A few weeks ago, in the dead of winter, the electricity suddenly went out in our neighborhood.
He lights it up
In a matter of seconds my family was in complete and total darkness. No TV, no kitchen lights, no small nightlights...just darkness. We slowly felt our way around the house trying to find one of the many flashlights that we had accumulated over the years. After finding 3 flashlights—none of which worked—we finally found one with plenty of juice. What a relief! We had light. We live in a world where many of the things we try to grasp onto during this life turn out to be totally useless in the end. Striving towards athletic success, reaching for academic greatness, or trying to accumulate wealth are common goals for many people. These can be great goals to have; however, just like the flashlights with no juice left when crisis hits, they don't provide the one thing we need. At Lakeside Lutheran High School, we are different from many other high schools. We Educate, Encourage and Equip students—not just for this life—but more importantly, for Eternity. In all of our classes, sports and activities, Christ is the center. Jesus Christ is the one true light we know and need. Keep Him front and center. He will always be a bright light page 2 • The Lakeside leading Advantageus • 2018 Issue 1 salvation. to eternal Steve

Your Instrumental Advantage ...focus on developing your band chops
grade school students from our Federation congregations Each fall, join together for Cadet Band—and get a t-shirt! This is an opportunity to develop musical instrument skills and knowledge, offered to elementary families at no charge by your high school that simply loves its band kids, no matter how old!
Beginners' Band: First-year students practice together for four Saturdays, then hold a short concert to show off their progress for family and friends in the band room after that last Saturday practice (2018: Oct. 13–Nov. 3).
Experienced instrumentalists comprise Cadet Band (along with those interested in color guard) and practice those same Saturday mornings, but they join the Warrior Band for the public Fall Concert. Next November it's Sunday the 4th.
The show is over but we're not done! How about your own marching band? 4-8th graders, check this out: This summer, the Warrior Band wants to host a Summer Cadet Marching Band. This would be your own band with your own banner, as part of our whole Warrior Band program! You will learn the basics of marching in camp and then march in two parades—Lake Mills on June 23 and Watertown on July 4. We need 30-40 band members to make this a reality. Interested? Contact Mr. Pufahl ASAP at gpufahl@llhs.org or 920/648-2321 x1212
(At $100 for the summer, this is a great investment in your musical performance & rhythm skills!)

Each February, Pastor Jim Buske—LL class of '93 and Director at Lighthouse Youth Center in Milwaukee—visits Pastor Clark Schultz's sophomore religion classes to share how Lighthouse reaches out to its community. Buske then offers Warriors opportunities to volunteer for an afternoon. (For those needing extra encouragement, PC counts the visit as an alternative to the final exam!) In this, year 12, they hope to break the 1,000 Warrior-mark. Is that cool or what?
8th grade:
October saw the class of 2022 on campus for the annual Open House. After a pizza supper, parents visited classrooms and heard from several departments while 8th graders played games with LLHS faculty and teens in the gym.
Here are a few reactions from Lakeside students on what this opportunity is like. . . My visit was an unforgettable experience. Those kids showed me how they live in a completely different environment than what I am used to. Even though they whooped me in 2K and basketball, I did manage to squeak out a win in pool. Those kids forever changed how I look at Milwaukee because they aren’t just kids that have just found a place to hang out after school. They are redeemed souls that are gifted in incredible ways that I can’t express. I pray for each one of them on a daily basis because I can see the Lord working through them, and I want that light to shine as bright as possible. ...I liked the games with the kids and talking to them... seeing how excited they are learning and talking about Jesus! It was refreshing— going to a Christian school all my life, I often take hearing God’s Word for granted. It helped me to get more excited with hearing God’s Word... page 6 • The Lakeside Advantage • 2018 Issue 1
I played Just Dance on the Wii with Deandre, and I was terrible. He was laughing at me the whole time. I wasn’t even embarrassed because his laugh was contagious. ...a wonderful experience. my freinds and I met young Christian men and ladies who haven’t had the same privileges as we. Even if we come from different backgrounds, we are all the same at the core. We are all humans that need God’s grace and forgiveness. It highlighted the importance of reaching out to everyone no matter the costs, because saving a soul is priceless. It’s a great reminder that we are all one in Christ. ...While we were playing games, I realized something: I need to work on my Monopoly skills. ...eye-opening experience... raised so many intriguing questions for me. I have this new love for spending time doing work like that. Before I always thought how there’s people out there who are really good at it so I don’t need to bother. I quickly realized that isn’t true. DeShawn made my visit there pretty memorable. He was kind and made me feel welcome. He was super good at Tenzi and totally had me fooled that he had
no clue how to play, but shortly after went on like an 8-game winning streak. Sitting and having that devotion, I observed how some of them seemed so curious, and most really had never heard any of that. That took some getting used to because all I could think of was how I knew all about everything Pastor was saying . . . but I have been taught that all my life and they haven’t. It may take time to show them that difference between having fun and buckling down to listen to God’s Word, but that’s the cool part. You are helping someone...giving them a better outlook on life and I love that. I love the work that they do at Lighthouse and I hope one day I can make a difference like that. ...incredible...so much fun to see the Holy Spirit at work. They were so excited about learning about the Lord. I’ve never seen kids that excited about learning about Jesus before. It was fun to be able to play games and learn about their lives.
Congrats to Carter Huber (Zion, Columbus) who won Beats headphones, and Trevor Holzhueter (St. John, Waterloo) and Alyssa Reinke (TSL) who won LL UnderArmour backpacks! Thanks, Jefferson WalMart and Twice is Nice Resale Store for sponsoring the prizes!
4th grade:
We had plenty of reason to give thanks in November as the halls were again alive with the sound of 4th graders. Students from 16 Federation schools participated in student life. Using virtual reality viewers—AKA Google Cardboard—they traveled through the ocean and joined in iconic scenes from New York, such as being up on a beam during the building of the Empire State Building (don’t look down!). They finished with a Cedar Point rollercoaster ride. They wrapped up their campus visit as participants our Fit 4 Life class, learning about timed sprints, dot drills, and the speed ladder. They love to burn off that energy, and we love to see it!
7th grade:
In January, 200+ 7th graders joined the faculty on campus for a morning of what it’s like as a LLHS student through nine mini-classes, followed by fellowship with pizza and a roller-skating outing. It’s a fun day to imagine the future!
My Lighthouse experience was really good...truly fun. I would come back again even if it doesn’t involve getting out of an exam. —2017 LLHS sophomore reflections
