Course description for 1st-year Academy course: Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) IED is a project-based learning class using the curriculum from Project Lead the Way (PLTW). This nationally-acclaimed curriculum uses technology tools to solve real-life problems.

Students use 3D solid-modeling software, sketching, and design techniques to solve proposed problems. Students learn the design process, research and analysis, teamwork, communication methods, engineering standards, technical documentation and are introduced to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) careers.

Your LLHS is focusing on STEM today because 28 percent of high school freshman declare an interest in a STEM-related field, but by the time they graduate, 57 percent of those students have lost interest. One of the goals of LLHS STEM education is to show students as young as 14 the many college and career options STEM can open for them.

In 2018-19, Lakeside began a STEM Academy designed to educate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Rather than teach them as four different subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning style that is design-based, and has real-world applications.

Lakeside Lutheran prepares students for lives of Christian service in STEM fields by facilitating the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum. Over the next two years, Lakeside Lutheran will offer a total of four different courses in the PLTW engineering curriculum.

We also offer a STEM Club that allows students to be involved in STEM activities and field trips without having a rigorous course of study at school. A branch of the STEM Club includes a robotics club, where students are involved with VEX™ robotics and compete in at least three robotics tournaments each year. Finally, to help recruit young women, an often under-represented population into the engineering field, we have one of the first high school chapters of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). In memory of Mrs. Sandi Corlett

On Saturday, March 30, 2019, God called Lakeside Lutheran’s Family and Consumer Science (FACS) teacher, Sandra Corlett, home to heaven after a battle with cancer. Her funeral was held at Lakeside on April 8.

Sandra Grandt accepted a call to teach Home Economics at Lakeside Lutheran High School in 1975. She married Alan Corlett on April 8, 1978, and they raised their five children in Lake Mills: Susan (Joe Marola) Corlett ‘98, Catherine (Patrick Carey) Corlett-Carey ‘01, Caroline (Brandon) Wales ‘03, Sarah (Ryan Smith) ‘05, and James Corlett ‘08.

She returned to the classroom, teaching English Composition at Lakeside in 1996-97. After earning a Masters of Education in Professional Development from Cardinal Stritch University in 2001, she returned to teach Family and Consumer Science part-time at Lakeside. She also used her creative touch designing costumes for drama performances. The drama department honored her at their spring production April 26-27 with lapel ribbons (see actor inset photo), t-shirts (at right) and more as reminders that she’s now on the greatest stage with her Savior.

Just before she went home to heaven, her pastor at St. Paul Lake Mills, Doug Tomhave, asked, “Do you believe that Jesus is your Savior?”

She replied, “Absolutely.”

STEM and LLHS STEM Academy begins

The 2018-19 school year saw the inaugural cohort for the LLHS STEM Academy. Entrance in the Academy requires a separate enrollment application and uses nationally-accredited, activity-, project-, and problem-based Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum. Our STEM Academy is meant to challenge those with interest in science, technology, engineering and math fields and who are highly motivated to learn. PLTW requires LLHS to partner with local industries and work to find mentors who can help answer questions about future courses of study, college programs, internships, or challenges in the classroom. The first class offered was Introduction to Engineering Design, and Principles of Engineering will be offered fall semester 2019.

Alumni in STEM

Before the formal STEM curriculum, Lakeside certainly has had a vibrant history of science, math and tech ed courses that thousands of grads—alumni and alumnae—have put to work. Likewise, though this past year was our first year of a formal Society of Women Engineers (more info on p. 2), many of our alumnae are in STEMrelated fields—and they are grateful for the many ways Lakeside prepared them for their careers.

Thanks to these alum 15 years out from graduation who responded to some questions about STEM and LLHS: Natasha (Fabian) Steenbergen (LL ‘04) Senior Sales Operations Planning Analyst Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Milwaukee “I manage global inventory levels for Softail and Electric motorcycle families, and request production that supports our inventory strategy having the right bikes in the right places at the right times.”

How did Lakeside prepare you for further education?

