The Lakeside Lutheran Warriors won the first volleyball state championship in school history at the WIAA State Tournament at the Resch Center in Green Bay on November 2–4, 2017.

Twenty years ago, I was blessed to participate in a number of sports while attending Lakeside. Although, when I look back, it’s not the awards or team records I remember. It’s the hands folded with teammates before competition, the devotions that stayed with me far after the match had concluded, and the multiple times my coaches would tell me they were praying for me.

After witnessing the example of so many God-fearing coaches, I now have the opportunity to continue that as a coach at our Lakeside Lutheran. Only this time, I get to witness the students praying before and after every match, giving Christian encouragement through victory and defeat, and reminding each other that they play first for their Savior.

Here at LLHS, we have a different purpose in athletics that far exceeds a win-loss record.

The athletes strive to use their gifts to glorify their Savior. We are also reminded that each of us—whether a coach, athlete, manager or fan—are commissioned to “go and make disciples of all nations.” We have the wonderful opportunity to not only minister to each other through the platform of athletics, but to be that witness to every opponent, ref and school we come into contact with. It was an exciting year to win a State Championship in volleyball. What was even better than that gold ball was the team telling the reporters afterwards that, while this victory sure was great, we have an even greater victory that has already been won for us!

Lakeside Lutheran High School hosts another “GRAND EVENT” on Saturday, April 7. In our 7th year, this social/auction/ dinner fund-raiser for student assistance and other needs is a sell-out campus event that involves dozens of student volunteers and adults. Last year the 300+ guests in attendance helped us raise a new high of over $100K for our ministry.

Jared joined the faculty at Trinity-St. Luke, Watertown in 2016.

On Nov. 10, 1967, 100 students participated in the first WELS Choral Fest at Luther High School in Onalaska.

50 years later to the day, almost 450 choir members from 21 WELS high schools gathered for the 50th anniversary concert.

A pops concert was held Friday and the sacred concert on Sunday, November 10, 2017, with a 50-piece orchestra and 300 Choral Fest alumni joining the students.

Heath is a District Sales Manager for Sanofi Pharmaceuticals. Rachel has spent the past eight years raising their children Eve, 8, and Dylan, 6. Before that, she was a District Manager for ALDI Inc.

LLHS Principal Jim Grasby, for the sixth time in Choral Fest history, was one of the clinicians. “In the decades I’ve been associated with Choral Festival, I witness singers from different schools form lifelong bonds of friendship. After all, they realize that they shared a common faith in Jesus of which they sing,” he says. “ [Even] among students from the same school... friendships transcended peer groups, other school activities, or even life plans.

They realized that they were truly one in mission by sharing the gospel in song.

Sometimes, these friendships even resulted in marriage.”

‘08-09 and married in 2014. They attended the 2008 East Regional Fest at Illinois Lutheran and have fond memories of Swing Choir going to state WSMA. “It was always fun when Swing went out with Jazz (which we were also in) to area grade schools to promote the music program,” Kiara shares. “Singing and music-making at Lakeside really was what brought us together, and music remains a strong tie that binds us.”

This past summer they moved from Milwaukee to New Ulm so Benjamin can certify in staff ministry at MLC. Kiara is a board-certified music therapist, working at an assisted living facility, with a dementiafriendly choir and in her own practice.

who became partners for life when they married in 2003. “We loved spending time together in a school activity and loved learning the dances (and trying not to have too much fun and mess up!)”

Jess shares. As for memorable moments, “We both remember when we missed an evening performance when the vehicle we were driving was rear-ended at 45 mph!”

The Rupnows and their two daughters live in Oconomowoc. Kurt works in the insurance industry while Jess teaches middle grades Computer Applications in the Oconomowoc school district.

1968 NCF Choral Fest has been hosted at your Lakeside Lutheran several times, including the second national festival in 1968 that involved nine high schools, another national fest in 1978 that featured 13 schools, an East Regional Fest in 1998 with 12 schools, and most recently, the 2013 National Choral Fest for 400+ singers from 21 schools.

On Sept. 30, Mr. Jim Bauer was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Hall of Fame in the “High School Coach” category.

gave his all. He pushed me to reach those limits for the good of our team, the school, and to give glory to the one from which we received those gifts,” he says.

A 1973 DMLC graduate, he compiled a 274-143 record in 18 years at Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School, New Ulm, before moving to Lake Mills in 1999, where he coached for 17 years at Lakeside.

His teams won seven conference titles, three regional titles, and one sectional title. In 2011, they reached the WIAA Division 3 state semifinals.

