ecember is a month many associate with gifts. A few gifts that come to mind when we think of Lakeside Lutheran High School are those that one might say are “priceless”. We celebrate these gifts daily. Join us as we reflect on a few memories from 2014.

Resolute on Christian Education

One of my fondest memories at Lakeside happened in 2001. As the Lakeside girls’ basketball team was making its run for the state championship, our team was described as being resolute. That description has stuck with me all these years, not only as being a part of that state run, but also in thinking of how important it is to me that my children remain resolute in the run for the prize of heaven. Christian education plays an important part in that eternal quest.

Last January— when our youngest graduated college— marked an end of 33 continuous years of Christian education for our 5 children. I am sure there are those who would question the cost of tuition for that many years, but for my husband and me, that cost was well worth it and was never given a second thought. We are thankful that we have always lived in an area where Christian education was available for our children.

I think the most important years are the high school teen years. When I think about all the new, challenging, and exciting events that take place during those years, it was a comfort to know that friends, coaches and teachers shared their same faith – day in and day out. The coaches who guided my children witnessed to them on and off the court, taught them Christian values and life skills in practices, prayed and recited hymn verses with them in the locker room, and reminded them where their talents came from. They were reminded that their worth didn’t come from what people thought of their performance; instead it came from being complete in Christ. Knowing that our children were being exposed to God’s Word throughout the day by Christian teachers who kept them focused on Christ made every monetary sacrifice worth it.

As a Lakeside teacher and former Lakeside coach, I have witnessed these priceless blessings. As a Lakeside parent I am so thankful that my children had the opportunity to experience these blessings. When asked “was it worth it?

Resolutely, I reply, “Absolutely.”

Gayle and her husband Jim have served at Lakeside since 1999. The Bauer clan gathered November 2013 to cheer on a Warrior boys basketball victory that also marked Jim Bauer’s 500th victory after 32 years of coaching at two Lutheran high schools. He is one of only 30 coaches in Wisconsin high school boy’s basketball to reach this milestone.

Rho

Fellowship

Members of the Rho Fellowship, with the Lord’s guidance, have provided multiple gifts totaling less than $1,000 within the last year to Lakeside Lutheran High School. The Greek letters Rho and Chi form the symbol for Christ. This symbol, displayed in the center of our school seal, serves as a reminder that Christ is the center of our faith at Lakeside. Through this faith we return our blessings to continue His work.

Since that time it has been a joy to serve in our WELS elementary and secondary schools. My first call was tutor at Michigan Lutheran Seminary, then as the first teacher and principal at Memorial Lutheran in Williamston, MI, followed by 14 years at St. Mark’s in Watertown, where I am still a member.

As I retire this school year, it is time to say thank you. Thank you for the honor of teaching at Lakeside. My wife, Anita, and I thank St. Mark’s congregation and the Lakeside Federation for your part in sharing the gospel message with our children Cathy (‘95), Aaron (‘00), Greg (‘02), and Becky (‘05). Thank you to our sister school, Luther Prep, for the four years given our son Rodney (‘98). Christian education is a shared responsibility. Thank God for the many wonderful people who have been instrumental in our lives and the lives of our children.

My teaching career began at Hay Springs High School in Nebraska after my graduation from Chadron State College. The thought of teaching in our WELS schools never crossed my mind, but God guides and directs our paths in many wonderful ways. It was in his plan that I spend some time in the U.S. Army, working with children whose fathers were in Vietnam. Afterward I went back to school to get a degree in recreation. On my way from Nebraska to Fond du Lac for a YMCA directors interview, I stopped in New Ulm to visit our teacher training school. I planned only to visit, but ended up enrolling to get my Synodical certification.

Mr. Hahn is most recently serving as Athletic Director at your Lakeside Lutheran High School.

He also teaches all sections of Boys PhyEd.

Says Coach Hahn: “I am now in my 20th year at Lakeside. What a joy it has been. Students graduate and new students arrive, but the message that we are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus does not change. I have been privileged to be a part of this ministry where parents have entrusted their children to us, the faculty and staff of LLHS. There is no greater joy than knowing that I will spend an eternity in heaven with those I taught and with all the colleagues who joined with me in sharing that eternal message. God has truly blessed my 20 years at Lakeside.”

Individual leaves are engraved with individual and family names and shine like the light these donors have provided for the future of our ministry here at Lakeside Lutheran.
