Your Creative Advantage

...focus on the Perfect Artist!

Shows like Fixer Upper, Property Brothers, and Love it or List it have taken our society by storm. Transforming ugly and undesirable houses into beautiful places can be very rewarding. We spend much of our time—as kids and adults—trying to design great works of art. Whether it is a colorful picture, making that perfect Easter dinner, coming up with a home interior or landscape design, or—like at Lakeside—designing things in our STEM, art, or welding classes. We also know and believe in the greatest designer ever: God. He created our world. He created all living things. He created us. We were perfect without any faults. But sin quickly changed that and we were reduced to a crumbling mess destined to be bulldozed into eternal death. However, God’s greatest design was when he sent his son Jesus to “fix” us after sin had ruined the human race. Through his perfect life and death on the cross we were made holy, blameless, and perfect again. At Lakeside Lutheran we have the wonderful opportunity every day to share the truth about God’s power, his might, and, above all, his love for us. In a world that many times focuses on this earth and what it may have, we know we have a great designer that will eventually give us the crown of life in our perfect home—heaven.

Your Federated Advantage ...focus on St. Paul, Lake Mills

PARTNERS IN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION St. Paul was one of the nine charter congregations that comprised the Lakeside Lutheran Federation in 1962. We are thankful for all 32 churches and 21 schools that join together to support Christian secondary education at Lakeside. That’s why this page is here, to introduce you to our Federation schools.

St. Paul, Lake Mills Colors: Red & White Mascot: Cardinal Enrollment PK–8: 229 Alum at LLHS: 60 Principal: Steve Gartner

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN: “I believe our strongest partnership bond comes from the fact that we are able to promote Preschool-12th grade Christian education,” says Principal Gartner. “Being just down the road from Lakeside makes for an easy connection between the schools for both new and long-standing families. The students look forward to all the opportunities Lakeside offers to get them on the campus of their future school.” Another blessing of the partnership is that students are able to grow in faith for four more critical teen years. “Lakeside teachers, through the various classes they teach, are able to give the students the tools they need to be Christian servant leaders as they continue in whatever path they may choose in their future,” he says.

WHY LL ALUM SEND THEIR CHILDREN: “Alongside Christian education, we like that Lakeside draws kids from all over. [Our senior and sophomore] love meeting new friends. Great college prep. Kids are well-rounded, good human beings. We need more of that in this world.” - Brad ‘93 and Cheryl (Nemcek ‘96) Koenig “Our four boys have and will get a great Lutheran education that prepares them to be valuable members of society as well as God-fearing ones. They go out into this world prepared both mentally and spiritually, strong in faith and educationally ready for the next challenge in front of them.” - Brian and Rebecca (Zastrow ‘95) Neumann

I’M EXCITED TO GO TO LLHS BECAUSE... “they have some classes I don’t see other places. They also have good cookies and donuts.” - Heidi H “I love theater and golf and I want an opportunity to do those things. I also get to grow my faith.” - Ruby L. “of the fun classes like metals and woodworking.” - Nolan “of the outreach opportunities, and their videography and science classes. I really like the ability to be in God’s Word in all the classes and sports offered by the school.” -Joah R. “of their FFA program!” - Natalie

Warrior Basketball Contest They shot. They scored! As our Warrior basketball players took their best shots on the court this season, our grade school friends took their best shot on guessing how many total points both varsity teams would score combined throughout all their games. They also broke it down for us—girls v. boys—so we could break a tie. Total points scored: 2588 (Girls: 1201 and Boys: 1387)

Congrats to our Gold winner who guessed the EXACT number of combined points. (Almost spot on for each team too!)

Your SWELL Advantage

...corny nickname, empowering agenda

...a totally SWELL STEM workshop The Society of Women Engineers (at) Lakeside Lutheran—aka SWE-LL— is a branch of the national SWENext outreach program and part of the international Society of Women Engineers, which calls iteself the “world’s largest advocate and catalyst for change for women in engineering and technology.” Lakeside is one of only two high school branches in the state. Because numbers of females in engineering careers are still low, SWE-LL members want to pass along STEM excitement to the next generation too. Our Warriors got their start with a STEM workshop for K-8 girls held on March 7, with 33 participants. “An all-girls STEM day is important because it gives them an opportunity to learn about things they aren’t going to get exposure to every day, Elementary scientists debate the and to do so in an environment with only likelihood of space travel using pasta. girls,” said SWE-LL president Ella Butzine, a junior. “This event—beneficial because it shows them that women can be great engineers and scientists—opened up their eyes to a future they maybe never knew they could have.” After beginning with devotion, girls rotated through four hands-on stations: • elephant’s toothpaste (i.e., exothermic reaction) • pasta rockets (propulsion/thrust) • making sorbet without a freezer (chemistry/freezing point depression) • building marshmallow-toothpick towers (structural stability) Disclaimer: the pasta rocket wasn’t actually hands-on . . . because it was on fire. To round out the 3-hour workship, all the girls engineered paper airplanes and took home a Mega Construx kit for future building efforts. As fun as the day was, all the SWE-LL members knew there was another mission: sharing more about God’s creation. Senior secretary Lauren Thiele summed it up, “The best part about the day was the opportunity to reach out to girls from all over—not just from our grade schools. We got the chance to share God’s Word with them, be role models for them, learn about them, and teach them about how exciting STEM is!”

Your Sprouting Advantage ...LLHS learning at home this spring

Planting seeds of knowledge For seven years, Admissions Director Steve Lauber has hosted second graders to campus during March and April to show them a day in the life of a high schooler, familiarize them with the halls of Lakeside (after all, they’ll be here for Fine Arts Fest, tournaments, concerts, math meets, spelling bees and camps for years to come!) and give them lessons in high school subjects that have included band, videography, physics, biology, phy ed and more. This year’s early March brought some “dirty” fun as Warrior teens in our Earth Science class taught federation lambs about soil, seeds and hydroponics. Unfortunately, only six of the expected 14 classrooms were able to visit before schools closed this spring. We thought it might be homebound fun to explore some of the concepts we covered. (Maybe you could even enter the contest on p. 5 using some aspect of your distance learning?) LLHS teens taught 1st-2nd graders about: 1. The 3 Fs of Agriculture see llhs.org/apps/pages/advantagemag for #1-2 and online links for all 2. What do we grow in Wisconsin? 3. How do plants grow? Try: kidsgardening.org/lesson-plans-germination-exploration (Mr. Lauber has lots of seed packets left—email slauber@llhs.org and he’ll get some to you for this!) 4. What do plants need in order to grow? Watch this 25-sec video! bit.ly/LLSeedGrowVid 5. Is it possible to grow plants without dirt? Watch the at bit.ly/LLhydroponics 6. What are the different levels of soil? Check out this vid: bit.ly/LLSoilLayersVid 7. Of course, then you’ll need to make dirt cups! Recipe at bit.ly/LLdirtcups

What could you try at home this spring? We’d love to see what you experiment with, whether it be on a sunny window ledge, in a garden, on the computer, or in the kitchen! Share with us so we can celebrate your home learning with you.