As a football and track coach, he tries to mirror Bauer’s passion. “I always admired the time and intensity he put into it. He was dedicated to his ministry and his players. This passion is what I have tried to instill into my coaches, players, and carry throughout my personal ministry.”

His record at LLHS is 271-125, making his combined varsity record 545-268. During his 44 years coaching, he was a three-sport coach for 37 years; he ran summer camps dozens of those years as well.

One of Bauer’s athletes in Minnesota, Gregg currently teaches 4th grade at Trinity–St. Luke’s in Watertown, where he coaches girls basketball for the school team as well as being involved in the Lakeside Junior Warrior program. He is also a Lakeside football coach.

With this Bauerism ringing in their ears, “Never, ever, underestimate what young people today can accomplish when they energize all their efforts unselfishly in the same direction toward a common goal,” many of his former athletes have become coaches, and are eager to commemorate Coach Bauer:

Now a teacher at Winnebago Lutheran Academy in Fond du Lac, Jaeger shares what lessons he learned from Lakeside athletics. “Coach Bauer always reminded me as an athlete that I had more to give. He understood the limits of his athletes, their potential, and what could be accomplished if each individual

For Jared, sports lessons from Jim translated into life. “He taught us first and foremost how to be Christian young men, and to serve the Lord faithfully in whatever we do. He taught us sportsmanship and respect for opponents—to look the other team in the eye and shake their hands,” he says. “He taught us the importance of hard work and effort, and how that plays a key role in improvement. He got us to give more than we thought we could.”

“Jim taught us how to work hard and play hard no matter what the scoreboard read,” he says. “If you are down by 20, you give maximum effort even if the reality is that you are not going to win. If you are ahead by 20, you continue to give maximum effort, not to bury your opponent, but to respect yourself and the game. We also learned how to practice at a high pace to get the most out of every practice.

“I try to emulate that as I coach. How much can we get done today? How can we practice at a pace that gets the most out of every minute? How can we practice so it flows into the game? The team was always more important than ‘I’. But the most important thing Jim taught us was how to play as young Christian gentlemen. Respect yourself, your teammates, and your opponents.

Those are lessons that go beyond the basketball court.”

Now as a cross country, track, and basketball coach, he mimics that. “I don’t want anybody working harder than we do. I look for maximum effort in every practice and game. I want our athletes to look at each day as an opportunity to get better,” he says. “I also find myself saying many of the same things he used to say, such as ‘SNATCH IT!’ or ‘WILL YOU REBOUND?!’”

Mike Ehlers (LL ‘04)

Mike represents many of Jim’s former athletes who apply their sports experiences to the workplace and life in general. Mike is Vice President of Operations at mkCellular, a technology agency that’s been in business for 21 years, now with eight locations in southern Wisconsin, and he spends time doing his own kind of coaching in the workplace. A guiding principle he took away from sports under Bauer is to “be passionate about what you are doing,” he shares. The passion Jim Bauer had for basketball and for the success of each member on the team helps make for a successful workplace.”

believed strongly in Christian education. Omar was one of the founders of your Lakeside Lutheran, and Georgianne served as an officer for Ladies Guild and was an active volunteer at Twice is Nice, the all-volunteer resale store in Jefferson that benefits LLHS.

“When my father got involved in starting Lakeside, it was because he felt it was so important to provide Christian secondary education for students not planning on becoming pastors or teachers. After all, someone has to have different jobs to pay all the expenses involved with running a great high school like Lakeside. He passed that importance to our family,” Gail says.

Second generation Michelle shares: “Having parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings who all graduated from LL, you would think that I would be subject to a lot of comparisons, but I don’t think that was the case. If someone recognized me because of my family, it was always a positive experience for me. I never felt like I was in someone’s shadow or needed to be anyone other than who I was.

All eleven of their children are forever Warriors: Judy ‘64, Kathy ‘65, Don ‘66, Mark ‘67, Steve ‘70, Rick ‘72, Gail ‘73, Mike ‘76, Al ‘78, John ‘82, and Emily ‘88. Since then, 28 of their 36 grandchildren have graduated from LLHS—and there are currently four greatgrandWarriors! Within that incredible Lakeside heritage, there are three families where the third generation is currently enrolled, so—of course—we had to ask a few questions:

“Growing up, I don’t think I fully appreciated the uniqueness of our family’s Lakeside heritage. I knew I would go to LL and didn’t really consider attending any other high school. I probably took my education for granted at the time. I liked going to school with my cousins and seeing family names in the awards cases, but didn’t think about the efforts that my grandparents and parents made to ensure that we had a Christian secondary education. Ella knows how very blessed she is to be a part of the Lakeside family and I’m proud that she is able to continue our own family’s tradition by attending the school her great-grandpa helped found.”

