Your Future Advantage

...focus on our children's dreams A message for parents from Mr. Steve Lauber Reach him at slauber@llhs.org or 920-648-2321 x2218

When I grow up, I wanna be... As parents of grade school children, we may hear about the dreams and aspirations of our precious babies. It can be exciting—yet scary—to think about what direction our children will go as adults. High school is when students not only dream about the future; it's where their future begins. For many of our teens, the skills they learn here will be the tools they will eventually use in their careers. Wrestling with complex math and science calculations, fine-tuning speaking skills, developing computer, welding, cooking and artistic skills, learning to speak different languages, becoming more confident in God’s Word—just to name a few—all help our kids choose directions for their future that will hopefully keep them fulfilled and happy throughout their lives. As parents, we want the best for our kids in all that they do. During these molding and shaping years in our children’s lives, however, we also see that teens are on their own more than ever. Even though we may want to be, many parents don’t have as much involvement in their student’s life in high school. Our kids are finding new friends and new interests. They’re finding out who they are and who they want to become. They are now young adults. There is no better blessing, then, than to continue to learn surrounded with God’s Word. At Lakeside, our number one priority is strengthening the faith of our young adults. Being daily with teachers, staff and other students who have the same faith in Jesus as their Savior is a solid foundation to build the remainder of their lives on. So, dear children, become anything you want to be. Keep God as your rock and foundation in life, and He will direct your paths.

Your STEM Advantage

...focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Math Kids get asked about 10,000 times what they want to be when they grow up... Maybe you dream of being a doctor, toy designer or veterinarian. You might think about building bridges, designing video games, or developing apps. Could your goal be a dietician, farmer, or an astronomer? Maybe you want to become an aircraft technician, a pilot, or even an astronaut. At Lakeside, no matter your answer, we have classes and organizations that will get you ready—and many of them involve STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Math) courses. Is CODING your thing? Worldwide, the 1st week in December is "Computer Science Education Week." Each year, freshmen take part in the Hour of Code and learn that producing content on a computer is just as fun as consuming content! >> Maybe you like AVIATION.Thanks to our MATH courses, you can get ready for all the computations you’ll need to make as a pilot. Our SHOP classes will get you ready to be an aircraft technician. << Senior Ethan Miller received his pilot’s license. Here he is on the runway at Watertown Municipal Airport. What if you want to be a TEACHER? Thanks to our SCIENCE classes, you can grow up to be a Science Teacher. Here Mr. Damon Tracy (LLHS ‘83) teaches our 2nd grade visitors about physics. >>

LLHS begins STEM Academy Beginning in the 2018-19 school year, your Lakeside Lutheran will offer a STEM Academy. What's that? you might wonder! By creating a STEM Academy within Lakeside, interested students are able to study STEM courses more in-depth while still taking ADVANTAGE of Lakeside’s great Christian education. The first course will be Introduction to Engineering Design, taught by Mr. Drew Williams, LLHS Technology Director. He is a certified PLTW instructor for the Project Lead the Way activity-, project-, and problembased (APB) engineering curriculum (www.pltw.org).

For more information, attend one of our STEM Parent Information Nights. These meetings are designed for parents of incoming 8th graders; however, parents of students of any age, from younger grades to juniors in high school, and/or other interested people may attend to learn more about the Academy, ask questions, and be introduced to the application process. Attend either evening: Wednesday, November 1 at 6:30 p.m. or Thursday, November 9 at 6:30 p.m. See LLHS STEM site for more info: tinyurl.com/LLHSSTEM contact awillems@llhs.org with questions! issue 14 • llhs.org/K-8 • page 3

PARTNERS IN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION “Christian education is a lifelong endeavor. At Peace, we help parents see that Lakeside allows families to continue building on the foundation that Christian education provided during their elementary years,” says Principal Raymond. “Also, as parents see the benefits of 'investing' in their child's Christian education in their elementary years, it makes it easier for them to see the benefits of investing in their child's secondary Christian education as well. Over the past five years, 77 percent of our 8th graders have gone on to Lakeside as freshmen. When you include those who went to Luther Prep, over 86% of our 8th graders have continued on with Christian education as freshmen!”

A BLESSING TO STUDENTS AND THEIR FUTURES Principal Raymond continues: "The families of our church and school see the benefits as our students go on to Lakeside and become leaders in their school, congregations, and communities. Our students have become walking billboards in the promotion of Christian education." "Many of our students are excited about making new Christian friends in high school, and the variety of extracurricular activities that Lakeside offers. They are also excited that Lakeside provides a safe atmosphere to learn."

A BLESSING TO FAMILIES We chose Lakeside for our family because high school is a busy time for teenagers, and it is comforting to know that our children will be surrounded by Christian friends and mentors during this period of their lives. —Cathy Gresens, mom of August ('20) & Jada ('21)

Topics for the 2017 STEM Camp included "Catapults," "Building the Strongest Bridge," and "Computer Programming and Circuit Boards." Thanks to the area STEM instructors, including Andrea Dorn (St. Stephen, Beaver Dam), Phil Dretske (LLHS), Hannah Hackbarth (St. John, Waterloo), Tim Kassulke (St. Mark, Watertown), Jennifer Krauklis (LLHS), Shelley Meyers (St. Matthew, Oconomowoc) and LLHS STEM Academy Director Andrew Willems.

And of course we had a blast developing athletic skills at our annual Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Football and Distance Running Camps as well. See these and more pics at the same galley link as above.

Warrior Summer Band is open to students currently in grades 8–12. The most common way to participate is by marching and playing an instrument. Students can also participate as a member of the Honor Guard (banner/U.S. flag, etc.) or Color Guard (flags/rifles).

In addition to learning valuable musical and rhythm skills, mental toughness and discipline, teens in summer band are blessed with many opportunities to witness their Christian faith. Countless teens have shared that some of their favorite high school memories are made during the summer band trips. June 30–July 15, 2018: East Coast Trip! Highlights to include: Canada | Rhode Island | New York City | DC area Contact Director Mr. Pufahl at gpufahl@llhs.org with questions.
