Your Worry Advantage

T

eenagers can be a very interesting group to observe on a daily basis. You can see many different emotions depending on what hallway you might be standing in. After you’ve been around them a while like I have, one emotion that’s easy to see and hear is worry. Teens tend to worry about stuff from sunup until sundown.

“Is this the right outfit? I don’t think these shoes go with it.”

“My hair just doesn’t look right today. Maybe I should just put it in a pony.”

“I think I’m going to fail the history test.”

“Does my breath smell? I need gum. Do you have any mints?”

“Do you think I should just go up to her and ask her? What if she says no?”

“I’m nervous about the game tonight. I wonder how I’ll do.”

If you wander hallways and listen closely enough, these would be just some of the worries you could hear on a daily basis in the halls of Lakeside.

As adults, worries can, unfortunately, still cause sleepless nights and stressful days.

“What will the doctor say?” “How can we afford to do this?” “Will I get that promotion?”

“Can we get another year out of this car?” “Will my child make good decisions when I’m not around?”

Thankfully, we are reminded in God’s Word that the worries of this world don’t ever have to weigh us down. We have a God who promises to carry us through each day of grade school, high school, jobs, retirement, and eventually, safely to heaven.

What a blessing it is to be able to daily share that wonderful news with our teenage students here at Lakeside. It’s a priceless message that will carry them and us through this life. God will provide.

Your Co-curric Advantage ...focus on Christ-centered service

Be a part of something BIG: How do you want to serve NOW? To educate, encourage, and equip for life and eternity, Lakeside knows that students need more than just classroom lessons. That’s why we also offer co-curricular opportunities. These are ways for students to gain leadership skills and serve the people around them. We have dozens of ways for students to lead, but here are four of our favorites from this year. Have your own ideas? How will you be involved in serving others?

Supporting foster families

Our National Honor Society (NHS) has partnered with Kingdom Workers to support its new Foster Support Program. In Wisconsin alone, over 7,200 children are in foster care, and up to 80% of foster parents opt out of fostering within two years due to inadequate support. To help support this cause, NHS held #LLHStoytotheworld—a toy drive that brought in hundreds of gifts to brighten the lives of children living in foster care.

Baking for the ROC

At the Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center For Youth, teens find a safe, positive, free and fun place to hang out with other teens. They can learn more about life and death issues and receive support and guidance in life. Our Teens for Christ hosted a bake sale where 100s of students and staff made, bought, and ate yummy homemade treats. Raising over $400, Teens for Christ was able to fund a new foosball table.

Donating blood

Each year our Student Council organizes a blood drive to support Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin. Students, teachers, and community members are welcome to participate. This donation helps ensure there is enough of a blood supply to meet community needs.

Making breakfast

Five years ago, Lakeside began the first parochial school chapter of FFA— and what a history it already has. Among the dozens of events and activities that educate or raise awareness for ag and technical education through the year, these uber-active teens help at county dairy breakfasts and host their own teacher appreciation breakfast in the Tech Ed room.

Contest open to K-8 students in 2019-20 school year. One entry per person; designs become property of Lakeside Lutheran High School, who may choose to produce stickers using the design of the winning entry. The student whose design is chosen as the basis for the new sticker will receive a $200 tuition credit voucher, applicable to first semester of attendance at LLHS, in addition to cool Lakeside swag or other gifts that may also be awarded to runners up. Prizes not transferable. Deadline to enter: September 16, 2019, to be eligible for prizes. Lakeside is not responsible for misdirected or lost entries. ...sharing worries & wonderings about high school

What about those worries?

The Warrior Band marched in seven Wisconsin parades in June, including this one in Sun Prairie, and then traveled to Michigan for the National Cherry Festival over the 4th of July weekend.

This summer, we caught up with a couple of soon-to-be sophomores and juniors at the annual band camp that kicks off parade season. Now that they have been Warriors for a year or two, we asked what they worried about before they started LLHS—and how soon they discovered it wasn’t as hard as they thought. With all the activities Lakeside has to offer, you’ll find your niche. It seems most worry about finding friends and fitting in, but read on to discover that not only do you find friends, but you also find family.

Aaron had two older siblings come to Lakeside, but they had both graduated by the time he started. He knew a few people who were coming here, but soon found out that he made more friends really quickly. Also, “band camp is so much fun and it’s easy to pick up the marching.” He plays basketball and runs track.

sat with the few people he did know and soon other people joined in around them. Also, he shares that “homework didn’t turn out to be that big of a deal.” You can do it! He is in football, basketball, and baseball.

Making friends.

“We live 45 minutes away and others lived closer.

I wondered if I would be able to see them on weekends,” she says. “It started out hard, but once I got to know more people, they almost worked harder to make up for the distance.” Now that she can drive, it’s much easier. To meet as many people as possible, Grace reached out to them and talked to as many people as she could. Grace is also in Teens for Christ, track, and NHS. Ella Butzine St. Paul, Ixonia Incoming Freshman Worries: Feeling alone, even though you’re on a team.

Enough time for extracurriculars and homework.

Ella was worried that she wouldn’t be able to bond.

“I didn’t know that it only takes two days to feel like close friends,” she said. She also appreciated that the coaches understand that homework needs to come first. Even though managing it all can still be stressful, Ella finds time to be in forensics, drama, golf, STEM, SWE-LL, newspaper, Teens for Christ— and she’ll be in Swing Choir next year too.

“Not many people came from my school, so I didn’t know who I’d hang out with in school.” She quickly got involved in dance, “which is huge,” she says. She also was the wrestling manager. As for her locker, she was pretty sure it wouldn’t open for her, but “I opened it twice and had it down.”

Occasionally it still gives her a bit of trouble, but she reassures us that she knows how to handle it now.

This might seem like a funny answer, but we know you can still worry about the “silly stuff ” anyway. Trevor reassured us that it wasn’t actually too hard to learn the school song. And, the more games you attend, the more you hear it and learn it—and all the fun cheers too! He’s in football as well as pep band.
