Your XL Elfin Advantage
...focus on sharing the message! “The best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” Buddy the Elf was right, There is no better way to spread Christmas cheer than through song. What a blessing that we have an opportunity every day here at Lakeside to be reminded about the love of Jesus and the life that we have through him. As a result, we are His witnesses here on Earth to share that great message with others. We do that through our words and actions, but also through song.
Whether we hear “Joy to the World” being sung to grandmas and grandpas at a nursing home, “O Wondrous Night” at the Lakeside Christmas Concert, the soothing sound of “Silent Night” on Christmas Eve in church, or singing “Mary, Did You Know” as we drive in the car, these are all ways that we can be witnesses, within our own families and to the world. We share the hope and joy that is not only there for us, but for all people. May God bless us as we use many different ways to spread that news to everyone.
Steve Lauber, Admissions Director For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. —Luke 2:11

Principal Klug shares, “We are encouraging families to partner with Lakeside by announcing events in our weekly parent newsletter and monthly congregational letter. We have been attending the Lakeside Fine Arts fair, plays, and recruiting events. We have also had girls participate in the dance clinics the past few years. We hope to get more involved in other LES activities in the future.”

WHAT PARENTS SAY: “The difference that Lakeside has made in our children’s lives is: We feel that the faculty really get to know our children and they aren’t just a number at Lakeside. They make our kids feel comfortable enough to try new things and develop their talents. They challenge them to step out of their comfort zone while maintaining a safe, nurturing foundation. The students themselves at Lakeside seem to be very engaged with what’s happening around them. They seem happy and like they are actually enjoying high school. It’s a very positive atmosphere.” “As a parent, I have always focused on the spiritual benefits of Lakeside, but the academic difference really sets apart their education and equips them well for college and the future!” issue 20 • llhs.org/K-8 • page 3

Your Inside Advantage
...why would someone run for Student Council?
Educating, encouraging, equipping students for lives of service...
...beginning the moment they walk through Lakeside’s doors. One way we equip students for leadership is through our Student Council (SC). The chief purpose of Lakeside Lutheran SC is to serve the student body by setting Christian examples and encouraging Christian fellowship and service. Council, advised by Pastor Mark Toepel (aka Señor) aims to develop Christian leadership and God-given talents. It serves as a link between the students and faculty and has responsibility for many of the school’s social functions and activities (e.g., Homecoming, Winter Carnival, intramural athletics, blood drives, dances). Student Council members discuss problems and recommend changes regarding student life. It has charge of the mission offerings and investigates worthwhile mission work to which offerings may be contributed. Each class has its own representatives and, in addition, a group of four seniors serve>> as student body officers. Here these four share how they witness through Student Council and how it prepares them for lives of service and leadership.
Secretary
Elise Meier
St. Mark, Watertown alum off to WLC or Carroll to study anthropology and Spanish (sisters Audrey in 10th, Maria in 8th, Ruby in PK)
What has Student Council taught you? “To be elected to Student Council by peers is an incredible honor and responsibility. Once elected, we have to learn the duties of a leader, to learn how to be servant-leaders.” How does Student Council allow you to witness? “Student Council officers serve the student body; we listen to our peers and try to make their ideas happen. Officers witness by working together to show our love for Jesus by representing the student body. Lakeside’s core is on the truth of God’s Word, which naturally creates witnesses. There are so many opportunities for students to volunteer. Anytime someone serves, they witness.”
Why should future Warriors run for student council? “Student Council helps develop leadership skills for later in life. College may still be far away, but when you fill out college applications, you’re asked what you’ve done since freshman year, and participating in student council shows contribution to your school and developed leadership skills. Finally, as a student council member, you get to converse ideas with your classmates about how events are organized and happen, and represent your class.”
Treasurer
Micah Missal
Zion, Columbus alum off to UW-LaCrosse to study sports medicine or become an athletic trainer
How do you witness through Student Council? “There are different ways to witness through student council. One of the most notable ways is just by how you act. People respect the students on Council and will be able to see the Christian manner with which you hold yourself. There are other ways than just actions, such as showing strangers and peers that they are valued by Christ and by you, supporting fellow members in Christ, and being an honest and trustworthy person that will represent both class and Lakeside.”
page 6 • The Lakeside Advantage • 2019 Issue 3
Your Involved Advantage What have you learned from SC? “I gained a greater appreciation for all of the background work that goes into the fun stuff that happens at Lakeside. Whether or not it’s a Student Councilrun activity, everything that happens at Lakeside requires careful planning.”
President
Lauren Thiele
Holy Cross, Madison alum off to UW–Madison or U of MN-Twin Cities to study business
How does being on SC help you witness? “Witnessing comes easy in Student Council since everything that we do is centered around God. For example, since Council organizes Homecoming, we make sure everything we plan for the week is God-pleasing and in a way, is witnessing through the things that the public sees. With mission offering plans, we support some cause to help others just as Christ did! During the blood drive, we give people the opportunity to thank God for their own health by giving blood to help others. Lakeside is a great place to be reminded of why I want to let my light shine. It’s not for any personal gain, it is all for the glory of God.”
Vice-President
Why should students run for SC? “This is my first year Peace, Sun Prairie alum being a part of it and off to Northwestern College I definitely wish I in Orange City, Iowa, to had gotten involved major in business and sooner. The people are minor in entrepreneurship amazing; it’s a giant meeting with your friends. Señor makes it so fun for us, but also makes sure we get done what is needed. There’s also a sense of pride that comes along with it when you see your classmates having tons of fun doing homecoming activities or dressing up during Spirit Week.”
Grace Westrate

Top–bottom: Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors
