about our federation Fall 2016 marked 10 years of guys’ soccer at Lakeside, and the program celebrated with an alumni mixer game and social on a gorgeous Friday night in August. Like a page out of a Dickens novel, it's a journey to the past, present, and future.

Travel back with me over 10 years ago (and almost 20 lbs ago for me) to when LL soccer began. Students and families rented the Sun Prairie Athletic Center to play Saturday pick-up games. As interest and funding grew, it became an actual program. There were challenges, but with challenges comes opportunity, and where there's opportunity, there is our gracious God, blessing us through highs and lows. One challenge was to raise the funds to support the program. Pioneering parents paid for goals and equipment, uniforms (still used by JV!), officials and transportation. Yes, even some of the original soccer balls are still rolling around on the pitch. We keep these clunkers around partially to annoy assistant coaches (who keep asking why we still have them) and also as a bit of nostalgia to remember our past, help us appreciate our present, and guide our future plans, focused on God’s grace.

Forward to the present: the soccer team has been blessed with two sectional final appearances, four regional championships, two conference championships and two players unanimously voted Conference Player of the Year. While I have not coached the girls team since 2012, my final season of coaching the ladies witnessed their first playoff win.

We are blessed to play home games under the lights and a few new practice balls to keep my assistant coaches happy. Speaking of coaches, we have on-staff coaches assisting and coaching both programs, as well as many dedicated lay people offering their time and love for the game. (See story of anniversary party, page 4.)

As we look forward, we know God is the one who holds our future. No matter what we're involved in at LL, it serves as one of the many ways for us to serve and give HIM the glory.

It's an honor to teach at Lakeside, to encourage teens in the classroom, and in their activities. Blessings continue as alums still glorify their Savior. Some work in public ministry, some in the military. Some have the full-time job of parenting. Some work on the family farm, while others sit at a desk or put on miles running around hospital units. And there are a few already in heaven with Jesus. It's always a thrill to be reunited, even for a short time. It is a great honor to be asked to preach at an alum wedding—and not just for the food. The familiar faces, smiles, laughter, and reminiscing is but a taste of what heaven will be like and one of the reasons serving at Lakeside is the best job—or rather, privilege— there is. One final thank you to the board members, parents, fans, alums and players for the past decade and a final shout out to our great God: TO HIM BE THE GLORY!

Where are they now?

These men and women were members of the first fall 2007 and spring 2008 Lakeside Lutheran soccer teams.

We caught up with them to get their thoughts on that first season—and what they are doing now.

Kyle Hinstorff '09

What was it like on the first team?

It felt like we were doing something "bigger" than just playing soccer.

Being on that first team meant we were bringing together students to do something we love for many years to come.

Best memory from that season?

My favorites revolve a lot around practices during the season. We never knew what we were going to get out of the weather or field conditions, making for extremely interesting practices. I'll also never forget our first win as a program.

What did that season teach you?

Because it took a lot of families’ hard work and money to start the program, I learned to appreciate little things we're provided. It also shows the power of God's grace, that anything really is possible.

Describe your first year.

Being a part of the first soccer team had its ups and downs.

We didn't always play well, but a good number of my friends played on the team so we always had fun.

A moment that stands out is getting nervous standing on the field for our first game as we waited for kickoff.

What did that first year teach you?

Hard work pays off. When we first started the program, we didn't have much team chemistry and didn't play well together. As the season progressed, the team improved and we played better as a team.

What did you do after graduation?

I graduated UW–Stout and currently work for Presidio as a Systems Engineer.

Emily (Erdmann) Schmidt '08

What was the first team like?

Where has God taken you after LL?

I graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in economics.

I've been fortunate to work in the NBA since graduation. I worked the front office in 2014 for the world champion San Antonio Spurs, and I currently sell suites and sponsorships for the Dallas Mavericks.

Being on the first soccer team at Lakeside was awesome. We had a range of talent. We bonded really well. We had girls from every grade on the team, but that made our bond more interesting.

the field and many of us became really good friends. Bus rides were never quiet. We would be singing and laughing the entire time.

What moment stands out?

We were playing Lake Mills toward the end of the season and since it was a rivalry, everyone on the team wanted to play her best. I played left side fullback, a friend played right side fullback and another friend played sweeper. A Lake Mills player took a shot towards the shot and the ball hit one of my friends square in the face. My other friend and I looked at her, and yelled "GET UP!!!

Get the Ball!!" She got up, cleared the ball and THEN we both went over to make sure she was okay. By game end, we were all laughing that we were most concerned about Lake Mills scoring on us.

What did you learn that year?

The season taught me that trying something new is always worth it.

Hard work always pays off. And most importantly, as a Co-Captain that didn't have as much soccer experience as other girls, it taught me that a good leader is one that listens and relies on their team.

And after graduating LLHS?

I graduated UW-M with a B.A. in Psychology with a Certificate in Childhood and Adolescent Studies.

Now, I am the VP of Multi-Channel Insights at mk Cellular Inc., with nine locations in and around the area, so I'm always busy!

