Summer 2015 Congratulations FFA members, parents and supporters of agriculture education. June 17, 2015 will be a unique memory for these members as they shared their chartering with 3,657 Wisconsin FFA members and guests at the State FFA Convention in Madison. With the theme, ​ Target Success- Take Action, ​ both Richy Condon and Mindy Meske served as delegates in electing next year’s State FFA Vice PresidentBryce Krull from Lake Mills.

Both Brett and Nick admire the classic debate between green and red in some restored tractors up for raffle across Jacob, Annah and Richy are “jumping” Wisconsin by fellow FFA members. at the start of history being made.

Besides attending the career show, members also attended workshops on a variety of topics from working with hunger on a local level to how to set more realistic goals. Highlights included seeing State Proficiencies (awards based on project hours and investments and development) along with the Stars over Wisconsin based on Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE or projects) and chapters highlighted with their activities that they complete throughout the year.

Our thanks to Mrs. Rachelanne Dobson for assisting with chaperoning. Of course none of this would have been possible without the Lord’s blessings. Hebrews 6:7 “Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God.” May it continue to grow in His glory.

Looking for FFA Members to help at the Farm Tech grounds​ on ​ Monday​ , August 10 and/or ​ Tuesday​ , August 11.

Activities would include putting up snow fence, moving wood chips or helping with the grounds in preparation for 60,000+ people to Dane County on August​ 25-27. ​ For each volunteer hour, $8 would be earned by our chapter. Please contact Mr. Meske if you are able as we would take a van up near Marshall on the Statz Brothers Farm.

We need to commit to a shift of at least 4 hours.

Thanks to numerous FFA and 4-H members helping on June 20 and 21 during the annual Watertown Agribusiness Council Dairy Breakfast at Hasel Farms outside of Lake Mills.

Congratulations to $500 scholarship winners from the proceeds, Justin Nehls in 2014 and Jacob Nehls in 2015.

Ag Survey starts this Fall!

So what might be some new projects at Lakeside to get our students involved in aspects of agriculture or producing food, fiber and natural resources? To the left are some examples of both how hydroponics and aquaculture can be incorporated on a small scale in the class. If you might have some old aquariums not in use or water jugs, please contact Mr. Meske. These projects not only look at water quality, but the growth of different lettuces and basil off of either fertilizer or fish waste.

Another project will involve growing out some poinsettias for Christmas.

Lakeside’s courtyard will be a excellent learning lab to compare some different techniques in grafting and budding plants. Did you know that a tree from a nursery could be three trees grafted together? A hardy root stock is selected for our region, the height is determined by another graft, while the flowers and foliage becomes the “top”.

Students will also look at how biotechnology is affecting the food we eat, medicine and more. On a tour of UW-Madison, pictured is shown (right( how DNA is synthesized

on campus from base pairs. As compared to our alphabet of 26 letters, all DNA was created from the different sequence of only 4 different bases. Whether it be the cheese we eat (chymosin), that fresh tomato (flavr savr) or a glass of milk (Posilac), God allows a variety of mutations in nature happen and in the lab to allow for the wide palette that we see at the supermarket.

You​ do not ​ have to have ​ worn the blue and gold​ as a student yourself You ​ do not​ have to have been a ​ graduate of Lakeside Lutheran To charter an alumni group, at least 10 members would be needed Dues stand at $20 Contact Mr. Meske by ​ July 24th if interested The Alumni would assist the FFA like the MPO and Booster Club in proposing the fundraisers the FFA could complete in a year. ○ Example (Fruit/Cheese Sale, Easter Pork Sale, Silent Auction at Banquet, etc.)

State FFA Alumni goals include ■ To encourage positive relationships between agriculture education departments, school districts, communities, the FFA Family members, and the alumni affiliates.

■ To provide networking opportunities, leadership training, and advocacy information for affiliate and council members.

■ FFA Alumni host a variety of activities and coordinate a State Convention each year and host regional activities
