Dear Forever Warriors, Last May, 111 seniors graduated, pushing the pool of Forever Warriors to nearly 5,000. God is so faithful, and we are so blessed. Because every one of our Forever Warriors matter, our number one goal is to stay connected. We want to provide lifelong opportunities for Forever Warriors to engage and connect with Lakeside after graduation by building our relationships through communications, events, and other areas of involvement.

A little over eighteen months ago, our Alumni Executive Committee (AEC) was formed.

Our job is to advance Lakeside’s mission by cultivating and sustaining lasting relationships between alumni and LLHS. We meet quarterly to discuss fun ways to engage, communicate, involve, and acknowledge alum. We are excited about what’s coming up.

Jess Meyer Previously part-time, Jess now serves full-time as the LL Alumni Relations and Event Coordinator. “God is doing great things here at Lakeside and I am happy to be a part of it,” she says.

Before joining the staff at Lakseside, she worked as the school secretary at Eastside, Madison, for eight years. She and hubby Aaron were high school sweethearts and have three children.

Faculty Feature: New faces on campus!

Your Lakeside Lutheran is pleased to have several new staff members on campus this fall serving in various capacities, from teaching to administration to guidance and groundskeeping. Please keep our faculty and staff in your prayers as they strive to serve the Savior and the Lakeside family in ways that witness to His glory alone.

Eric Dorn

Sophomore religion, boys varsity soccer Growing up, Mr. Dorn lived in West Bend, Wis., Stillwater, Minn, and Crete, Ill., where he graduated from Illinois Lutheran High School in 2013.

After studying business for two years at Wisconsin Lutheran College, he transferred to Martin Luther College to get his teaching degree. He graduated from MLC in 2018 and then taught 3rd-grade at St. John’s Lutheran Primary School in Antigua, West Indies.

He has played soccer his entire life, including at WLC and MLC, followed by a year of assistant coaching MLC women’s soccer.

Eric has three sisters, one brother, and two brothers-in-law. His parents and all of his siblings are either teaching, have taught, or will be in teaching.

Todd Jahns

Activities Director, freshmen PhyEd, boys varsity basketball Now in his 32nd year, Mr. Jahns began teaching at Faith, Fond du Lac; then four years at public schools in Chilton and Fond du Lac; 24 years at Kettle Moraine Luth.; and two years at WLC. As KML basketball coach, he led teams to four conference championships, a run of 13 consecutive winning seasons, and a state tournament appearance in 2018.

Todd has a degree in PhyEd and Coaching and a masters in Exercise

Science and Admin, both from UW-LaCrosse. He has also coached football, softball, and strength training/ conditioning.

He is licensed to officiate football, baseball, and softball; enjoys training and competing in long distance races and triathlons; and enjoys landscaping, hunting, fishing, and traveling with his wife, Susie, a cardiac rehab RN. Two grown children, Zachary, an electrician working for Faith Technologies and Katy, an Admissions Counselor at WLC, are both planning 2020 weddings.

“To see God’s hand so evident over the past six months is an understatement.

I am humbled by his grace and tremendously excited to begin my ministry at Lakeside Lutheran,” he says.

Dorlene Schroeder Counselor

With a master’s in Guidance and Counseling from UW-W, Mrs. Schroeder provides academic, career, and personal counseling. “I thank God for this new opportunity!” she says.

Dorlene has taught at Prospect Elementary and Lake Mills High School, and was elementary/middle school guidance counselor at Swallow School in Hartland. She also taught 8th grade part-time at St. Matthew, Oconomowoc, for 10 years.

She and Bob are members at St. Matthew, with three married sons and two grandchildren. She enjoys family, the Packers, and golfing.

Erin Koschnitzke

Family/Consumer Science, Health, JV2 girls basketball Stepping in last spring to finish the school year when Mrs. Sandi Corlett passed away, Mrs. Koschnitzke now continues in that role, teaching Foods, Child Development and sophomore Health classes.