I was the Editor-InChief of the Warrior Times Weekly and co-Editor of KEMO [yearbook], so I gained valuable experience in seeing ideas through to fruition, and continuously improving my products. Mrs. Schommer went the extra mile to make sure I was ready when it was time to leave the nest and graduate.

The coursework across various classes gave me a foundation in research and development, data validation, and conducting myself in an ethical manner. I attended public colleges and never wavered in knowing the Christ-centered way to conduct my activities.

What do you find rewarding about working in the STEM field?

I love how fast manufacturing changes. There are so many revelations when you’re customer-led that require new ways of doing business to respond faster and stay profitable. The textbook principles still hold, but we try new things far more than I ever expected to. have all changed. The job I’ll hold 3-5 years from now probably doesn’t even exist yet.

Encouragement for someone considering your field?

“How” you do your work is at least as important as your actual results. Having a firm foundation in your faith, ethics, and how you conduct yourself will set you up well to learn any hard skills that you’re interested in.

“I test beer throughout the fermentation process for microbes, test equipment for sanitation efficacy, and am in charge of propagating yeast strains for all the beers.”

What do you find rewarding about working in the STEM field?

I love science; being able to go to an awesome job every day using the education I pursued is a huge feeling of accomplishment. There are so many opportunities God presents in our lifetime. It’s special that we can choose a career field and work towards that goal. STEM is personally rewarding for me, as I know the quality control work I’m doing is important to the company and to consumers.

Did a teacher stand out?

I enjoyed Mr. Tracy’s classes, as he always had a passion for the subjects, and a fantastic sense of humor that I now understand.

Encouragement for someone considering your field?

If there is something you want to do, do it. Don’t be intimidated.

All the working adults in the world were in your shoes at one time, not so long ago. Don’t be afraid to utilize tech schools, not just because of the huge cost savings and transferable credits.

They have fantastic programs, and a lot of STEM areas have great opportunities for associate degrees. You can seamlessly continue your education to a bachelor’s degree in most cases if you desire.

Lastly, following a science career as a Christian is not easy. So much of what is taught goes against the Bible, and you need to have a conscious focus on your faith—it will be tested.

Bobbi Bishofberger (LL ‘)05 Chair of the Welding Program Blackhawk Technical College (BTC), Janesville, Wis. “I oversee every aspect of the program, teach, and develop new classes and programs in the areas of Welding, Robotics, and Fabrication. I also work with area schools and BTC to promote manufacturing and the trades to future generations. This includes STEM events, especially for women.”

How did you get interested in your current field?

I grew up building race cars with my family. It was amazing to see what we could build in our little garage. Welding was one of the areas where my family unit was lacking knowledge and skill, so I decided to learn more about it. I loved it and decided to pursue it after graduation from LLHS. What did you do after LL? I attended BTC and earned a certificate in Welding, then an Associate’s in Applied Science in Welding Technology from MATC. I still wanted to learn more and went to Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., for a B.S. in Welding Engineering Technology. I worked in the automotive industry, programming robotic welding equipment on assembly lines, traveling to plants to troubleshoot and fix problems with robots.

I was also involved with planning new assembly lines and robotic welding cells. After I was done traveling for a living, I started teaching evening welding courses at BTC. How did LL prepare you for further education?

Lakeside taught me how to learn and gave me an excellent foundation in math skills. When I started at BTC, it didn’t take long to realize I was better prepared than most of my classmates, including in reading comprehension and study skills.

Did any teacher stand out or motivate you?

Mr. Westphal, of course! He never made me feel like I did not belong in the shop classes. He held me to a higher level because he saw something in me. He was low-key and patient. Now that I teach, I know that teaching others is not as easy as it looks.

“Our department specializes in the development of new clinical tests that will be used to test for various hematological disorders (thrombocytopenia, hemophilia, etc).”

How did you get interested in your current field?

In grade school, I had a great science teacher that really loved chemistry and that rubbed off on me. Then at LLHS, when I heard about the human genome project, I knew that’s what I wanted to work on. Of course, the project finished in April 2003, a month before I graduated, but by that time, I had already decided I wanted to pursue the molecular biology field.

Exactly what is it that you do?

