Your Direct Advantage
...focus on the one thing needful
Path of Life I remember when, as a 13-year-old kid on a deer hunting trip with my dad, I was allowed to be on my own for the first time. Before we went into the massive Chequamegon National Forest, he gave me some much needed advice: “Remember—stay on the logging trail and you will be just fine. Don’t wander off into the woods, or you can get lost.”
mission Motivated by the love of Jesus, Lakeside Lutheran High School partners with families to educate, encourage, and equip students for life and for eternity. about our federation The Lakeside Federation includes 31 congregations in southcentral Wisconsin extending north to south from Beaver Dam to Janesville and east to west from Oconomowoc to Madison. For the first two days, I was fine and remembered his words of wisdom; however, on the third day, I got bored and wandered just a little ways into the woods. I then saw some deer tracks, so I wandered a little bit more. Before I knew it, I was lost. I thought I knew what I was doing and wouldn’t have any trouble finding my way back, but I was dead wrong. I tried to find the logging trail but soon everything looked the same. I felt alone, scared, and wasn’t sure what I should do or where I should turn. After four hours of wandering and just some dumb luck, I found the path and eventually found my dad. Students at Lakeside Lutheran and our grade schools certainly have those moments in life. There will be times where they may not know where they’re headed, or feel lost trying to find their way in life. It is so helpful to have constant reassurance and direction given to them by their parents and teachers as they find their footing in this world. We not only guide them in the paths of this world, but more importantly, in the path to eternal salvation through Jesus. May God bless our efforts as we give them the one thing that is truly needful.

Your Federation Advantage ...focus on St. Matthew, Oconomowoc
PARTNERS IN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION “Having the Lakeside bus park at our school is big plus in two ways,” says Principal Eric Ziel. “First, it makes transportation easier for parents. Second, it’s a constant visual reminder to all of our families of our connection with LLHS. We want to promote the message that Christian education is a K-12 endeavor!” St. Matt’s strongly supports LLHS with Federation dues, but also keeps the ministry “in front of members through prayers, reports at voters’ meetings, and LLHS guest preachers,” says Ziel, whose father, Willard, was a teacher at LL from 1978–88. “As a school, we also try our best to take part in all of the recruitment-related activities and invite LLHS students and staff into our school. Visits from Mr. Lauber and Taste of Ministry students are big ones.”

A PARTNERSHIP WITH PARENTS • Lakeside provides the opportunity for our children to learn and grow through and with God’s Word each day. ~St. Matthew parent • We chose Lakeside for our family because of the Christian education. For a small school, it offers a diverse number of courses. The teachers are friendly and care about each student. Parents and teens support other parents and teens in so many ways from carpools to sports, music, and all the numerous activities LLHS offers! Lakeside communicates with us so well too! We are so thankful for the blessing of Lakeside!

WARRIORS FROM EARLY ON! “Having a strong partnership makes the choice of high school an easy one, as many students start envisioning themselves as LLHS students early on in grade school,” says Ziel. “I also think the partnership helps us expose kids to good high school role models.” It pays off. For Cardinals headed to LLHS, they are already excited! ♥♥ I am excited for LLHS because of the sports. I can’t wait to play basketball and football at LLHS. I’m going to have lots of fun competing for LLHS! ♥♥ I am excited for the new friends I can make and the new fun experiences I can have at Lakeside. ♥♥ I am excited to attend because I really want to go on the band trips and play football. issue 16 • llhs.org/K-8 • page 3

