The Lakeside Lutheran Link, 2017 Issue 1 mission Motivated by the love of Jesus, Lakeside Lutheran High School partners with families to educate, encourage, and equip students for life and for eternity. about our federation Spring 2017 was the fourth year that Pastors Toepel and Schultz were co-directors of the LLHS drama department, producing the western comedy Is There a Doctor in the House? Señor and PC give all glory to the Savior as they try to imitate him through their lives of service in ministry at your LLHS.

A Life of Service...the Bible tells us that our Lord and Savior came into the world to

serve and not to be served. The Apostle Paul encourages us in his letter to the Phillipians that in our relationships with one another we should have the same mindset as Jesus Christ.

To have the same mindset as our Savior means that we, like him, are to place the needs of others ahead of ourselves. That we are to imitate our Savior by living a life of service.

At Lakeside Lutheran, we don't just encourage our students to be servants, we also provide opportunities for them to show their Christian love through acts of service.

Organizations like Teens For Christ, National Honor Society, FFA and Student Council offer many opportunities throughout the year for students to get involved with some kind of volunteer work.

In addition to these opportunities, religion classes, bands, choirs and even sewing classes offer their students a chance to lend a helping hand. And our recruitment director, Mr. Lauber, uses many students on a regular basis for all the activities he hosts every year.

During any school year, there are over 60 opportunities for any student to volunteer time, talents or money. Giving our students an opportunity to imitate our Savior's example is and will be always a priority at your Lakeside Lutheran.

The stars were out at Grand Event 2017

With the theme for the evening based on Philippians 2:15, guests at the 6th annual fundraiser social, dinner and auction saw stars all night, and became part of an effort that shot the night into the heavens with its success.

Each year, in the early planning stages, the committee chairpeople establish a goal and decide where to direct the proceeds from GE. We honestly had no idea this year would be a success beyond imagination. YOU provided for a new bus, student assistance, FACS kitchen labs, Operation GO, drama, athletics, STEM Club, the building and general operating funds! In addition to the presence and/or work of over 70 LL alums (from the class of 1963 all the way to 2014) an out-of-this-world team effort by parents, grandparents, pastors, principals, faculty, staff, students, friends, family, and even some with no connection, brought $108,000 in net proceeds to YOUR Lakeside Lutheran High School and TEAM JESUS!

The LLHS Grand Event is like a mini-reunion for many alum. More than 60 were guests for the evening, supporting their alma mater through bids and gifts. Dirty Jobs Guy

Almost everyone connected to Lakeside Lutheran knows this face, but which version is most familiar to you likely speaks to when you spent the most time on campus. As a student at LLHS in the late sixties, Leon Jaeger ('70) spent some time learning aspects of his future trade in the student-formed Power Mechanics Club, but if his hands were dirty at school, it was most likely after a hard-fought football game. Fast forward to 2003, after years spent running his own electrical business, when he returned to his alma mater as an employee whose job was to get his hands dirty pretty much all day long, but without the football.

In the past 14 years, Leon has done virtually all the dirty jobs Lakeside could dish out and more: maintenance man, Director of Building and Grounds, committee member, HVAC programmer, bus driver, master electrician, plumber, welder and carpenter. Now, he’s hanging up his jack-of-all-trades title to enjoy retirement.

While some things about Lakeside haven’t changed, many have.

“When I started, I think there were two laptops floating around school,” he says. “Now every teacher has a laptop, and all the students have a Chromebook.” He’s been here through almost a complete overhaul of the grounds: a practice soccer/football field, a paved eight-lane track and track storage facility, a press box, new bleachers, ticket booth; four softball and baseball dugouts, two batting cages, moving the old press box to the baseball field, installing three new outdoor scoreboards, new sound systems for the press boxes, and a complete new high voltage power grid serving our facility.

Though he doesn’t have as much contact with the students as teachers do, he knows them well. “Some kids seem happy, some seem sad. Some are funny, some serious.

Some kids are hard workers, some are not. Each kid is unique in his or her own way,” he says.

If it has a motor, wheels or wires, or tends to get dirty on a regular basis, it probably has a dozen years of Leon's fingerprints on it. He treasured the days when he could find a familiar smile, such as on his granddaughter's face during an elementary field trip to LL.

