Your Quotable Advantage

...focus on what's best

A message for parents from Mr. Steve Lauber. Reach him at slauber@llhs.org or 920-648-2321 x2218

Christmas is a magical time of year for many things. Decorations, music, cookies, snow— and, of course, for students and teachers, No School! But one of the most entertaining parts of Christmas has to be the movies that we watch during the month of December. Along with those movies come some memorable quotes from our favorite movie characters: “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” Buddy the Elf in Elf mission Motivated by the love of Jesus, Lakeside Lutheran High School partners with families to educate, encourage, and equip students for life and for eternity. about our federation The Lakeside Federation includes 31 congregations in southcentral Wisconsin extending north to south from Beaver Dam to Janesville and east to west from Oconomowoc to Madison.

“I want an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle.” Ralphie in A Christmas Story “Look, Daddy. Teacher says every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.” Zuzu Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life However, one of the greatest Christmas movie quotes ever, more than 50 years old, comes from A Charlie Brown Christmas. It’s Linus, telling Charlie Brown what the true meaning of Christmas is:

“And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not: I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

That is very simply the message that Lakeside Lutheran High School has the privilege to proclaim every day with students—the great news that Jesus came to this earth as a baby to become our Savior, and because of that, through faith, we all will inherit eternal life in heaven. May we base our hope, our lives, our future—our everything—on what happened over 2,000 years ago that Christmas Eve. A Savior was born for you and for me. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Lakeside Lutheran High School.

Steve

What an awesome turnout and support for our first Volley for Hope night! The total raised for Tomorrow’s Hope was $3,042. We rocked the safety green T-shirts, didn't we? Thanks to all of the grade school volleyball players who showed up to cheer for the Warriors!

The annual BLAC volleyball tourney is always a blast seeing all the young talent that may help future Warrior teams continue their success. (Did you hear? The Warrior volleyball team earned a berth at the State tournament this year!) Congrats to the A teams taking home some hardware: Div. 1: 1st, TSL, Watertown; 2nd, Peace, Sun Prairie; 3rd, St. Paul, Ixonia Division 2: 1st, St. John, Waterloo; 2nd, St. Matthew, Janesville; 3rd, St. Paul, Lake Mills

LLHS & Wisconsin Parental Choice program (WPCP) Your LLHS has joined the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program (WPCP), and we welcomed our first successful applicants this school year. Our General Board recently decided to open 70 seats for 2017-18, broken down as: two seats each for juniors and seniors, 25 for sophomore students and 41 seats for incoming freshmen. These numbers include one seat for each of the 25 students already in the program this school year. For students selected to the WPCP, families receive a voucher from the state that pays tuition in full. Eligibility essentially comes down to meeting residency and income requirements. The open application period for the statewide WPCP last school year ran from February 1 through April 20, and we expect a similar time frame for 2017-18. Students entering 9th grade in fall of 2017 and those transferring from a public high school or another choice school at any grade level are eligible to apply for a voucher. Find out more, stay current and get a hotlink when the application window opens:

llhs.org/choice (A Spanish version is available through the same link.) what does this mean for your family?

If your student is new to Lakeside and you have a need for financial aid, apply for both the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program (if you meet the income criteria of this state-run program) and for LLHS Financial Aid. See these criteria and find links to LL finaid under “Admissions” on www.llhs.org Please call the Lakeside office (920-648-2321) or contact Principal James Grasby (jgrasby@llhs.org) with questions about the program.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our rock decorating contest. All the rocks are on display in and around Lakeside this first semester, reminding us that We put a weight limit on the rocks, with a 10 lb max. The heaviest rock was from Kendra Blake. Congrats to all the winning entries, chosen based on criteria including creativity and visual appeal. All K–8 winners received prizes such as Warrior wear, and one was randomly chosen from all winning entries to receive a $200 tuition credit. Two adult winners received Warrior Wear.

We’ve taken the best part of Lakeside concessions

and turned it into a contest! On Sunday, February 19, 2017, during the grade school basketball tournament, we’ll have eight Lakeside students participate in a one-minute donut-eating exhibition!

We need you to guess . . .