into colleges, universities, tech schools, into military service and into the workforce. The class of 2018 is no different. Do you ever think about life after grade school? High school? Do you spend time thinking about what you might like to do when you’re all done with school? We interviewed a few of our seniors this year to find out where they’re headed, what their plans and dreams might be, and how Lakeside worked into all that. Maybe you even know some of these faces! How do their plans match up to your dreams?
Samantha DeNoyer
Bethany, Fort Atkinson off to Mankato State University for Nursing (brothers James in 8th grade, Nathan in 6th, Jack in 2nd)
“I thought I hated every science class until I took anatomy junior year and absolutely loved it which made me want to do nursing. Now that I’m taking psychology this year I can’t decide between nursing or psychology. These career paths had never crossed my mind before I took these two classes.” “Trying various things with all the elective classes we get may help you realize what you do or don’t like—and your talents.”
Matthias Winters “Physics class has really made clear to me what engineering will be about, and it makes me excited about my future. Mr. Tracy did a great job of helping us learn while letting us figure it out by ourselves, and projectbased classes like Physics—where grades come from whether assignments “worked” or not—are right up my alley.
St. Luke, Watertown off to Milwaukee School of Engineering & ROTC (brother Issac is 8th grade)
“Freshmen, don’t forget that grades matter from the get-go, but make sure you get involved enough to have the full experience. Don’t hesitate to join something!”
Isaiah Coleman St. Mark, Watertown off to UW–Milwaukee for Film & Cinema
“It isn’t often someone knows right away what they want to pursue careerwise. Since I was little, I’ve always wanted to get involved in film-making, whether it be acting, directing, or writing. With all this in mind, I enrolled in videography, which even further expanded my interest in this career path. After taking Mr. Hackbarth’s videography course, I would say that he really helped spark my interest on the editing side of things. Mrs. Tetzlaff and her Art courses furthered my interest into digging deeper into themes and really looking at film-making as an art.”
“I originally wanted to attend Lakeside because that was where the majority of my friends were going. Once I finally got here, it was a really cool environment. I’ve talked to some friends from other schools and it made me realize how blessed we are at Lakeside to have such great teachers and very respectful students.”
Ashley McLain
St. John, Juneau off to UW–Green Bay for Psychology (sister Kayley is 8th grade)
“Don’t worry about school or making friends. Get involved in the clubs. There are so many great opportunities that Lakeside provides. Take advantage of them.” page 6 • The Lakeside Advantage • 2018 Issue 2
Where are you headed?
...focus on the many ways you can glorify God for life Ashley Fritz
“I came to Lakeside because it was the Lutheran federation high school, but it’s become even more than a Christian high school St. Andrew, Middleton to me. Here teachers genuinely care about our academics off to Wisconsin Lutheran College, Milwaukee and our general well-being. Once students realize this, they understand the rules set in place are out of love with our best for Horticulture/Landscape Architecture interests at heart. The atmosphere is very comfortable. There (Brother Aaron just finished 8th grade) is not one part of me that regrets choosing Lakeside. No one has to worry about being judged for their beliefs because they are mutual between staff, coaches, and students. A really cool thing the girl’s basketball team does is we have devotions before every game that the players write, which relates our faith to the game. It helps clear our minds before games and keep what is really important in perspective.”
Joe Grambsch
Zion, Columbus off to Martin Luther College for Elementary Education (brother Brady in 7th grade)
“My 7th and 8th grade teacher, Mr. Paul Ihde, was the first one to really talk to me about becoming a teacher. My freshman religion class with Pastor Toepel really got me interested in that career.” “Lakeside offered so many different things for me while also still allowing me to grow in my faith. One thing that really sets Lakeside apart is the many opportunities offered, so you can really find what you want to do someday to praise your Lord.”
“Throughout high school and your life you don’t want to look back with regrets. So live your life to the fullest and live your life to glorify God.”
Meghan Splinter
St. Matthew, Oconomowoc off to Waukesha County Tech College for Early Childhood Education (Brother Sam in 6th grade)
“I attended Lakeside because I wanted to get a good Christian education and be surrounded by students that have the same faith that I do. What sets Lakeside apart from other schools is that every day, your faith grows. You get to listen to a devotion and learn about God’s Word every single day.”
Ian Olson
“The class that made me want to purse nursing was Anatomy & Physiology. The human body is so complex and is truly fascinating to study. The main reason I attended Lakeside was to stay strong in my faith by receiving that daily dose of God’s Word. This could be through the devotions that we have everyday, how teachers incorporate God’s Word into our studies, and the various religion classes that are offered. All these things have made me grow in my faith and learn a lot more about God’s Word, and how real life situations will affect me and how to handle them.”
Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel off to Carroll University for Nursing
“Biology at Lakeside got me interested in majoring in it in college. I have to thank the whole faculty for pushing me to my limits and achieving things I never would have imagined.”
Rakesh Tadepalli Eastside, Madison off to UW–LaCrosse for Biology
“My advice for students is to do everything that interests you. Don’t be afraid to try out for a spot on the play, don’t be afraid to go out for soccer, don’t be afraid to do anything. I say that because as a senior, I regret not doing some of the things I know I am capable of doing. I love public speaking, but I never took the opportunity to go into forensics or the play. I only played soccer for two years, and now I miss it more than ever. I never applied for Operation Go [mission trips] because I was afraid that it might interfere with my schedule, but now I regret it so much. I encourage you to do everything you can, because it will be fun.”
