For me, one of my favorite activities during summer is crappie and bass fishing up in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

One of the hidden lakes I fish doesn’t have any boat landings or docks, which means only canoes and rowboats can be used. In order for me to get in and out of the boat safely and without getting wet—or even worse, sucked into the black muck on the edge of the lake—is to find a rock that I can step on which allows me to get onto dry land.

There are many large rocks on the edge of this lake, but there is one that I use every year. It is flat, dry and doesn’t have a lot of “water slime” on it. Using loose rocks, slippery rocks or rocks that are too small will eventually lead to a slip or even a tumble into the lake.

Isn't this like life? Everyday we are faced with trying to find our footing here on earth. Some people try to get a grip on life by choosing to focus on money, looks, jobs, friends, health, or a variety of other "rocks" as their firm foundation. But we all know that there is no certainty with any of those things. Looks eventually slip away, we can lose friends, or money, or health...and then somehow find ourselves flat on our face in the muck of life.

What a blessing that we Christians have one sure and steady Rock that we can put our trust in. As the things of this life eventually let us down, we know that through Jesus, and the promises we have in Scripture, we can be sure that if we stand on “Christ as our Rock,” we will never slip in what truly matters, and we will never find ourselves underwater.

At Lakeside Lutheran, our task is to educate, encourage and equip students to stand firm in this life as we await our eternal home.

The LLHS Warrior Marching Band summer program, begun in the 1970s, has seen thousands of students travel around Wisconsin, the U.S. and Canada, performing in hundreds of parades. The Warrior Band has won numerous awards over the years, including 1st place at the prestigious Calgary Stampede parade in Alberta, Canada—the competition it's headed to this summer again! Recent summers included trips to St. Louis, Washington D.C. and the East Coast, and Traverse City, MI, for the National Cherry Festival, where the band took 1st in class at the Cherry Royale Parade in 2015.

Warrior Summer Band is open to students in grades 8–12.

The most common way to participate is with an instrument; however, students can also join by being part of the Honor Guard (banner/U.S. flag, etc.) or Color Guard (flags).

In addition to learning challenging music and rhythm skills, mental toughness and discipline, teens in summer band are blessed with many opportunities to witness their Christian faith, as well as making some of the best high school memories with friends, sightseeing and just being together.

Says Rebecca (Zastrow '95) Neumann, current Warrior band mom, band and colorguard member herself from 1991–95:

“I treasure the many activities I was involved with during my Lakeside years, from sports teams to A Cappella, but being a part of the band trips is at the top of my list of awesome high school memories. It's the best!"

winning entries Thanks to all who entered the coloring contest in the prior edition of the Advantage magazine. The campus hallway where they're all posted this summer is a beautiful burst of color! Congrats to all the winning entries, chosen based on criteria including creativity and visual appeal. All K–8 winners received prizes such as Warrior wear, and one was randomly chosen from all winning entries to receive a $200 tuition credit. Two adult winners received Warrior Wear.

Rock Painting/Decorating Contest Don't hide under a rock this summer—decorate one!

Calling all families in search of a fun summer project: our latest contest is open to students in K–8 during the 2016–17 school year (adults are again also welcome to enter). Everyone is a winner when rocks are placed on display in and around Lakeside during the first semester of this coming school year. Prizewinners will be announced from each of the four grade school categories, and Warrior prizes will be awarded to two winners in each of the following groups:

K-2 / 3-4 / 5-6 / 7-8 A grand prizewinner from K–8 will also be chosen to receive a $200.00 LLHS tuition credit.

Guidelines:

• Use paint, permanent markers, glitter or any other “rock accessories” that will help you design a unique rock that highlights the idea: "Christ is the Rock of our Lives" • Somewhere on the rock, make reference to Lakeside Lutheran High School (a tool that God uses to help achieve His purpose).

• Choose a rock that the student can safely lift and that can stand on its own without the aid of an artificial stand (10 pounds max, give or take).

• Entry must be one piece (i.e., entry cannot be a collection of unattached rocks).

• Write or affix 1) student's name, 2) grade in 2016-17 and 3) current school/city attending on the bottom of the rock.

• Deliver it to Lakeside Lutheran High School by September 15, 2016.

Lake Mills. Entries will be celebrated in the next edition of the Advantage magazine and on the LLHS campus and/or in the building. LLHS is not responsible for identifying information becoming separated from the entry.