(PLEASE don’t try this yourself...unless your parents or coach says it’s OK!) Contest Information & Rules: Enter the contest by 1) guessing a total number of donuts that six LLHS teens can eat in one minute, 2) providing identifying info, and 3) submitting entry by dropping off entry in marked boxes in the office or other designated locations on the LLHS campus at 231 Woodland Beach Rd. Lake Mills, or by e-mailing required info to contest@llhs.org. Identities of the teens participating will not be announced beforehand. Contest will take place Sunday afternoon, February 19, 2017, in the east gymnasium, at a time to be announced that weekend. Guesses must be in by 5 pm on Saturday, February 18, 2017 to be eligible for prizes. LLHS is not responsible for lost or misdirected entries. Contest open to students in 2016-17 grades K–8. One entry per student. The entry guess that is closest to the actual number eaten without exceeding the number will win Warrior wear and $200 in tuition credit applicable toward first semester of attendance at Lakeside; 3 runners-up will also receive prizes such as Warrior wear. Prizes not transferable. Winners are not required to be present to win; parents will then be notified by e-mail or phone. Children of LLHS employees are ineligible for prizes.

8TH GRADE OPEN HOUSE! This year we welcomed 235 students and their parents to our open house. They came from almost all of the federation schools. After eating 73 pizzas, future Warriors played dodgeball and won awesome Lakeside prizes while parents learned about classes, extracurriculars and tuition options.

Why are you looking forward to attending LLHS next fall? It begins with Computer Essentials freshman year, & can continue with computer programming, maintenance, biz apps & web design. Videography offers one of the most advanced, wellequipped high school studios in the state!

"...all the different options of classes— especially computer programming."

absolutely!

Warrior mathletes have taken 1st place in 32 of the last 35 Capitol Conference Meets. And band? Your LLHS doesn't just cultivate players—our program supplies our WELS high schools' band teachers!

"Options! From FFA to Metals to Woods, you can do lots of things."

Lakeside's a good school and we get to hear God’s Word every day,

From chapel to classes to daily devotions, religion isn’t just taught, it's modeled and practiced. Faith grows at Lakeside.

Your LLHS is the only parochial school in Wisconsin with an FFA chapter. Nine of our 35+ Warrior FFA students traveled to Indianapolis for the national conference in October.

"Lakeside is the only school I really like."

There are lots of great options for education in our area, and we are thrilled when kids think Lakeside is #1!

I’m excited about everything—especially math courses...and band! Can I add band to my list?

It’s fun!

From Homecoming, dances, and February spirit week, to a religion classroom filled with superhero paraphernalia, we think Lakeside is fun too!

The top student prize went to Logan Reich from St. John, Jefferson, when he won some Beats headphones, donated in part by Wal-Mart in Jefferson.

Your Parental Advantage focus on confident choices

PARENTS OPEN UP ON WHY THEY CHOSE LAKESIDE LUTHERAN

Lakeside prepares students to share the gospel in whatever their calling may be. Just one example is by involvement in summer mission trips, organized under Operation GO, a program that sends various teams to GO around the country and share the gospel!

“Nick is looking at choices other than being a pastor or teacher. There are so many options at Lakeside,” said Mark. "It’s a WELS school that we want to be part of."

With an average ACT score of 25.1, Lakeside results rank in the top 5% of the state. 86% of AP test-takers score high enough to receive college credit. Beginning in 2017, Lakeside will have three AP classes. We have a 100% graduation rate.

The Slonaker family is choosing Lakeside to “continue Morgan’s religious education,” said Yvonne. Lon summed it up: “It’s awesome.” He added, “It really is. Honestly, we chose LL because of Christian education and because the education is one of the highest quality in the state.”

Renee is a 1988 Lakeside grad who shared, “Lakeside was our 1st choice. I’ve been bringing Emily here since she was born!”

We love having alum come back to campus, and certainly are privileged to have second—even third—generation students among our families. You are a walking advertisement for how a Lakeside education prepares students for any career, such as Renee's position as Director of Communications for the UW-Madison College of Engineering. (We love hearing from alum too! Share with us at llhs.org/update-us)

Brian and Rebecca Neumann, St. Paul, Ixonia

“You come here once and you feel what the environment is. It is family. It’s an extension of how you raise your kid,” says Brian. “Plus, the reputation kids have coming out of here-they are set up for success.” Rebecca is a 1995 alum and was set on Lakeside for her kids too. “Lakeside has a solid Christian education, that’s the main reason,” she says. “But the size of the school, the smaller class sizes, and the Christian atmosphere is all part of it.” The Neumanns, who have four sons ranging in age from a sophomore to a kindergartner, have advice for those considering Lakeside: budget and prepare ahead of time. When their oldest was in first grade, they began setting aside. “It’s easier to pay for four years over the course of 30 years,” says Brian. In addition, they started taking advantage of the Scrip program a few years before their kids were enrolled. For details on how this program can help with tuition, see llhs.org/scrip issue 11 • llhs.org/K-8 • page 7
