Grandparents’ day for the sophomores and seniors this year was successful. Although Lakeside had a lot going on that day, due to hosting the Large Group Band Festival, they still made the grandparents feel welcomed. The grandparents started their morning out with a breakfast served by the Lakeside staff and some vol-

unteer students. After that, they got to meet up with their grandchild and go to the next two classes that they had. With the Large Group Band Festival happening, the grandparents even had an opportunity to go and listen to the Lakeside band perform its selected pieces. The grandparents also got to attend a chapel service and worship with the Lakeside student body and teachers.

Last week, Republican, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed a law that prevents an abortion procedure used commonly during the second trimester of a pregnancy from being legally used in Kansas. This law is called the “Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act.” Kansas is the first state to have a law like this. The law will go into effect on July 1. The law has sparked huge responses from both sides, with those in support calling it “groundbreaking” and those against calling it “unconstitutional.” Planned Parenthood advocates of Kansas and mid-Missouri were offended by the law, stating it is part of “extreme political measures aimed at denying women access to health care and at undermining their decision-making ability.” They also stated that “Kansas is now not only the sole state with this atrocious law; it also now has more restrictions on abortion than any state in the U.S.” Carol Tobias, the president of National Right to Life, was in full support of the law, saying “The Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act is the first of what we hope will be many state laws banning dismemberment abortions,” and “this law has the power to transform the landscape of abortion policy in the United States.” A woman named Cheryl Sullenger of Operation Rescue stated that “over 600 lives will be protected every year in Kansas [because of this law].” Many abortion advocacy groups plan to challenge the law in court. With both sides butting heads at the issue, the possibility of both sides going to court over the law is high.

Grandparents like being able to spend time with their grandchildren and see what their lives are like. This is a day that grandparents look forward to, and Lakeside tries to make it as fun and exciting for them as they can. Although some of the grandparents might have gotten lost or left behind, they still enjoyed the day, and will come back in the future.

On Wednesday, April 8, bands and orchestras gathered at Lakeside Lutheran from Columbus high school, Columbus middle school, Lake Mills high school, and Lake Mills middle school for the WSMA Large Band Festival. For those who are thinking “But we already had Band Fest!”, this is something completely different. Bands from the Capitol Conference perform in front of judges--like the Fine Arts Fair, but with shinier plaques and less doughnuts. Bands performed in the East Gym in front of a panel of three judges and spectators. The visiting schools were assigned home rooms, and Lakeside used the band room. The band room also doubled as the warm-up room, which led to difficulties with getting instruments and music together. The Warrior Band performed three selections: “The King of Love my Shepherd is”, “Arabesque”, and “Raise your Joys and Triumphs High”. They received a first rating from all of the judges in attendance.

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7 staff reporter

Annah Dobson

Light: the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible. Imagine the world without light. Everyone on earth would be walking around in a big, black, lifeless world. All people would have no meaning, no reason to wake up the next day. Now, put light back in the picture. The world comes back to life. That is a great example of what a non-believer’s life would look like. Everyday, walking around, wandering without a purpose, is a persons life without Jesus. Now a believers life is much different. Each day the glory, and power of the Lord is shown. By Jesus’ innocent blood our days are not long and lifeless, but bright and used to show his glory.
