Politicians and promises

Well, which politician are you voting for? It’s the election season, and you have to make a decision. Which one do you want as your next president?

They both make lots of promises. Will they keep their promises? Do you believe them? Have either of them ever failed to keep a promise in the past? Which candidate gives you the most confidence about the future? Are you nervous about the election?

I’m glad that we do not have to depend on politicians to give us confidence about the future: “Do not put your

trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save” (Psalm 146:3).

Princes, presidents, or politicians promise many things. But as the Bible says, they are just human beings, and they cannot save your soul. There’s only so much they can do.

It is true that an elected official can cause a lot of worldly problems by making bad decisions. But your future ultimately depends on God. Later in that same psalm we read, “Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God” (146:5). Who will ultimately help us in our time of need? The God of Jacob, the God who keeps promise after promise. Who can fill you with hope and confidence about the future? It is the Lord Jesus, who has been your Savior and God before the election, and he will be your Savior and God long after the election.

His promises never fail: “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ” (2 Corinthians 1:20). May God bless the election. He will work things out in this world according to his will and for your good. That’s a promise you can depend on. ❧DS