One project I helped develop was a Next-Generation Sequencing test that simultaneously sequences 117 different genes related to blood and bleeding disorders, looking for genetic variants that could help to explain the patient’s disorder. I was also involved in the reporting aspect, which required validation of a reporting software to track and maintain the variants from each case but also generate reports based on the test ordered and variants identified. Since the test launch in summer 2017, we’ve sequenced over 1,300 patients.

Did any teacher motivate you?

Mr. Hackbarth stood out to me. I knew I wanted to get through Calculus by my senior year, so sophomore year, I took two math courses to be able to take Calculus. Mr. Hackbarth made me love math. I had a great time with him, the course, my classmates, and the math team.

What do you find rewarding about working in the STEM field?

When I decided I wanted to do a PhD, one of the big reasons was that I loved doing research and I liked knowing that what I was doing may make a difference in people’s lives. When I did my post-doc at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, I did pre-clinical drug trials to treat Neurofibromatosis Type 1. My work helping people became even more apparent when I saw pre-clinical trials I worked on get turned into clinical trials to help people with the disease.

At Versiti, I know the tests I’ve helped develop help physicians and patients every day. I constantly get to learn new things and use new technology but at the same time, I’m able to take that and develop tests and assays that are going to help people with bleeding disorders.

Full-time Executive Director called Kirk DeNoyer has accepted the call to serve as Lakeside’s first full-time executive director.

While the principal is responsible for the educational side of Lakeside, the executive director will be responsible for the business side of Lakeside—all the programs and services that support the educational side. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, budget and finances, busing, maintenance, janitorial, hot lunch, publications, and development.

Principal Grasby and DeNoyer will work together to make sure that all current programs operate efficiently, and they will also analyze what changes may be needed at Lakeside to meet the future needs of students, families, and the federation.

“I will be overseeing and assisting with the work of our Director of Operations, Director of Development, Director of Communications, and Manager of Finance,” says DeNoyer. “It is my goal to get all of these areas of business operations to work together as efficiently and effectively as possible for the benefit of the entire Lakeside ministry.”

He is accountable to the principal, the Board of Regents, and the General Board as he establishes the overall vision and goals for the school’s business operations. Acting as the human resources manager, he will supervise

workplace performance of the directors and manage overall goals and performance of the directors and staff.

He will also reach out and further develop relationships and communication with federation congregations, promoting Christian education at Lakeside and answering questions pertaining to school’s business operations.

Meet Kirk DeNoyer

• Kirk is a 1986 graduate of Northwestern Prep and a 1991 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran College. That year he began serving at Wisconsin Lutheran High School, Milwaukee, as a math teacher and assistant football and basketball coach. In his 24-year career there, he taught math for 11 years, served as the Director of Enrollment for 12 years, and as Assistant Principal his final year. He also served as the head football coach for 20 years.

• In 2015, he accepted the call to serve at Lakeside as the Director of Activities. He was the freshman boys PE teacher and head boys basketball coach.

He and his wife, Karen, have four children: Emily, a PT in Fort; Andrew, an actuary in Milwaukee; Elise, Accounts Manager at Cloute, Inc. in Fort Atkinson; and Austin (‘16), attending Martin Luther College. They are members at St. Paul, Lake Mills.

Meet Todd Jahns

• Todd Jahns has accepted the call to be our new Activities Director and will be the varsity boys basketball head coach.

He served as the Instructor of Sport and Exercise Science at Wisconsin Lutheran College.

He also coached at Kettle Moraine Lutheran in Jackson for 19 years and led his team to a 2018 WIAA Division 3 state tournament berth.

Volunteering—

it’s a family affair

In 2018, Twice is Nice Retail in Jefferson celebrated its 25th year of operation. Since ‘93, the store has exceeded $7 million in revenue and given over $5 million to Lakeside Lutheran High School.

Operated by Good Stewards, Inc., the managing organization of the store, Twice is Nice gifts have made it more affordable for generations of students to benefit from Christian education.

“Store volunteers are always interested in hearing the numbers,” says Good Stewards board chairman Jim Buelow (‘64). “Seeing the register tape totals add up is a great motivator for many of our volunteers who keep coming back week after week, month after month. The shared mission is something we hold dear.”