Third gen Ella thinks “it’s cool going to the same school that my mom and grandparents went to because it’s neat thinking about how they walked through some of the same halls that I walk through each day,” she says. “I also get to picture how my grandparents met because my grandma has told me that story—the where and when and how.

“I know my mom and my grandparents wouldn’t be the same today without the guidance that Lakeside’s pastors and teachers gave them throughout their high school years. I am very grateful that my grandparents chose to send my mom to Lakeside and that she and my dad gave me the blessing of going here too.”

Carter thinks it’s fun being part of a three-generation family and getting to hear “about all the teachers and coaches that my parents had that I have now.” Especially the “funny stories they would tell me about Señor and Mr. Johnson.”

Dominic “Doc” Schmidt is the fourth of Steve’s children to attend LL: “I find it really awesome that I can say I am third generation.

My grandma was a member—so I’m told—of the first class [in our current building],” says Doc. “So many family members have been here! My parents alone—when all of my siblings are through high school—will have had kids in Lakeside for 21 consecutive years.”

Gail sees that the size of the school and campus is so much bigger than when she attended in the 70s—and tuition has increased too. “However,” she says, “teachers and staff still care about shaping young adults and saving souls (& the floors still shine too)!”

“There’s a feeling you get, probably the work of the Holy Spirit moving a person to do this work. The hymn God’s Word is Our Great Heritage sums it up. We sang it at my mom’s funeral. My parents instilled this in all of us, and we’re so thankful they did. Over the years we’ve had good times and some very bad times. Through it all, we maintain that God is in charge. That’s a blessing! His grace, our faith.”

He doesn’t mind being asked about the family connections either. “One time Mr. Walta (LL ‘71) had to come to our homeroom. He saw me and said I must be a Buchta because I look like my dad,” says Carter. “Then he asked if I played sports because he remembered my dad was good at them.

He also said he was friends with my grandpa in high school.”

But he’s making Lakeside his own, too. “Over the past three years I’ve made a ton of new friends through sports and in all the different classes I took. Every day is always fun—even if you get piled with homework,” he says.

Two alum who are, according to Sydney Cody (‘15), “very proud to have run for Lakeside” represented MLC and BLC at the UMAC cross country championships this fall. (with Ben Tweit ‘17) On Sept. 9, Bethany Lutheran and Wisconsin Lutheran Colleges faced each other in soccer and five LLHS grads took the field: Briana Modjeska (’14), Olivia Scheiber (’14), Mindy Meske (’17), Nora Stake (’16), and Kiana Krszjzaniek (’15).

Adam Wagner (‘13) graduated from the Rutgers Professional Golf Turf Management School. He worked at Erin Hills for the U.S. Open, managing moisture content on the putting surfaces in order to “maintain [the] health and playability of the greens for the game’s best players.”

On July 1, Kayla (Christianson ‘12) married John CordallGonzales at St. Matthew, Janesville. Kayla, a 5th grade teacher at Community Elementary, Edgerton, is pursuing a Masters in Education. John served in the U.S. Army from 2010-17, and is now in the Army National Guard. He works at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison.

On September 2, Jacob Schneider (‘12) married Lydia Bushey at St. Lorenz Lutheran, Frankenmuth, MI. They settled in Oconomowoc, where Lydia is a full-time RN at ProHealth Hospital. Jacob is a full-time Loan Officer at the State Bank of Reeseville/ Watertown.

Katelyn (Gentz ‘12) and Ryan Broedlow were married on August 20, 2016, at St. Paul, Ixonia, and now live in Portland, WI. Katelyn works for Jefferson County as an Administrative Assistant in the UW-Extension Office and Ryan is an accountant for Baker Tilly Virchow Krause.

Craig Wilke (’11) married Christina Biedenbender on July 14, in New Ulm, MN. After the wedding, they moved to Austin, TX, were Craig serves as vicar at Holy Word.

Jessica Eternick (’11) graduated from MLC in May 2016 and received a call to teach 2-4 grade at Mt. Calvary, Redding, CA. On July 1, 2016, she married Jacob Rothe.

Caitlin (Moyle ’10) and Cole Kraft were joined in marriage on June 10. Caitlin is a nurse in Waukesha and will graduate with her masters in spring to become a nurse midwife and women’s health nurse practitioner.

Brittany (Leis ’09) married Matt Dixon on July 22, 2017, at St. Paul’s, Ixonia.

They met at MSOE, where she graduated with a degree in Architectural Engineering.