Alumni Soccer Reunion

The first Lakeside Boys Soccer team made its debut in the fall of 2007. According to the yearbook, that inaugural season, the Warriors had a record of 13-2-1!

To celebrate the 10th season, Lakeside invited alumni soccer teammates from the guys' program and their families back to where it all began. On August 19, 2016, on a gorgeous fall afternoon before a home football game, the current team took on the alumni (with the alumni claiming victory). Tell us about being on that first team.

It was incredibly exciting.

The entire team was genuinely thrilled to be part of the first soccer team. It acted as an agent to bond the team, united toward one cause.

We worked together every practice, every game, to make the team the best we could be. Since we didn't have a soccer field to practice on, we ran to the grade school down the road to practice. I remember always dreading that "workout" before practice, but the team had fun singing songs and encouraging each other along the way.

What did that season teach you?

The importance of being committed to your passions. Soccer was a sport I grew up playing, but didn't play for years as I ran track for

LLHS. Switching to soccer my senior year reminded me of everything I love about the sport.

What are you currently doing?

I graduated UW-Whitewater with an Accounting degree. Starting in a Finance and Accounting Rotational program at Johnson Controls, I had the opportunity to live in Oklahoma and Slovakia. I'm still with JC in the Internal Audit department, responsible for leading audits in North and South America.

Caitlyn Moyle '10

What are your memories from that first season?

I had played soccer since I was four, so I was more than excited to finally have soccer at Lakeside. Since most girls had not played soccer competitively, it was a building experience for all. Overall, I remember the dedication and determination put in by the players, coaches, and all involved to make our first year a success. Some of us still talk about that memorable first season.

My personal, favorite memory was scoring the first goal off of a penalty at Lake Mills.

After my shot, seeing Coach Clark's face was fantastic.

What did that season teach you?

If you put your mind to it, you can always improve and work with a group of girls from all soccer backgrounds to create a strong team. Teamwork, leadership, and perseverance are aspects of the game that are now used in my daily life.

What are you doing now?

I received my Bachelors in Nursing at Edgewood College in Madison. I work as a RN in labor and delivery in the greater Milwaukee area and am continuing my education for my Masters of Science in Nursing. I am getting married in June 2017.

Burrow’s Service Different Than Most

Lake Mills native and Lakeside Lutheran 1965 grad Eugene "Gene" Burrow did not have the Vietnam War experience most people would associate with that military campaign.

While combat is what many people tend to imagine with "Army soldier," there are military roles that are just as vital as those who engage the enemy.

Burrow was a part of the Army's 575th Engineer Battalion from 1966–68 and served one year in Vietnam in places throughout the country.

“If there’s going to be an army, there needs to infrastructure for it to use,” Burrow said. “The engineers build the airstrips, the bases and things like that. The engineers are the backbone. They built everything for the infantry.”

When Burrow was drafted, he took three days’ worth of tests in order to figure out what branch he was going to be assigned to.

Due to his interest and capabilities in plumbing, Burrow was assigned to the 575th Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart in Georgia after basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. “When you first go in, there’s about three days where you take tests on what your knowledge and capabilities were and everything,” Burrow said. “What came out of that is they gave me an MOS (military occupational specialty) as a plumber.”

It was not until May 1967 that he received orders to ship out to Vietnam. He was sent to Vũng Tàu, now the port capital of the Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu Province. While there, Burrow and the rest of the 575th built mine barriers and installed hot running water in bathrooms.

At one point, his battalion floated on its barge barrack to Mỹ Tho, on the Mekong Delta just east of Vũng Tàu.

After that, the 575th moved to Dang Tan to acquire lumber to the building of a roof over its barrack, then to Vĩnh Long and back to Vũng Tàu to build piers.

The main goal the battalion had when stationed in Vũng Tàu was to construct ports. Burrow would man the pile driver, splice poles together and lay down the decking for piers at the port he and his battalion built in Vũng Tàu. “Once we built it, it was there for the (people of South Vietnam) to use. Mainly it was to help our Navy troops in the area,” Burrow said. “The main method of transportation was the river system.”

During his time in Vietnam, Burrow also pursued one of his favorite hobbies: photography.

He took more than 700 photos of the people of Vietnam, their way of life, the countryside, villages and towns. Burrow would even climb some of the cranes his battalion used to take photos.

When he returned to Lake Mills, Burrow organized all of his photos to display to various groups across the Jefferson County area.

Burrow never saw combat but said he knew it was all around. “We could hear airstrikes but we really weren’t in the thick of it,” Burrow said. “Where we had the job

Upon discharge in July '68, Burrow had no idea what he wanted to do. Given his MOS as a plumber, he stopped at Metzker’s Plumbing & Heating in Lake Mills. Two weeks later, began working for the company. Burrow became a master plumber and started his own business, Gene Burrow Plumbing.

One of the constants throughout much of Burrow’s post-Army life was his wife, Cheryl (Klug). Both graduates of Lakeside, Gene in '65 and Cheryl in '71, they wed in 1976 and have always lived in Lake Mills.

Another of the consistent aspects of Burrow’s life is his support and involvement with American Legion Post No. 67. He has been involved since 1968, served as commander for two years and was even named Jefferson County Legionnaire of the Year in 2010.