He fondly remembers the time he noticed a girl crying by her locker. “I asked her what was wrong. Naturally, she, several times, said ‘nothing.’

Finally, after some hesitation, she told me that her best friend went out with her boyfriend,” he said. “I smiled at her and said, ‘What’s the problem? She just helped you be done with someone who’s not good enough for you!’ After some silence, she returned the smile and said, ‘Thank you!’”

Leon also finds the humor in what might not be funny to everyone, he admits. “I think it is funny when a bus driver gets up in the morning, drives out to the bus, starts it up, waits for the kids to drive up to board the bus, and then finally figures out there is no school today,” he says with his classic wide Leon smile.

Fit for Life, In His Service for Life

‌joined the faculty in 1999. As the girls' PhyEd teacher, she has taught every female Gayle Bauer‌freshman who walked through the doors since then. This gives her a special insight into the students. “Every class has its own personality. Each one has been fun in one way or another. The class of 2002 was a super fun group of girls. I coached many of them in volleyball and basketball and they brought a lot of competitiveness to class,” she says. Still, she enjoys working with all the girls, not only the athletes. “Our differing freshmen PE units put kids on a more equal playing field, and I think that makes it more fun for all of them.”

One of her favorite memories touched both her personal and professional lives. She was assistant basketball coach in 2001 when the girls won State—her daughter Bethany ('01) was on that team.

“Being part of our first ever WIAA State Championship team was an awesome experience. The journey through regions & sectionals was beyond description on the excitement scale as the level of play upped itself at each level," she recalls. “Winning that State game & hugging the players—especially my senior daughter—was an emotional high.

But the greatest moment came in the locker room after the game when Coach Matthies ended with the singing of a hymn, praising God and giving him the glory. I will never forget how Coach Matthies always kept the girls grounded.”

She’s seen her share of changes over 18 years. She has coached basketball and volleyball, and has taught almost every life sport imaginable in Fit for Life, a course that exposes students to dozens of activities to help them stay healthy long past their high school years. You don’t see as many students involved in three seasons or participating in cross extracurriculars like in earlier years,” she says. But some things haven’t changed. “I think most students are the same in their care and concern for fellow classmates, their love for Christ, and their willingness to positively represent Lakeside in their home communities.”

While she’s looking forward to retirement, saying goodbye isn’t easy. “I will miss the interaction with the kids, especially in the hallways and in Fit 4 Life class.

It’s the greetings in the hall or the conversations before and after class about their accomplishments outside of the classroom that put the heart and soul in teaching,” she shares. She’ll also miss “the early morning chats in Mrs. T’s room, burning the midnight oil in the 600 hallway with Tim Matthies and Jim Bauer every night, and the many friendships I have made with other faculty members.”

For retirement, “I look forward to being able to Gayle and art teacher Lori Tetzlaff had be the boss of my own calendar and schedule,” fun with Twins Day during HoCo 2016 she says. With five children and 17 grandchildren, however, there may not be much free time. “I am hoping to do some traveling and of course be free to attend the many activities of our grandchildren. A few suggestions have come my way via my children as to ways I can fill my time, and I’m sure I will take them up on a few opportunities to be of service to them and their ministries,” she says. It would appear that along with being Fit for Life, Gayle Bauer subscribes to the philosophy of “Service for Life.” What a great legacy to leave.

Though Leon looks forward to spending more time with his wife, children and grandchildren, he says he will miss “the kids, my co-workers, the morning commutes with Louie as we took on all the problems of the world, and—most of all—the Christian environment of this place.”

Serving Around the World—from Home

No Waiting for Service

Eric Duwe ('03) is making a global impact, mainly from the comfort of his home.

Jordan Gaal ('14) makes camp in the field of serving others

After Lakeside, Eric attended UW–Eau Claire and double majored in Latin American Studies and Political Science. Studying abroad in Costa Rica “is where I got the travel bug,” he says. After graduating in 2007, he worked with Kingdom Workers in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for two years, then returned from 2010–13 to earn his master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Payap University, the first private university in Thailand.

Duwe returned to the U.S. and worked as an ESL instructor at UW– Milwaukee, but this past January he learned that Wisconsin Lutheran High School, Milwaukee, was looking for a Director of International Student Program. He knew the job would be the perfect blend.