She spent the past 4 years working in Chicago for RTM & Associates as a Building Mechanical Systems Engineer.

They relocated to Seattle, WA, where Matt works as a software engineer and she works from home for the same Chicago-based company.

Lindsay (Johnson ’09) and Benjamin (’09) Miller were joined in marriage Oct. 30, 2016, at a small ceremony in Walt Disney World, Orlando. They held a

reception in spring 2017 to celebrate with family and friends. They are pictured with their daughter, Addison.

Andrew (‘07) and Heather (Burgus ‘05) Schoenfeld were married on Dec. 31, 2016 and live in Madison. Andrew teaches 5-6th grade at Holy Cross and Heather is a Certified Child Life Specialist at the American Family Children’s Hospital.

Keith Peterson (’05) and his wife, Monica, celebrated their 9th anniversary on Aug. 30, 2017. They live in Minnesota where Keith works as a Social Worker for Mahnomen County Social Services. He is on the Board of Directors of the Center of Human Environment on the White Earth Indian

Reservation. Additionally, Keith was elected President to the Layman’s Organization of the 8th Circuit of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod in Northwestern Minnesota and President of Immanuel, ELS, in Audubon, MN. Support Forever Warrior Beth (Zimmerman ’05) Steiber & her family! See page 11 for an opportunity to attend a fundraiser in Watertown, WI to help the family recover financially from the costs of Beth’s accident this past summer.

Mike Ehlers (‘04),VP of Operations at mkCellular, spoke with the LL Voc Eng class. Mike shared hints on how to be successful in the workplace and gave valuable tips for filling out job applications. He followed up

with mock interviews with students who came dressed for the occasion and were prepared for the interview.

Students were then given feedback in their interviewing skills. (See back cover for another LL connection!)

Julie (Taylor ’01) and Heath Moyer were married on July 11, 2015. They live in Lake Mills, where they are raising her daughter, Lydia.

They both work in Madison, Heath for Certco and Julie for SSM Health—Dean Medical Group in Medical Records as a Scanning Quality Assurance Specialist.

Sarah (Garde) and Kevin Pontel (both ‘97) connected through Facebook in 2012, while Sarah was in breast cancer treatment (she’s now 5 years cancerfree!). They married in June 2016. Kevin has two children (Austin & Eliana) from a previous marriage and Sarah has a daughter (Vivian). They are members at St. Paul, Fort Atkinson.

Lori (Sauer ‘94) Ernest reports: “My husband, David, accepted a call at St. Paul, Fort Atkinson, to be the associate pastor. This summer we moved our four kids, cat, hedgehog, and saltwater fish from Tinley Park, IL to our new home in Fort. I am enjoying being back home close to where I grew up in Lake Mills.”

Troy and Charlene (’84) Hinstorff are keeping busy with weddings! On, Sept. 2, 2017, Brooke (‘11) married Aaron Voight (’11), son of Mike (‘76) and Holly Voight (‘83). On May 5, 2018, Jae (’12) will marry Madison Zwink of Edmonds, WA. Then, Kyle (‘09), will marry Jaclyn Bretoi, of Austin, TX, on May 11, 2019.

Tina (Nell ‘83) Ulrich is now teaching at St John, Jefferson.

She directs the Grace Notes Jr Choir and plays organ for church. Daughter Lydia (‘16) is a sophomore at UW– Stevens Point and runs track.

Timothy Wiedmann (‘75) is a Professor at the University of Minnesota, Dept. of Pharmaceutics

specializing in inhalation drug delivery. He and his wife, Yen-Lane Chen, a Senior Research Fellow at Boston Scientific, have been married for over 30 years. His family traveled to Taiwan for his nephew’s wedding.

John Luedtke (’72), of Luedtke Plumbing, visited the LL Vocational English class to share info about plumbing and other skilled trades.

He emphasized the need for tradespeople, shared the income potential, and reminded them that because schooling is built into an apprenticeship, students are paid to learn.

Carol (Yerges ’65) and Phil Barnett celebrated their 50th anniversary in August—in Hawaii! The 18-day, fourisland trip “completed my bucket list of visiting all 50 states!”

Jane (Sorensen ‘64) Colyer passed away Sept. 28, 2016; the funeral was held Oct. 4 at St. Peter, Lodi, CA. Gary (‘62) and Judy (Lang ‘64) Lembrich celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 19. They were married at St. John, Jefferson, and have three children and six grandchildren.

Dianne (Yerges ’63) Wendorf passed away suddenly on May 27 at her home. The funeral was June 1, at Good Shepherd, Beaver Dam.
