Same degree, different education

It looks the same…but it isn’t!

Students return to school for a new year. On the surface, schools look the same. They offer core classes in English, mathematics, science, and social studies. In middle schools and high schools, there are elective courses. This is also true of Lakeside Lutheran.

about our federation The Lakeside Federation includes 31 congregations in southcentral Wisconsin extending north to south from Beaver Dam to Janesville and east to west from Oconomowoc to Madison.

Why is Christian education different? It is how the individual is viewed. Other forms of education assume that the person is innately good. That goodness is the foundation of learning and achievement. It’s all about the person and his achievement to his own glory. There is no limit. If she can dream it, she can do it.

mission Lakeside Lutheran High School is committed to assisting parents and area WELS/ELS congregations in nurturing the faith of our students through a Christ-centered education that emphasizes the grace of God in Christ and lives of Christian service in the home, the church and society.

Lakeside’s mission is dedicated to the glory of God on whom alone we are dependent for all blessings and is carried out in response to his love for us.

Christian education views each student for what he or she is: a fallen sinner. There is no inborn goodness. Achievement is not within the person. Rather, it is God’s gift that he uniquely blesses. It’s not about the person. It’s about God who first gives that talent and then blesses it to glorify his name. That’s why the Christian rightly thanks God for what the world calls accomplishment. The Christian knows that God enables him to learn and excel. He confidently knows and believes, “I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength” [Philippians 4:13].

The Lakeside Lutheran Advantage is published 3x annually and distributed free of charge to our students, families, future families and friends. Please pass on this copy to the benefit of others.

It looks the same…but it isn’t. On the surface, Lakeside’s education appears similar to education offered elsewhere. However, closer inspection reveals the difference. Christian education is based on the knowledge of and trust in God who loves sinners and redeems them through his Son’s precious blood.

Another 8th grade open house this past October 28...another year of fun and information: we were privileged to host 230 freshmen and their parents from all but one of our federation schools.

The parents went to classes and the kids dodged some balls while scoring some fun Warrior prizes. Congrats to Jackson Stake from Eastside, Madison (left), our iPod winner this year.

Next year’s open house is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27.

Maybe you’ll etch LLHS in the snow, or make yourself into a Warrior snow angel. Maybe you’ll build a whole snow fort with Warrior colors flying from your highest turret. Contest open to students in 2014-15 grades K–8. One entry per person. Three winners each receive $200 tuition credit applicable toward first semester of attendance at Lakeside: two chosen from all accepted entries based on photo quality, creativity, inclusion of Lakeside element, and general sense of fun, one a random selection from all accepted entries. Prizes not transferable. Deadline to enter is February 28, 2015; winners’ parents first notified by e-mail or phone.

Children of LLHS employees are ineligible for prizes. Lakeside is not responsible for misdirected or lost entries. Acceptability of photos at the sole discretion of judges.

Students in PC’s sophomore religion class have the opportunity to write personal essays that are then submitted to the “Teen Ministry” column in our synod’s Forward in Christ magazine.

Lakeside Lutheran is always proud when one of our own makes it into print in national competition.

The current issue is one such example, and it’s a great reminder for our families of what the teenage years of Christian education can mean for our maturing Christians, both now and for the future.

Second in a series of current and former Lakeside parent responses to a recent survey that asked why they chose Lakeside, how they handle the obstacles of extra cost and time, what they appreciate about LLHS and whether they have any tips for others wanting to make a commitment to secondary Christian education.

Lakeside isn’t some euphoric place...

Why did you choose Lakeside Lutheran as the school your children would attend?

We knew that our children would attend a Lutheran high school. We just didn’t know which one, as that would likely be determined by where the National Guard had us stationed at the time. When I accepted a job in Madison, we chose our city based on the high school, not the other way around. Living in the Madison area, we had a choice of LLHS or LPS. We chose LLHS because we see LPS as a prep school, not a high school, and at the time didn’t see a strong interest in the ministry in any of our children.

Lakeside is a serious financial investment, and that fact can be a major obstacle for some families.

Do you have any words of wisdom for other families on how they can make it “happen”?

Trust in the Lord. The money will be there. I know that’s easy to say and not something people want to hear when they are unconvinced that they can make it happen. We have skimped here and there on things because sending the kids to LLHS is a priority. If Christian education isn’t a priority, it will be hard to convince people that it is possible. My wife got a job in the kitchen and voluntarily took on the Scrip program to make it work.

You have to be willing to sacrifice to help build a life-long foundation of faith in your children.

What else do you appreciate about Lakeside?

Lakeside is not some euphoric place where the kids are always singing hymns and coloring rainbows. They are still teenagers who are tempted by the devil constantly as they race toward adulthood. They still do stupid things that kids do.

However, I know for a fact that at Lakeside, my kids will grow in their faith, not have to defend it. I know that they won’t be told that things are “normal” or “acceptable” when they are clearly not. They won’t be told that they are oldfashioned, bigoted, or close minded if they don’t agree with things like abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, or if they openly talk about their faith. They won’t see girls denigrating themselves by dressing like tramps at prom. They will see parents of past, current, and future students who are invested in the school, from offering financial support to raking the yard in the spring. They will hear God’s word EVERY DAY, even on days when we get so busy or distracted that we sinfully don’t give God time at our home.

Lakeside helps my children build a strong foundation of faith that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Sure, I could do that myself with home devotion and through our church. But by building that foundation WITH Lakeside, the foundation is made stronger—and my goal is for my children to be the strongest Christians possible when they enter the “real world.”