Erin has taught in Florida, Texas, and Wisconsin. She and her husband, Chris, and their six children, belong to St. John, Newville, where he is pastor. “In my spare time, I’ve grown to enjoy taking care of my health through CrossFit with my husband,” she says.

Dan Schultz

Grounds Manager He may be new on staff, but Mr. Schultz is a familiar face. A 2004 grad, he has been an assistant Warrior football coach for several years. He comes to Lakeside from Dodge County Parks, where he was Supervisor for seven years.

He and wife Laura have two children and are members at Zion, Columbus.

In this new role, Dan is responsible for all maintenance and improvement of the grounds, including preventive maintenance. He’s also responsible for field marking for all outdoor competitions and consulting on capital purchases, as well as supervising and training groundskeeping staff and volunteers.

Alum Feature:

a slam-dunk opportunity!

When David Luehring (‘14) was offered an internship with the Milwaukee Bucks shortly after graduation from Bethany Lutheran College in May 2018, he couldn’t pass it up. “I was applying all over the country for jobs,” he says. “I settled on the Bucks because it was close to home and a good stepping stone to working full-time in sports.”

What does a Bucks intern do?

“As a video intern, I was responsible for filming and editing much of the content that goes out on the Bucks social media channels. From simple highlight videos, to community relations recaps, and full on cinematic mini movies, I was a part of it all.

Career advice?

For a student looking to get into the videography world, Luehring recommends: “Get inspired!

Find something you are passionate about, and suddenly the videos will be easier to make.” __________________________________ Career goals Work for a major sports broadcasting company such as ESPN or Fox Sports

Fave player?

“My favorite player, as most would guess, is Giannis Antetokounmpo. He’s just a fun guy to be around at various events. He’s always happy and enjoying the moment, plus he’s REALLY good at basketball.”

“I was surprised with how involved they allowed me to be. I was able to work on some of the biggest marketing pieces of the year. From day one, I was involved with great projects like: jersey releases, behind the scenes coverage, The Road to Playoffs, and a personal video that was used in Khris Middleton’s contract negotiations.”

What’s it like on the other side of the camera?

“My favorite memory of working with the team comes from the playoffs. It was always an amazing atmosphere. We would always film on the floor during game intros up until the tip off. It was always amazing how deafeningly loud

How’d you get started?

Mr. Hackbarth’s videography class was the spark that started it all. “I was a teenager who didn’t really know what profession I wanted to get into. Then my senior year, I took the videography class, and was hooked. Advised by Mr. Hackbarth, I ended up studying Media Arts at Bethany Lutheran College, and the rest is history.”

Fave Lakeside memory?

Luehring was active in cross country, track, A Cappella choir, and band. “I have great memories from Lakeside.” He notes that “kinda spearheading the student section ‘heads’ craze in 2014 was one of my favorites.” >> Next step?

“As the internship ends this fall, I will be moving on and looking for other opportunities in media and video fields.”

Other video experience Luehring worked Maverick Hockey Weekend, an event of Minnesota State University Division 1 Men’s Hockey, where he gained “real-world” experience as a camera operator, technical director and video editor.

He also continued to be a part of video production working with KTV, the Mankato public access channel run and managed by the production studio at Bethany Lutheran College.

In fall of 2017, his senior year at Bethany, he interned at Reach Records, a music label in Atlanta that focuses on Christian rap and hip-hop. He worked with the label’s social media and e-mail campaigns, made promotional videos, animated gifs, boomerangs for instagram, and other assorted graphics.

First LLHS graduating class a grateful reunion

For many, it’s hard to imagine getting together with people from school 57 years ago, but for Lakeside’s class of 1962, it’s both timelessly poignant and as familiar as yesterday.

In July, about two-dozen alumni gathered for a reunion at St. Paul in Fort Atkinson, the first site of the Darrell Krause, Tom Witte school. That school has been razed, but those who attended haven’t forgotten the lessons—and even the good-natured hijinks—they shared together.