“It combines three areas I love to be a part of: working in a crosscultural setting, working in education, and working in a place that has ministry at its core.”

The position also bring unique challenges. “Taking care of students can be challenging anywhere, but when you add that these international students are living in a different country without their home support systems, it can be even more so to communicate student issues with their families, many of whom don’t speak English.”

The job also has its worldly benefits—traveling to new places to recruit students and learning about other places and cultures. But the spiritual benefit is his favorite. “It’s a blessing to see students grow in knowledge and understanding of their Savior, and for some, to be baptized!” he says.

“I’m so glad that Wisco sees the value of having international students as part of the learning community at the school,” he says. “It’s good for these international students to be introduced to new opportunities and perspectives and, most importantly, to be in an environment where God’s love abounds through his Word being taught daily and being among Christian teachers and peers.” But it’s not only the international students who benefit, Duwe adds. “It’s also a big blessing for the domestic students and staff to have their perspectives broadened by the presence of international students!”

Whether being an advocate for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities or for those in rural and underserved populations, Jordan Gaal is living a life of service.

John (’08) and Katie (Schommer '08) Cleven, also serve at Wisconsin Lutheran High School, as houseparents for the International Program. John works full-time as a manager at Barnes and Noble and enjoys strumming his guitar and playing video games.

Katie, who loves to run, bike and swim, works as a therapist while also finishing up her doctoral program in clinical psychology.

When they heard about the opportunity to become house parents, they quickly signed up.

“We both enjoy working with kids,” says Katie. “Additionally, we were excited to learn about another culture, while sharing our own culture and faith with others.”

They quickly learned that “forming amazing relationships with the boys,” is the greatest joy, says Katie.

“John shares a love of video games with the boys so everyone— houseparents included—get involved in game nights a few times each semester.” And—like all parenting—the greatest challenge is “anytime we have to hand out a punishment.”

They see the spiritual blessing of being houseparents too, and they take seriously the encouragement from 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to pray continuously. “Being with the teens has really changed and improved our prayer life,” Katie says.

“Because we are a big part of both their earthly and spiritual life, we try to be guided by God in all of the decisions we make for the boys and with them. Instead of praying just in times of trouble or joy, we are truly praying continuously."

Jordan has served as a counselor at Camp BASIC (Brothers and Sisters in Christ) since 2011. For two weeks in June, this camp offers an opportunity for those with developmental disabilities to experience a week-long Bible camp. Last year, he was asked to serve on the Board of Directors.

“On the board, I assist in making decisions for the camp including financial decisions, camp activities and helping to coordinate registrations and plans,” he says. “Working with individuals who have intellectual and developmental disabilities is extremely rewarding because I can see their faith grow and shine throughout the week at camp. The individuals I have had the pleasure to meet are some of the most genuine people I know.”

As a student at UW–Madison, Gaal also served as an advocate, but this time for quality health care, especially for those in rural or underserved populations. As part of his 2016 summer internship in Washington, D.C., for the Wisconsin Area Health Education Centers (AHEC), he met with legislators. “We visited the offices of Senators Johnson and Baldwin as well as Representatives Grothman, Ribble, Moore, Kind, Pocan and Speaker Ryan to talk about our program, how it benefits Wisconsin and why it should continue to be funded,” he says.

This school year, he continued serving as as Wisconsin AHEC’s statewide communications assistant.

This summer he will serve as a communications intern for Post Consumer Brands, to help prepare him for a career in communications and marketing in food or agriculture. With his college graduation set for 2018, Jordan sees the role his high school education played in preparing him.

“Lakeside Lutheran High School prepared me to share my faith with a diverse number of individuals, at both Camp BASIC and UW–Madison,” he shares. “My education has given the knowledge and resources to tell others about Christ, but more importantly has taught me to always grow my own faith and continue learning.”

Jordan serves as an undergrad director on the National Board of Directors for Alpha Gamma Rho, the Ag, Food, Fiber & Life Science fraternity (pictured at an AGR event above).

This coming year he will also serve as the 24th Chair of the Student Services Finance Committee, working with 14 other UW–Madison students to allocate $50 million in student fees for programs, organizations and services for the university.

Cody Lauersdorf ('16) and Cole Lauersdorf ('19) were recently recognized at the Hartland Chamber of Commerce as recipients of its 2016 Kudos Awards.

