Your Success Advantage

...focus on what doesn't change

SUCCESS!

What things have you accomplished or want to accomplish in your lifetime? Take a minute and jot three things down.

Being successful is great! Let me list a few big accomplishments I have achieved in 50 years:

đ&#x;?? Took 12th place in the 6th grade spelling bee in Fond du Lac County đ&#x;?€ Finished as State Runner up in basketball my senior year in high school đ&#x;?” At age 21, ate four half-pound burgers in one sitting at a restaurant đ&#x;› Installed brand-new kitchen cabinets in my first home all by myself đ&#x;?… Coached a high school girls team in Illinois that earned 6 straight Conference Championships đ&#x;ŚŒ Bagged a huge 10-point buck

Sad to say, 100 years from now, not many people will ever remember or even care about the achievements I have had. At Lakeside this year, we have had some tremendous successes. You can read about our fall sports season on p. 6, or follow our Facebook page to hear about great news in other co-curriculars, academics and service projects. Yet, we know that personal and team achievements, although very exciting, those successes are not the reason we exist. From day one, when students join our family here, our #1 goal as a school and as teachers is to help teenagers know and appreciate their LORD while their faith is strengthened through a Christ-centered excellent education and activities. Then someday, when they leave our walls and the walls of their homes, they will be fully equipped with not only the tools needed to succeed in this world, but more importantly, a strong faith in Jesus, equipping them for eternity. Learning to spell is a great tool for life, winning games may make you feel great at the time (note: devouring four half-pound burgers may make you feel “not so good). Leaning on Jesus and on what he has accomplished for us through his life, death and resurrection will guarantee us success—not for just 100 years—but for all eternity.

Your Custom Advantage ...focus on finding the right start in high school

how much do you like math? Many do ... but perhaps many more of us ... Don’t. Like. Math. It can be tough! Yet, no matter what school you attend, you cannot avoid math class. For some of us, the idea of high school math class is exciting. Perhaps you’ve heard about Lakeside’s AH-MAZE-ING group of “mathletes” — teams that win conference titles and Madison league meets time after time? (We’d love to have you join the team!) But maybe you’re a bit worried about keeping up with high school math— why do they need to add the alphabet to numbers, anyway?! Wherever you land on the love/hate spectrum for math class, Lakeside has good news for you. Mr. Lauber just wrapped up his annual December visits to almost 20 area schools where many 8th graders take our math placement tests. What’s that for, you ask? Incoming Warriors will have at least four different levels of math from which to find their best fit, and these tests help Lakeside Guidance get them in the right math classroom next fall!

While test takers were wondering why someone would buy 43 watermelons in the first place and make a word problem with them, they let Mr. Lauber snap a pic. Good to see you, future Warriors! (and special thanks to TSL first-year principal, Mr. Phil Gustafson, for bringing the “office” Christmas cheer). Thanks for having us!

“Ask Mr. Lauber” Contest Last issue, elementary students were challenged to submit questions about Lakeside to Mr. Lauber, making themselves eligible for some great prizes and even a chance for some tuition credit!

? ?

 Grand prize winner: Ashlyn Jones, 6th grade at St. Paul, Lake Mills

? Mr. Lauber, Why do you think Lakeside is different than any other high school in Wisconsin?

F-A-C-E-S!

Family, Accountability, Christ-centeredness, Excellence in Everything and Servant attitude. That’s so unusual in a high school already, but then add our central location and that we provide busing and classes that are for a wide variety of student academic ability and interests for after graduation, and you have a pretty special school in your LLHS.

Runner-up: Karin Wilson, 5th grade at Eastside, Madison

?

Do you like being a teacher at Lakeside? I love it. Having co-workers that all have the same goal for our students is amazing. What’s the very best, though, is being able to guide teenagers on a daily basis--not only get ready for this world--but more importantly, to help them see how faith in Jesus makes all the difference in life.

Runner-up: Aria Welke, Kindergarten at St. Paul, Fort Atkinson

?

Lakeside is REALLY big. Does anyone ever get lost? Have you gotten lost? Freshmen can get lost the 1st week of school, but soon it’s super easy. I’m too tall to get lost anywhere!

Runner-up: Elijah Nelson, 7th grade at St. Mark, Watertown

?

How many seniors have graduated since it opened as a school? Since 1962, when the first seniors graduated, we have 5,065 alumni that we call “Forever Warriors.”

Here are a few other great ones Mr. Lauber had fun finding answers for: Liliana Eggert, 7th, St. Paul, Lake Mills How many former students came back to be a teacher in the history of Lakeside?

?

Interesting question! We found 17 across the years. Right now there are five: Mr. Tracy (Science), Mr. Asmus (Social Studies), Mrs. Krauklis (PhyEd), Mr. Pufahl (Band), and Mrs. Coron (Extended Learning Center).

Luke Neumann, 4th, St. Paul, Lake Mills How much land does Lakeside own? Our campus is 31 acres (that’s bigger than 23 full-size football fields).

?

Regan Welke, 5th, St. Paul, Fort Atkinson Fine Arts Fest wouldn’t be the same without them ... what is the history of the famous Lakeside donuts?

?