In October 2018, volunteers celebrated 25 years in business with a catered dinner at the Lakeside campus. Later, as a token of appreciation for years of service and support, members of the Lakeside Board of Regents and administration gathered at the store to express thanks and present volunteers with a commemorative plaque for display in the store.

“The Lord has blessed Lakeside Lutheran in many ways during its 60-year history. Twice is Nice is one of those blessings,” says Principal James Grasby.

“The dedicated Christians at the store have made it their mission to support Lakeside’s ministry. The financial support to the school has significantly underwritten the cost of quality, Christ-centered education for thousands of our teenagers.”

Currently run by a group of about 125 volunteers, Twice is Nice is one of the few of its kind continuing as a 100 percent volunteer operation.

Marilyn Krause’s family. On Tuesday evenings, Peggy Cooper (‘76), Jayne Pfeifer (‘82), and Tammy Meinel (‘77), and John Schoenfeld (dad of four LL grads) gather to volunteer at Twice is Nice work nights. Why? “Because my mom makes me!” they laugh. “Just kidding. It’s awesome that we get to spend time together and catch up while helping students.”

Each have their own stand-out memories of Lakeside, but “the most valuable takeaway are lifelong friendships that we all have with classmates,” they agree.

While they appreciate getting to work together, they also enjoy meeting other people.

“The volunteers we work with are awesome, and we are guaranteed a few laughs!” they promise. “Come for an hour or stay for four, every little bit helps!”

Kendall Fields (‘17) and Emily Weber (‘18) were married on May 25, 2019. Kendall is currently in the Army and stationed at Fort Bragg, NC.

Cara McElroy (‘17) and Tyler Thress became engaged December 16, 2018, at the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison. They met through North Park University’s Chamber Choir, an audition-only ensemble.

Cara is studying Fine Arts; Tyler is a grad student specializing in conducting and vocal performance.

Justin Rue (‘17) and Hailey Stade (‘17) were engaged spring 2018, planning a June 2019 wedding. “I’m an elementary education major and Spanish minor [at MLC], and Justin is on the pastor track with a Spanish emphasis,” says Hailey. “We are moving to Spain in September to teach English and take Spanish classes!

We plan to return for MLC 2020 fall semester.

God is so awesome.”

Corey Paske (‘16) successfully asked Erin Wenzel (FVL ‘16) to marry him in Panama City, FL during their spring break. Then juniors at MLC, Corey and Erin were participating in the Daylight trip program helping with hurricane relief and experiencing ministry through the program.

Brandon Schilling (‘13) and Cassie Doering (‘14) became engaged December 22, 2018.

They are planning a wedding for June 27, 2020.

Ricky and Sarah (Bennett ‘11) Horton welcomed son Wyatt Nathaniel, born Nov. 4, 2018.

Tim Hodel (‘16) and Katelyn Richter (‘17) engaged to marry on October 19, 2018 and plan a wedding for this upcoming year.

Jake Marasch (‘15) and Hannah Varney (‘15) are excited to announce that they became engaged at Ellison Bluff State Natural Area in Door County, WI on September 28.

Justin Johnson (‘07) was named, 2018 Customer Service Employee of the Year by his employer, Wilderness Resort, where he is first assistant golf pro at Wild Rock Golf Club and also an accounting assistant

at the resort.

Johnson also serves as president of the Todd Johnson Memorial Fund, in honor of his late brother (‘96). Over 11 years, the Fund has raised $183K through golf outings for scholarships to LLHS and Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn. Justin and his wife live in Sauk City.

Wee Warriors Marcus and Mirabel, born November 12, 2018, join the Garrison family. (Sisters Gigi & Ellie are also future Warriors ‘33 & ‘35). Dr. Brenda (Lenser ‘02) owns Highland Dental in Fort Atkinson. James, once employed at LL, is currently the Director of Finance for Kingdom Workers.

Wayne Hasel Jr. (‘98) married Elizabeth Hoover on Oct. 13, 2018 at Red Circle Inn in Nashotah. Wayne is store director for Pick ’n Save in Brookfield and Liz is a Guest Service Leader for Kwik Trip in Lake Mills.