The students appreciated the opportunity this new school brought. Tom Baker recalled wanting to continue his faith-based education past grade school, but his parents weren’t able to afford it. “I lived in Fort and wanted to go to Lakeside, but my dad said ‘no,’” he remembered.

“Finally, he said if I could make my own tuition, I could go. So I raised strawberries to make the money.”

From the first principal’s pen

Prof. Lloyd Huebner, now 94, was called to serve as first principal. He wasn’t able to make it to the reunion due to healthrelated limitations, but he and wife Inez were there in spirit and in the hearts of the students he taught.

“We had 41 freshmen in 1958,” Huebner recalled. “The plan was to add more each year, and I was to be the principal and teacher. And I taught everything . . . math, science, English and religion. I was also pastor of the school.”

It wasn’t long before the school moved to its current site in Lake Mills, where it was renamed Lakeside Lutheran High School. Classes began being taught in that building in 1963.

“I appreciated working with and teaching high school-age kids,” he explained. “It was always gratifying to teach them the importance of God’s word. Parochial school was common for gradeschool students in those days, but there was nothing in the area beyond that. I’m glad we were able to offer that opportunity to young adults.” page 6 | Lakeside Lutheran Link | 2019 Issue 2 | llhs.org

He continued: “Prof. Huebner was like a father to me.

He was always very positive. He encouraged me to take Latin—when I could hardly speak English!—but he helped me and I did pass, because of him. He taught us four years of religion, and I still try to read scripture every day. Religion was the only class I ever got A’s in. I really enjoyed going to Lakeside, and my son went there, too.”

Terry Gueldner, master of ceremonies for the reunion, said he’s grateful he and his classmates were given a choice of high schools. “We prayed about it a lot, made a choice and we haven’t regretted it since,” he said.

Others remembered some of the good-natured pranks they played, common among high school students everywhere. Mary Anne (Froemming) Kunz, for example, relayed how one Christmas, a bunch of students decided to decorate the school bus windows with pine tree boughs. “Afterward, we got called into Prof.

Huebner’s office and you could tell he wanted to laugh while he scolded us,” she said. “He told us it was not a good choice.”

“We got into some trouble,” Roger Lemke recalled with a chuckle. “There was that one time a bunch of us broke into the kitchen in the basement of the old school and tried to see who could get the most eggs into the band’s tuba. Someone ratted us out; I’m not sure who.”

But Huebner was wise and kind while finding those “teachable moments.” “He told us to ‘always look at the sunrise,’” Lemke recalled.

1967

No pic: Class of 1967 decided that it would be great to get together every 2 years for a reunion.

This July they held their 52nd class reunion at Kavanaugh’s in Madison with 21 classmates attending. What a blessing it is to reconnect with past classmates.

1969

1979/\ Class of 1979 had a great weekend of fellowship on July 19-20. Over 25 classmates met for

bowling and drinks on Friday in Watertown. They followed that with a school tour on Saturday because many had not been back to campus since graduation. A total of 33 Forever Warriors plus spouses gathered at the Hayloft for dinner on Saturday. Classmates came all the way from Texas, Florida, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri and Utah. Thanks to Dean Morgan & committee for organizing such a fun weekend!

/\ Class of 1969 met at Hi-Way Harry’s for their 50th on June 22. 40 Forever Warriors & 22 spouses attended this funfilled event complete with dinner and prizes; they also generously donated $600 to Lakeside. This past July, Jacob Ulrich (‘19), Nate Krenke (‘22), Lydia Krenke (‘20), Lillie Johnstone (‘17) and Tina (Nell ‘83) Ulrich spent 12 days teaching at the Vacation Bible School at Martin Luther School in Plzen, Czech Republic. What an opportunity—to share God’s Word in a country that is 90% atheist.

