Lakeside is the Best High School in America.

I’ve heard people say, “Lakeside is the best high school in America.” Do you think that’s true? I haven’t personally made that claim. I tend to shy away from superlatives, like “the greatest” or “the best.” After all, how do you compare Lakeside to so many other high schools in America? Even among our fellow WELS high schools, can we really say we’re “the best”?

If someone wants to declare, “Lakeside is the best!” I certainly wouldn’t argue with them! But instead of focusing on comparisons, I prefer to say, “There are many reasons to choose Lakeside as your high school.”

Consider this: some Lakeside students travel over 40 miles one way to attend school every day—and they (almost) never complain! Many families have sent multiple siblings here, and some even span generations, with sons, fathers, and grandfathers all calling Lakeside their alma mater. What makes Lakeside so special?

You could point to the many positive qualities at Lakeside. Our transfer students will tell you that our teachers care about them as students in ways they didn’t experience at their previous schools. Visiting parents frequently comment on the respect and cooperation they see in our hallways. I was recently at a community event in Lake Mills where a stranger approached me to tell me just how much she appreciates our students—“you can tell right away who the Lakeside students are!” she said with a smile.

But do these things make Lakeside “the best”? While they’re certainly wonderful qualities, the heart and soul of Lakeside is something even greater: the Word of God.

This is Lakeside’s “greatest” (I’m using a superlative!) quality. The good news of Jesus Christ—His life, death, and resurrection as our Savior—is what makes Lakeside the school that it is.

Our students have the hope of eternal life. They are freed from guilt, assured of God’s love, and filled with the joy of knowing that God is for them and working in their lives for their eternal good. This is what makes an hour commute worthwhile. This is what makes Lakeside truly special.

I’m grateful for the many compliments that Lakeside receives. Calling it “the best high school in America” is a generous and kind statement! As we continue to keep Jesus in the center of everything we do, we pray that God will continue to bless this ministry and all the families who entrust their children to us.

And while we may not always claim to be “the best,” one thing is certain—Jesus is. And He is the greatest part about Lakeside. ❧DS