Dan (‘91) & Amanda Buss welcomed their first child, Eden Rose, August 21, 2018.

Dale Degner (‘79) passed away at his home. A private memorial service was held in Brookings, South Dakota.

Rebecca “Becky” (Madson ‘77) Lussky of La Crescent, Minn., passed away Dec. 16, 2018, at her home. Her funeral was held on Dec. 22, at St. Paul, Onalaska.

David L. Pieper (‘75) of Stoddard died Oct. 13, 2018, at the Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice in Viroqua.

His funeral was held at St. Matthew, Stoddard.

Kevin Tews (‘73) passed away April 17, 2019, at Rainbow Hospice in Johnson Creek.

Funeral was at St. Paul, Fort April 23.

Forever Warrior Karen (Melcher ‘72) Hafenstein and husband Larry celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Married Dec. 8, 1973, they were blessed with 3 children, all LL grads: Jason ‘93 (Rebecca), Jackie ‘95, and Kaycee ‘01 (Nathan ‘01) Welke, They have future Warrior granddaughters, Regan (class of ‘27) and Aria Welke (‘33).

Barbara (Korth ‘70) Lindner passed away Dec. 12, 2018.

Funeral services were held at St. Matthew, Janesville, on Dec. 19.

Karen (Roth ‘67) and Rich Hafenstein celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 31, 2018. Married at St. Peter in Helenville. 44 days after their marriage, Rich left for Vietnam with the 826th Ord out of Madison. When he returned 13 months later, they built their home in rural Johnson Creek and are still there today. Parents of Amy Olszewski and Megan Meier, proud grandparents of Cade (LL ‘18) and Ian (‘21) Olszewski and Harper and Marley Meier. Rich retired from Tyson Foods and Karen from Miller and Ansay Law Office in Jefferson.

John Stratman (‘13) finished his degree

in Interative Media Design at Moraine Park Technical College in May 2018 with an already impressive online presence, as his animated trailers generate quite a bit of attention on various YouTube channels and entertainment news sites.

Stratman was at Lakeside when he made his first animated short.“I’ve always been into visual storytelling,” he said. “My dream was to direct movies. It might still be.”

Stratman said he took the lead in a group project and suggested the animated project with the rest of the group doing the voices of the characters. After high school, Stratman began working at Lidtke Motors in Beaver Dam to save money for college. “I didn’t do much creative stuff until 2015,” Stratman said. “I saw the third trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’ I was so excited that I made a remake of that trailer.”

Stratman uploaded the video to YouTube and it took off pretty quickly. “It was the most-viewed thing that I have ever worked on,” Stratman said.

“After that, I did the first trailer for ‘Captain America: Civil War.’” Here’s what his college IMD instructor, Joseph Sibilski, had to say about John being featured in a Huffington Post article: “John is an amazing and hardworking animator who invented his job doing eight bit online trailers, like the one featured in the Huff Post article. He works remotely with various producers, and many of his spots have been picked up by Marvel, DC, and the SYFY channel. It is great to see his work featured on a national news site!”

Check out John’s channel at youtube.com/user/MotionFictionTV Scott Schneider (‘84) is enjoying the next generation of Warrior baseball success! A varsity baseball player while at Lakeside, in his senior year the Warriors captured the ESC trophy and finished with a 7-2 conference record.

In 2019, he is enjoying late-season success again for the Warrior baseball team while he watches his sons, Carter (‘20) and Brock (‘22). To print, the Warriors captured the WIAA Division 3 Regional title this spring with a 15–3 win over secondseeded Orfordville Parkview on the road May 28.

Marsha M. Hopmann (‘64) of Lake Mills died December 5, 2018 at Rainbow Hospice Center in Johnson Creek.

Her funeral was held at St. Paul, Lake Mills.

Carter brought more smiles for Dad with a productive game in the final, going 2 for 4 with 2 singles and a walk, scoring all 3 times he got on base. Warriors continue in sectional play v. Markesan on June 4.