The award celebrates future young professionals who "display excellent leadership potential that represents positive attributes of volunteerism contributing to the enrichment of the community." Cody is employed at Advanced Disposal.

Robbie Jarnigo ('16), owner of Versatile Angling Guide Services, is a co-host with renowned fishing guide Lee Tauchen on a new web-based fishing show, todaysangler.com. The site says their "goal is not only to entertain, but to really teach the how, what, and whys" of Midwest fishing. UWM film student Andrew Natvig ('14) documents and edits the action-packed videos posted on the site. Check it out!

Mom Lisa VandenHuevel reports on 2013 alum Stuart: "Stu will walk with his 2017 classmates at the University of Sioux Falls in SD May 21 with a double major in Business Admin & Entrepreneurial Studies. He plans to return in fall for a masters in Business and to punt for the Cougars one more season. He's been their starting punter for three years (redshirted freshman).

God has blessed his years at USF with humble Christian coaches. We are confident the friendships he has made will last a lifetime as have those with his LL buddies."

Kyle Stelse ('11) married Kimberly Pufahl at St. John in Jefferson on October 22, 2016. The newlyweds live in Pewaukee.

Emily (Erdmann '08) and Andrew Schmidt ('08) share: "We welcomed our son, Callen John, on April 3, 2017. We love watching him grow and change daily! He is such a blessing to us. We also just celebrated our 2-year wedding anniversary!"

Rachel (Mattke '07) Ver Velde writes: "I was named Chief of Staff to Congressman Glenn Grothman (WI-06) in February 2017. It is an honor to work for my hometown congressional district. My husband, Brandon, and I moved to Washington, D.C. in January 2015. We are enjoying exploring the area, making new friends and growing in our careers."

Tim and Jessica (Brunk '05) Sadler have been married for 7 years and have 2 children, Vanessa, 6, and Trevor, 3.

She has worked almost 5 years as a Medical/ Administrative Assistant at John Deere in Horicon.

The family lives in Juneau.

Justin Martin ('05) is an Army veteran, currently working as a full-time firefighter with the Franklin Fire Department in Franklin, Louisiana. He married Grace (Peltier) Martin of Franklin on December 2, 2016. She is a full-time paramedic with Arcadian Ambulance Service for the state of Louisiana.

Devan Hartwig ('00) proposed to Shannon Paulowske on the roof of Lambeau Field, and they plan for an October 2017 wedding. Devan is a driver for Okauchee Redi-Mix. Dan (’91) and Amanda Buss were married on November 19, 2016 in Milwaukee. They now live in Germantown.

Lori (Koeppel '80) Draeger ran her first Boston Marathon in April 2017.

Draeger ran in long distance events while attending LL and within the last decade, picked up competitive running again. Among 400 runners from Wisconsin, she finished the race in 4:22:55!

A nice write-up appeared in the Watertown Daily Times at bit.ly/2pKQd3v Nancy (Brunk '69) Koebler of Johnson Creek went to her eternal home on April 10, 2017 at UW Hospital in Madison, surrounded by her family. Her memorial service was April 18 in Jefferson.

As Mrs. Bauer retires this year (see p. 4), one of her favorite memories is from 2001—the year the girls basketball team won the state championship. Katie Huebner ('02) was on that team and remembers it well: “My favorite memory from that team was actually a very quiet moment we shared at the Kohl Center. We arrived well in advance of our scheduled game and the area was empty except for a few workers. We were able to go out and circle up around center court. We had a little chat led by our captains, and then we had a prayer as a team,” she shares. “Being able to pray together on the court in that setting with peace and quiet just made it feel like it was our house. It felt so reassuring and I remember feeling confident after that and thinking how awesome it was that we just had a moment for just the team and our Savior in the middle of the Kohl Center.”

Where is she now?

Katie graduated from WLC in '06 with a degree in communication and coaching and went to work. She returned to school and graduated from MLC in 2012.

She spent a year teaching English outreach classes for a WELS mission in Tirana, Albania, another teaching English at S.A.L.E.M. Immanuel Lutheran College in Tai Po, Hong Kong and also taught four years at Saint Lucas, Milwaukee. This summer, she's moving to Plymouth, Minn., to teach in the English department and coach volleyball and basketball at West Lutheran High School.