Burrow looks back on his service with a lot of fond memories. “It was hard work but we tried to enjoy ourselves as much as we could. We improvised and jerry-rigged a lot things to make our lives easier over there,” Burrow said. “My service was time well-spent.”

On December 17, Matthew Werre (‘16) directed his 1st 10 p.m. news show on his own for WSAW/WZAW in Wausau, Wis. “As director he's responsible for setting up and running our 30-minute live news programs. He sets up all the camera shots, mic, videos, interviews.

soccer honors from the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Nate was named to 1st team AllUMAC, while Joey was named to 2nd team.

Jake Gronholz ('13) led a Winona State Warriors’ attack that averaged 160.8 rushing yards and 281.4 passing yards-per-game in the 2016 football season. For his efforts, Gronholz was named to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate first team, the only WSU lineman to earn 1st-team honors.

Brady ('11) and Lynsey Broedlow were married September 10, 2016. They run the family farm in Helenville. They crop 200 acres and manage a cow calf operation. Both also have full-time jobs off the farm.

Isaiah Butler ('15), who diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in early 2016 and has undergone treatment for it, has had his "incredible ordeal" chronicled in the Lake Mills Leader newspaper: see ow.ly/Cg2g307a3x6

Kayla (Ridgeman '10) and Brad Stefanski were married June 11, 2016 at St. John in Jefferson. They celebrated with family and friends at Rustic Manor 1848, and currently live in Oconomowoc.

Jared Matthies ('08) accepted a call to Trinity-St Luke, Watertown to be 7th/8th grade teacher. His installation was August 28, 2016. He and wife Danielle live in Watertown.

Holly (Braunschweig '01) Tratar writes: "On March 27, 2016, Andrew and I welcomed our third child, Emma Lillie. Big brother Drew, 7, and sister Leah, 5, are a big help with Emma."

They live in Fall River, WI.

Amanda (Winters '04) and Shannon Main welcomed their first child, James Karl, on May 25, 2016. James was born at home in Woollonggabba, Queensland, Australia. Jim and Kimara (Knief) Winters ('86) are the proud stateside grandparents.

5-year-old Eva, daughter of Pastor Caleb and Audra (Davis '01) Basset was diagnosed with leukemia in November 2016 at their hometown in Fallbrook, CA. In December, the Lord granted her remission. Audra keeps a blog at goo.gl/Bp7nMI

Alexander Michael Rowe was born on July 9, 2016 to Sara (Lenser '00) and Brian Rowe. The family lives in West Bloomfield, MI. Daniel Graunke ('97) passed away November 22, 2016. Survived by wife Lisa, services were Nov. 29 at St. Paul Lutheran in Lake Mills.

Randy Tiedt ('87) entered his heavenly home October 25 after a battle with cancer. He is survived by wife, Lisa and two children, Madeline and Emerson. A celebration of Randy’s life was Nov. 2 at Holy Cross Lutheran in Madison.

Kim (Hartel '91) Churchill writes: "Chuck and I were blessed to welcome Caleb Michael to our family on January 7, 2016. He joined brothers Clayton (12) and Connor (9)." The Churchills live in Janesville.

Barry R. Kutz ('64) of Fort Atkinson, passed away on November 2. 2016. Survived by his wife Patricia and brother Randall, funeral services were held at Bethany Lutheran in Fort.

Jon ('91) and Kate Loging welcomed a second daughter into the world on March 23, 2016. Evie Marie Loging was 8 lbs. 2.8 oz and 21.5 inches long. Big sister, Zoey (age 5), is "very excited to have a little sister." The Logings live in Mankato, MN.

Gwen "Ma" Mueller, a smiling face in the LLHS office for years, passed away November 27, 2016, age 81. Survived by her husband of 60 years, Dale, and sons Philip ('80), Paul ('83) and Peter ('85), Services were December 1 at Our Redeemer Lutheran in Madison.

Memories for a Lifetime

Annah Dobson (‘16) was crowned 2016-17 National Hereford Queen during the 2016 American Royal National Hereford Show in Kansas City Oct. 30.

She will spend the next year traveling across the U.S. as an agriculture advocate. A freshman at UW-River Falls, Annah plans to earn degrees in agricultural marketing, communications and ag business and stay involved in the Hereford industry.

Madison Jane Ward was born to Heather (Grandt '02) & Matthew Ward August 24, 2016— 8 lbs 4 oz and 20.5". Heather writes: "She shares her birthday with her aunt Erica (Grandt '98) Hoffman! She is our first child and we feel blessed beyond words to be her parents." The Wards live in Olalla, WA.

Reunion reports... Class of 1966 Class of 1966 held its 50th on October 15 at Plattdeutscher Hall in Watertown with 31 class members attending. A total of $1,595 was collected to be used by Lakeside towards their "Wish List" items.

Class of 1986 Class of 1986 celebrated its 30-year reunion at both the LLHS Homecoming Alum Zone on October 5, and then continued the party at the Brian & Tammy Hafenstein farm in rural Lake Mills after the game. Some made both, some made one, all had fun!