Almost 40 years ago, Pastor Toepel and the Stauffer family decided to make donuts for basketball games. They were a big hit for many, many years, but the work eventually became too much and they switched to making them only for the Fine Arts Fest and the Warrior basketball tourney.

Ezra McCrary, 3rd, Peace, Sun Prairie How many donuts are sold at FAF? We think the record was set 5 years ago after 5,200+ donuts sold on Saturday!

Your Fandom Advantage

...focus on Warrior sports

It was a good fall to be a Warrior fan! Did your school play sports this fall? If you didn’t, know that your principal and other leaders often need to make decisions based on where your school is located. Your LLHS didn’t know for a while either. The state high school sports organizer— the WIAA—and athletic departments across Wisconsin spent countless hours discussing 2020–21 sports; in the end, your LLHS decided that all our teams—cross country, football, girls golf, boys soccer, volleyball—would play this fall. Our Capitol Conference had no official events, so Warrior A.D. Jahns refilled each team’s entire schedule almost from scratch. All-conference awards did not happen, but that didn’t stop our Warriors from reaching for the stars and grabbing them.

do you know any of these warriors?

đ&#x;?…⛳ âš˝đ&#x;“Ł đ&#x;?ƒâ?ąđ&#x;?ž đ&#x;Ľˆđ&#x;?? đ&#x;?ˆđ&#x;?”

All five Lady Warriors on the state golf tournament team are Academic All-State honorees, including senior Kaylea Affeld (St. Mark, Watertown), senior Ella Butzine (alum of St. Paul, Ixonia), sophomore Ava & senior Maya Heckmann (St. Andrew, Middleton) and junior Lauren Lostetter (St. Paul, Lake Mills). Our soccer team dug in after a challenging season and won the regional championship, led in goals by Kyle Main (St. John, Juneau) and captains Carter Roekle (St. Andrew, Middleton), Elijah Wohling (Juneau) & Nate Krenke (St. John, Jefferson). Four cross country runners earned a trip to sectionals and three continued to the WIAA state meet up in Colby: soph Abigail Minning (St. Luke, Watertown) and freshmen Paige Krahn (Eastside, Madison), and Cameron Weiland (Zion, Columbus). After taking regional and sectional titles, the volleyball team continued to the State Finals, bringing home the silver ball. Senior setter Kaylee Raymond (Peace, Sun Prairie) was named Wisconsin’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 2-8 by MaxPreps/American Volleyball Coaches Association, and 3 players earned all-state team status: senior Payton Kuepers (Our Redeemer, Madison) on 1st team, senior Kylee Gnabasik (St. John, Jefferson) on 2nd and junior Ella DeNoyer (alum of Peace, Sun Prairie) honorable mention. The football team went 5-0 in regular season play and achieved a double overtime victory in the 2020 Slider Bowl against Lake Mills High School. They earned a #1 seed for post-season culminating events, when they went 1-1. Five Warriors were named to the All-Region Team by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association, including seniors Nate Chesterman for outside linebacker (Peace, Sun Prairie); Micah Cody, running back and inside linebacker (St. John, Juneau); Tersony Vater, defensive back (St. Luke, Watertown); John O’Donnell, tight end and defensive end (Holy Cross, Madison); and sophomore Ben Buxa, o-line and defensive end (alum of St. Paul, Lake Mills). Way to go, boys!

Your Coaching Advantage ...focus on knowing what's most important in sports

It's always a good time to be a Warrior coach While victories and honors are great, we love most of all that our Warriors are using God’s gifts for God’s glory, letting their light shine on the court, field, and course. That’s the coaches’ focus too! Here were some thoughts captured on social media and in newspaper article quotes from our fall head varsity coaches:

Cameron Ausen, cross country: I cannot overstate how proud I am of this group and what it has overcome this season with how much unpredictability there was. The athletes honored their Savior with their efforts and were great witnesses of God’s love in their races and in the way they conduct themselves. To God be the glory!

Audra Jensen, dance: What a tremendous blessing it already has been that we are able to meet face to face for practices. I am thankful for my team....because they are like a second family to me.

Paul Bauer, football: We are treasuring every opportunity. I am just as proud as can be of my kids. They didn’t quit.

Kyra Lostetter, golf: The Lakeside Pink Tees had an amazing experience at the State Tournament! We feel blessed to have had this opportunity. Way to let your light shine and make some great memories and school history.

Eric Dorn, soccer: I couldn’t quite find the words to share how happy and proud I was of my guys for playing hard and taking home a regional championship. So blessed to be able to have any sort of a season this year and to be able to coach this fine group of young men who represent their school and their Savior on and off the field.

Jenny Krauklis, volleyball: When it comes to coaching, winning is not the most important part for me. Faith comes first. It’s why I coach at the school I do, so that Jesus is first and foremost. It will always be to see each and every player in heaven one day. I am beyond proud of how hard they fought this season playing volleyball. But I am SO much more proud of how they share the love of their Savior with everyone. My prayer when they look back on this memory, is they remember the goodness of Jesus always, and they forever hold it close, until their final prize of heaven arrives. I will hug them so hard when I see them there! Do you Instagram?
