Not Satisfied by Cheetos

Have you ever come home after a long day, and you were hungry?

What do you reach for?

I know what I’m supposed to reach for—some vegetables, like carrots or broccoli, or maybe an apple or some mixed nuts. But none of those appeal to me when I am hungry. I always open the cabinet full of chips, even though I know I shouldn’t. The other day, I opened that cabinet and there was this big bag of Cheetos.

We never buy Cheetos at our house—but there they were! Was this real? I touched the Cheeto bag and realized that it wasn’t my imagination. So I opened it and started eating ... and eating ... and eating. I was hungry, but Cheetos weren’t making the hunger go away. It seemed I was hungrier as I ate them. Finally, realizing that this was not good, I put the bag away (what was left of it) and looked for something “healthier” to eat.

And I was still hungry. Has that ever happened to you? That bag of chips, handful of cookies, piece of chocolate cake—it tasted so good. But it didn’t satisfy your hunger. You needed something more, something healthier.

That’s also true for our souls. It’s been said that “there’s a God-shaped hole in the heart of every person…” In other words, we all crave something spiritual in our lives. We all want something deeper—something above us, bigger than us, something that only God can give. There is a special unconditional love, a special kind of peace, a special kind of purpose, a special hope. And you’re hungry for that. So am I!

We try to fill our soul with the things of this world—jobs, relationships, hobbies, vacations. But none of those truly satisfy that God-shaped hole inside our souls. It’s like eating Cheetos after a long day at work. What is the only thing that can satisfy the spiritual hunger of the soul?

Jesus says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35). Jesus is the only one who can truly satisfy your soul!

At Lakeside, our goal is to share Jesus with our students in as many ways as we can. His sacrifice on the cross for our sins, his resurrection from the dead, his promise of forgiveness and eternal life—those great things of Jesus can satisfy the human soul better than anything in this world. We want each student to leave school “full” of the gospel and even able to share the Savior with a world starving for a Savior.

The next time your stomach is hungry, skip the Cheetos. Trust me, it doesn’t work. (That won’t stop me from trying again.) But the next time your soul is hungry, reach for the Bible, and let Jesus fill your soul. He will fill you up, and you will be eternally satisfied. ❧DS

Lakeside Good News y Notes

July–August notables

> With all the new construction, other campus improvements might be overlooked. Fencing now surrounds our competition field (football/soccer)— improving the “secure fields” the WIAA encourages—and the baseball diamond foul line fence has been connected to the outfield fence. The East Gym floor was also completely refinished—sanded, repainted, decals applied and polyurethaned in the brighter style of the West Gym.

> On July 12, the Warrior Club held its 29th golf outing, welcoming 132 golfers plus another 28 for dinner. With the auction and raffle items, a “beat the pro” contest, the “Wheel of Not Ideal.” and a long drive contest, $23,000 was net to support every athletic team at your Lakeside Lutheran.

> We began our 67th year of classes on Aug. 19, with a record enrollment of 553, up 3.9% from the end of May. In addition to 8 new faculty installations at the opening service, Dennis Leckwee, 25 years, and Tim Matthies, 40 years were recognized for their ministry milestones anniversaries.

> K-8 students, there’s no table to look for this year, but you still should hunt down Mr. Lauber any time you see him and ask him for some “FedCred”—a card that gets you free admission to regular season home events!

New faces on campus!

More intros to come in next month’s FedCon ... say hello when you see:

Mr. Andy Hillmann | English

Mr. Hillmann joins us at full-speed, with English 9, Composition, Responses to Literature, and College Prep English on his plate. In addition, he will help coach football and girls soccer.

Andy and his wife, Jennifer, live in Oconomowoc and are members at St. Matthew. They have two daughters, Madalyn (LL ‘26) and Avaleen (7th grade), and two “little” dogs, Moses and Maverick. Previously in the Pewaukee school system, he says “being able to teach at the same school as my daughters—and ending the school year at Memorial Day—will be amazing!”

Andy grew up on a dairy farm, Riv-RSide Farms, in Hilbert and received his BA in Secondary Ed—English from UW-Platteville. He also holds an M. Ed. in Teaching & Learning and an M.S. in Educational Leadership from Carroll University. Outside of work, he enjoys “livestreaming my daughter’s sporting events on YouTube and attending UW Badgers volleyball games.”

Mrs. Christin Leckwee | Science

Mrs. Leckwee joins the Warrior faculty part-time to teach anatomy and be the faculty advisor for the spring musical. She and husband, Dennis (a LL theology

teacher), are members at St. Luke, Watertown, where she still serves as parttime worship coordinator.

Married for 26 years, they have six daughters: Madison (Nathan) Boulden, Clara, Patricia, Aurora, Faith (LL ‘26), and Bethel (‘28). They also have one granddaughter, Violet.

After graduating from Kettle Moraine Lutheran HS, she attended Dr. Martin Luther College for one year, then achieved a degree from VICI beauty school in Milwaukee. She returned to MLC and completed her degree in education. Their family has lived in South Dakota, Alaska, and Wisconsin.

Hobbies include listening to podcasts, singing, cooking, theater, watching movies, decorating, boating, exercising, traveling, thrifting, health and nutrition, politics, and entertaining friends and family. (Our hobby is wondering how she fits it all in!)

Mrs. Jessie Schroeder | ELC

Mrs. Schroeder is joining the Warrior family as an instructional aide in the Extended Learning Center. She also serves as the Pom Dance team assistant coach. “I am excited to work with students in a Christcentered environment, helping them grow not only in their school work but also in faith,” she says.

Jessie and her husband, Rob, are the parents of two children, Aubrey and Bennett. They live in Lake Mills and attend St. Paul. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, hunting, fishing, and volleyball. Fun Jessie trivia? During high school and college, she worked for the Milwaukee Brewers as a famous racing sausage and other in-game promotions and activities.