Contest open to students in 2016-17 grades K–8 and adults. One entry per person. Two winners from each K–8 level will be chosen based on criteria including representation of theme, creativity and visual appeal. All K–8 winners receive prizes such as Warrior wear, and one will receive a $200 tuition credit applicable toward first semester of attendance at Lakeside, chosen randomly from all winning entries. Another in a series of current and former Warrior parent responses to a survey that asked why they chose Lakeside, how they handle the obstacles of extra cost and time, what they appreciate about LLHS and whether they have any tips for others wanting to make a commitment to secondary Christian education.

To do all we can...to help our kids prepare for this life and the life to come Jon and Cindy Natvig, members at Holy Cross in Madison, began their tenure as Lakeside parents in 2007, when daughter Emily was a freshman. Along with Emily's graduation in 2011, they have seen son Andrew graduate in 2014, while younger son Aaron will be a junior this fall. After almost a dozen years of tuition and driving from Cottage Grove, here's what they had to say:

Why did you choose Lakeside Lutheran as the school your children would attend?

There are so many things in this world that try to pull our children away from their faith. We chose Lakeside because they work with parents to strengthen our children’s faith and provide them with the tools to stand firm against the world’s temptations.

Can you name all the Lutheran elementary schools (LES) that are included in the Lakeside Lutheran federation? Some of the logos we have for grade schools have the names right on them, but what city are they from? In future editions, it's our plan to feature our awesome federated grade schools—what they're like, what makes them so awesome, how they partner with your LLHS in carrying the torch of Christian education. Have some ideas about what we should include when it's your school's turn? Let us know!

Mr. Lauber wrapped up another year of sharing the Lakeside Lutheran advantage with stops at federation grade schools, even getting his photo taken with some of the winners of the 2015-16 "passport" program. The Jefferson Wal-Mart again made the the iPod Touch possible for St. Stephen Beaver Dam 3rd grader Kathryn Schulz, the random winner from all “5 stamp” entries. Aaron Fritz (6th grade, Westside Christian) and Jackson Gleesing (1st grade, St. Paul Lake Mills) were the $500 tuition voucher winners from all those who had their passports stamped at 10 home events and turned them in. page 6 • The Lakeside Advantage • 2016 Issue 2

Lakeside is a serious financial investment that can be a major obstacle for some families.

Do you have any words of wisdom for other families on how they can make it “happen”?

Start thinking today about what you want for your child’s high school experience.

8th grade will come before you know it! If you want to do everything possible to help your child stay firm in his or her faith but you’re not sure if you can afford Lakeside, talk to someone at the school. They can help your family make attending Lakeside a reality.

Any words of wisdom or reassurance for families contemplating Lakeside as a choice?

Many families worry about the drive and the cost of tuition. Carpools are a blessing and help students and families get to know each other and support each other through these sometimes bumpy high school years. As for the cost, sometimes we have to make sacrifices to invest in our child’s education. Those sacrifices are a small price to pay to do all we can as parents to help our kids prepare for this life and the life to come.

From a Forever Warrior family: Why LLHS?

As our children have gone off to college, the military and now the "real" world, they have had their faith challenged in many ways that we as their parents never experienced at those ages. The foundation of faith that was cultivated on a daily basis at Lakeside is undoubtedly a major reason that they were prepared to defend their faith as they left Lakeside, and as they continue to be active in their churches today.

What do you still appreciate about LLHS?

Jesus is at the center of everything that happens at Lakeside. All of the faculty and staff share a common faith with us. God’s Word drives all decisions that are made. As an added benefit, Lakeside did an outstanding job of preparing our children academically.

What do you especially appreciate about Lakeside?

We appreciate the teachers who go above and beyond to encourage students and help them find their way. Having godly staff and teachers available to mentor our kids is such a blessing as they begin to make their own way through life. They seem to listen better to words of wisdom from a caring teacher than advice from mom and dad.

Way to rock the numbers, Mathletes!

Breaking another participation record, 15 federation schools sent 300 mathletes in grades 5-8 to compete in the LLHS Math Meet on April 27. LL math teacher Mr. Hackbarth and all of LLHS share in the elementary math excitement that this event adds to our campus—a place where math really does rock!
