Another in a series of current and former Lakeside parent responses to a recent survey that asked why they chose Lakeside, how they handle the obstacles of extra cost and time, what they appreciate about LLHS and whether they have any tips for others wanting to make a commitment to secondary Christian education.

Are you smarter than a chicken?

We don’t have to worry...

I have come to realize throughout the years that chickens are actually pretty smart. As little chicks, they learn almost everything from the adult chickens in the barnyard.

They learn when the farmer comes out to feed them, and where he will scatter their food. They learn to be aware of their surroundings and run for cover in the bushes or barn if they see even a shadow of a hawk fly by in the air.

Why did you choose Lakeside Lutheran for your children?

We want to help reinforce our children’s faith through their high school years any way we can, and Lakeside helps by offering a faithbased education where we don’t have to worry about whether what is being taught is in conflict with God’s word.

They learn to never leave the barnyard, where they know they are much safer with the protection of the farmer and other barnyard animals. When nighttime comes, they learn to roost up high, so predators can’t easily get at them. In many important aspects, chickens sure seem to be above average intelligent animals.

We too have a similar “barnyard” given to us by God on this earth. He provides us with food, shelter, and most importantly, the assurance of eternal life for those who have faith in Jesus as their Savior. And in the same way, just like chicks, children learn from adults how to survive as Christians in this ever-changing world.

Mr. Lauber raises chickens in his backyard in Lake Mills, and likes to think he’s smarter than his chickens and his dogs.

Many of us send our children to Christian grade schools that teach the basic truths of God’s Word. Our pastors remind us every Sunday about God’s love and protection. Finally, during one of the most challenging—even dangerous—times for our young adults, Lakeside Lutheran High School is there to continue to help nurture those precious souls into Christian adults, ready for whatever the world holds for them.

The outside world is full of spiritual dangers at every turn in our lives. Satan hovers over us, trying to swoop down and take us away from our Savior. But we have a God that gives us the promises of His Word, just as he gives us opportunities to nurture our faith, and the faith of our children.

Whether we’re young or old, we need to remember to hold tight to the protection of the promises that are given us in the Bible.

Then one day, we and all believers will be in the eternal green pastures of Heaven.

Do you have any words of wisdom for other families on how they can make it “happen”?

We started saving years ahead with a pre-tax ESA (education savings account) in a Coverdell account through Thrivent Financial. Any words of encouragement or reassurance for other parents?

Early on, we wondered how our son would handle the new experience, and it’s been great to see our child flourish and hear him say that he loves his school! It’s been a blessing to find how caring the entire staff have been – including teachers, the Extended Learning Center staff, coaches, the administration, and even other Lakeside families.

Mr. Lauber had a great time again this year, meeting hundreds, even thousands of elementary students and sharing the advantage that is Lakeside Lutheran High School. Through the generosity of several donors, including WalMart in Jefferson, he also had a blast making a few kids especially happy as the winners of the 2014-15 name drawings. At left, Aaron Fritz (Westside Christian) had his name drawn from the “Hello Mr. Lauber” fishbowl at the Spring Play Day and won an iPod Touch. Julie Koch (TSL Watertown) was the iPod Touch winner from all “5 stamp” “passport” entries, and Katie Wagner (St. John Waterloo) and Grace Cody (St. John Juneau) were $500 tuition voucher winners from all those who had their passports stamped at 10 home events and turned them in to Mr. Lauber (see back page for the 2015-16 passport).

Summertime at your LLHS features the future!

How will your light shine?

Classes may be in recess, but campus is often still a hive of activity, and many of those busy buzzing around aren’t even Warriors bees yet! So far on campus we’ve seen basketball camps for both boys and girls for those going into grades 4–9, soccer camp for grades 4–9, and of course, band camp! By the time you read this, we will have had distance running, non-padded football and volleyball camps as well. Let’s not forget open mats for wrestling! Can you find yourself on this page? Maybe, maybe not, right? We saw so much awesome talent at our summer camps this year, we’re confident the future is bright for all kinds of Warriors sports. But do you ever think about all the other ways you can be a Warrior who lets your Jesus-light shine?

Even more awesome than the basketball playing that night last spring is stuff like what’s described about our Warriors in the letter we received after the game (read it at right >>>)

Incoming Freshmen Percussionists

If you follow Warrior sports at all, you probably heard what a whirlwind season our Lady Warrior basketball players had this past school year. Heading into what would be their last game in playoffs, they were unbeaten the entire season with a 24–0 record. One area newspaper wrote about that last game this way: “The atmosphere felt like a State championship game and the play matched it” (Daily Union, 3/2/15). We’re excited to see what the team will come up with this coming season, as they approach the 15th anniversary of the girls’ state championship in 2001. Will you be a part of this exciting future as a Warrior?

All of our Warriors are special, no doubt about it, whether you’re a shooting star or whether you don’t know the difference between a dribble and a travel. Here are some reminders about some of the other ways you can be a part of our amazing battalion of Warriors—and this is just during basketball season!

Principal Grasby received this message the week after the Lady Warriors’ heartbreaking regional final loss (to the eventual state champs) in an otherwise unbeaten 2014–15 basketball season: “I was a spectator at Saturday night’s basketball game. I have to say, I’m not a basketball fan.

I was there to support my niece and it was the first game I attended this year. Swimming and a pool is my comfort zone.

Your team played a great game.

I know it’s obviously not the way you hoped it would end.

I believe your team and fan base handled themselves with grace, sportsmanship and style that night. I wish the scoreboard could reflect points for that because I believe you won that hands down.

Your school handled themselves the way I would want all of my own athletes to conduct themselves. Respect the opponent, respect each other, and respect the game.

I just wanted you to know it didn’t go unnoticed.

Congrats on a job well done!”

A new school year means a new passport!

This fall Mr. Lauber will be dropping off new (and smaller) passports at the grade schools for all K–8 students. When you come to Lakeside-hosted, high school events here on the LLHS campus, bring your passport and look for the stamp table (usually by the ticket table). Not only do you get free admission (some events are free anyway), but after 5 stamps, you win a T-shirt, and your name goes into a drawing for an iPod Touch. After 10 stamps, your name goes into a drawing for 1 of 2 $500 LLHS scholarships.

Look for this opportunity at high school concerts, plays or varsity home games—we love to see you at Lakeside Lutheran! Parents, if your K–8 student doesn’t receive one at school, feel free to ask at the stamp table.