Hannah Hackbarth (‘11) married Jason Enderle this past July. The happy couple currently resides in Ashland, Wis., where Jason is a pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church and Our Savior Lutheran Church in Phillips. Hannah will be working in the Ashland community, sharing the good news of Jesus in other ways.

Connor Vredeveld (‘11) and Bethany Unkefer were joined in marriage on March 16, 2019, in Phoenix. The newlyweds live in Milwaukee, where Connor is employed

by Aon as an actuarial consultant and Bethany is a graphic designer for Time of Grace Ministries.

Last school year, Forever Warriors Mandi Hoeppner (‘05) and Danny Hafenstein (‘11) both taught in the Fine Arts department at Catholic Central High School in Burlington, Wis., Mandi in Visual Art and Design and Danny in Performing Arts.

(As of 2019-20, Danny accepted a call from Wisco.)

On Sept. 13, Michelle (Reid ‘06) Stefan Wolski welcomed Jordan Elizabeth into their family. Her 2 big brothers are excited for their little sister.

On Sept. 18, Glen (‘00) and Kaitlyn Pufahl finalized the adoption of Olivia Lavon who was born April 9, 2019. He shared, “It is official! We are a family of 3! God is great!!!”

Peter Heyn (’98) was installed as pastor of Living Water Ev. Lutheran in San Angelo, Tex., June 2, 2019.

Formerly known as Our Redeemer Lutheran, the congregation is a mission restart transitioning from WELS to ELS membership.

Peter and Andrea have three daughters: Elliana, Emma and Clara.

2019 REUNIONS Sara (Koenig ‘86) Junio has coauthored a book with FEW International Publications. It is scheduled for release this fall, available on Amazon. “The Identity Effect” is a collection of powerful stories written by women whose lives, hearts, and minds have been transformed by discovering their true identity in Christ.

Mark Pankow (‘81) and Sheri Mohr were married in Wausau last March. Mark’s best man was alum Dan Seelman (‘81).

Tami (Jaeckel ‘77) Waggoner graduated from DMLC in 1981. She taught in Minneapolis; Crete, Ill.; and Upper Marlboro, Maryland. She and her husband became innkeepers in Fort Madison, Iowa. After a short stopover in Rockford, Ill., they moved home to Fort in fall of 2014.

on the phone when you call St. Paul, Fort Atkinson.

Recently they added the title of grandparents to their resumes. Granddaughter Ruby was born in June and they love every minute.

“I’ve always heard being a grandparent is the best. I wholeheartedly agree,” says Tami.

Jay Royal Ihlenfeld (‘69) passed away on Sunday, June 9 after a lingering illness.

A private burial was held at Union Cemetery in Jefferson.

Andrea Dunsmoor (‘68) passed away on June 12, 2019.

Andrea served her Lord gladly as a Lutheran elementary school teacher for 42 years. A memorial service was June 22 at Bethany, Fort Atkinson.

It was sophomore or junior year (Class of ‘88...help me out!) and the Sesame Street theme. I was on the float committee and we built a giant Mr. Snuffleupagus out of chicken wire on top of a trailer in Mr. Gulczynski’s garage. After a week or two of work, we ran out of tissue paper stuffing with a partially bald Snuffy...although, that was a good thing when it was time to move him out of the garage...he was too tall and rubbed the top of the garage door. We ended up buying brown rugs to throw across the top of his body!

Homecoming was always fun, but it got REALLY fun after I graduated! Not only does dear ol’ Lakeside feed my family, but they offer prizes, hand out goodies, and treat us like...well, like we’ve come home.

Alum Zone is the place to celebrate homecoming, see old friends, and meet new ones.

I love Alum Zone for many reasons! It’s a fun space to come and gather in our own space, reconnect with people who attended LLHS who may not have kids here and meet up with those whose kiddos are soon to come here.

It’s always fun to reminisce and laugh about the “good ol’ days” as well!
