and time for someone else to have the opportunity to lead the program. It was an enormous privilege and a ton of fun for me to coach girls’ teams that gave it their all in response to Jesus’ love for them.”

He will continue teaching and coaching JV softball. “Tim has been the girls head coach since 1998 with tremendous success. His humble, ministry-minded, hardworking nature, along with his genuine love, care, and concern for the physical and spiritual growth of each of the girls will be missed,” says Activities Director Todd Jahns.

Head Wrestling Coach Mike Twohig has also announced that he is stepping down. Mike took over the program in 2011.

“Wrestling is a small but close family,” says Twohig. “It was my privilege to be a part of the team for so long. I coached around 200 kids in the time that I was involved, with a state placer (Ben Ewings ‘13—5th place, heavyweight). We also worked with one other state qualifier, several sectional qualifiers, many conference champs, tournament champs, and regional place winners. Our goal was to succeed, but never lose sight of why we compete: God’s glory—and fun! This is a game we play!”

Twohig will continue to assist the wrestling program as needed. His busy family life and his business, Edge Construction, Inc. keeps him active. He also hosts talk radio’s “The Home Remodeling Show” (local: Saturdays at 8 am on 1310 AM and Sundays at 8 am on 100.5 FM).

Jahns adds, “We offer our congratulations and thanks to Coach Twohig for so faithfully serving the wrestling program here at Lakeside.” If you know of any individuals who would be qualified candidates to take over our Warrior wrestling program, please forward their names to A.D. how your LLHS is handling with the history-making viral spring of 2020 We’ve always known we have an amazing, committed, God-blessed faculty—now we’ve got even more proof.

LLHS converts to distance learning Even before Governor Evers instituted the first iteration of Wisconsin’s “Safer at Home” mandate, our teachers were converting their classes to be delivered in a remote learning format. Students were on spring break during early uncertainty (March 15–21). Losing almost no time, we began virtual classes on Wednesday, March 25, after, as Principal Grasby shared, “many hours of planning and some Herculean efforts by Lakeside’s faculty and staff.”

forget the value of relationship-building. Beyond the comprehensive learning tools Mr. Hackbarth employs, he (and many other teachers) find ways to insert fun (again, check out fb.com/yourllhs). For him, each Friday brings a theme, from Wacky Hat Day (see cover of this issue) to Live Zumba Break Day. A popular day was “Bring your Pet to Class Day” (see photo directly below). Mr. Hackbarth saw dozens of live and otherwise pets, everything from dogs to fish and stuffed animals to a hawk, suggesting that maybe Mr. Hackbarth’s classes have either gone to the dogs or are, quite literally, for the birds.

As much as faculty wish the students were in the classroom because we love seeing their faces, our teachers are staying connected and providing our students with a quality Christ-centered education in a very challenging time for everyone.

What does this look like?

Each teacher has a unique way of delivering content (our Facebook page has several examples of the creativity and variety several are employing). When we looked for an example to share here, however, it was hard to pass by Mr. Hackbarth’s classroom.

For his math classes, he begins by recording a lesson that’s uploaded to an unlisted YouTube page. “Students watch it and complete an assignment, then send me a photo of their homework,” he says.

The next day, during their 30-minute Zoom® class, they correct and review their homework. He then uses an iPad that casts to his laptop, which allows students to see—in real time—the review work he is doing.

Maintaining relationships While it might be “pajama day” every day for many students, teachers don’t It might be easy to take for granted our daily chapel, devotions, or prayers; maybe you did when you were a teen?
