Grateful for Jackhammers and Fire Alarms

Reach Principal Schultz at dschultz@llhs.org
But don’t expect an answer until August.
Imagine the sound of a jackhammer dominating the room where you’re working. You see dust in the air. You say to yourself, “Do I smell something?” You start coughing and decide it’s time to find a different place to type on your computer.
That’s been my experience working on campus these last few months as the front of the building has been under construction. Presently, I have no office and work wherever I can find a space. Besides empty classrooms, I’ve worked in the wrestling room, a storage room, on a picnic table, and in a coffee shop. There have been moments when the water has been shut off, the electricity has been shut off, and the fire alarm has gone off. Just a typical day at Lakeside this summer!
Maybe you think I am complaining, but I am not. I am very grateful. These situations are all “first world problems” compared to what other Christians are going through in other parts of the world as they attempt to carry out their ministries. I’m grateful that we are able to remodel this building thanks to the generosity of ministry supporters and the wise planning of our staff members. I am grateful for all of this chaos. Every construction sound is a sign that God is blessing Lakeside!

I’m grateful for the flexibility and sense of humor that our faculty and staff (and parents and students) have shown through all of this construction craziness. I’m also grateful for the construction workers who have been so hard working and polite and cooperative whenever I’ve interacted with them. I’m grateful for all the people who come here everyday for whatever reason. We’re all working in different ways to make Lakeside the best place it can be for students to receive a quality Christian education.
Finally, I’m grateful for you. I’m thankful for anyone who would take the time to read this article during the summer, and pray a short prayer that God would bless Lakeside Lutheran High School. May God bless the construction project! May God bless the preparations for the upcoming school year! May God bless all of our teachers (7 new ones!), all of our students (about 150 new ones!), all of our families, and everyone who supports the ministry that takes place here! May God bless what happens in this special school, and all the construction dust that surrounds it!

“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now” (Philippians 1:3-5). DS

Summer News
e Our Warrior Marching Band won the Director’s Choice Award at the Bourbonnais Friendship Festival Grand Parade! Then they headed to St. Louis where they took fourth in America’s Birthday Parade.

This. Is. Lakeside.
At age 14, Ron Laitinen started working on a farm and never attended a single day of high school. After attending Grandparents Day events for his grands Caitlin and Cameron Weiland, Ronald (now age 90) said he felt those days at Lakeside were his time in high school. After hearing that, Lakeside decided to make him an official honorary graduate. Midwest Scholastic, our diploma company, was more than happy to add one more diploma to our order.
Before our graduation ceremony, Pastor Don presented Mr. Laitinen with an honorary diploma that read “Ronald Laitinen has satisfactorily completed the Course of Study as a Grandparent in support of Christian Education and is therefore entitled to this Honorary Diploma.”

In 2023-24, our administration and board members broke last year’s record when they issued a total of 25 calls. Fifteen were returned and 10 were accepted—7 new, 3 internal (Pastor Toepel, Sophie Dorn, Austin DeNoyer). We’ve also added an aide in the ELC this summer. Photo faces are listed in L-R order, top then bottom:
5 Emily Muir: Biology
5 Bill Tomlin: English 10
5 Jenny Statz: Assistant Director of Student Services
5 Andy Hillmann: English
5 Amanda Bosnak: Earth and Environmental Science, Foods 2, FFA advisor
5 Caleb Kasper: Tech Ed
5 Christin Leckwee: Anatomy, faculty advisor to spring musical
5 Jessie Schroeder: ELC Aide
Eight new faces on campus means we need months to introduce them. Look forward to saying hello with us to:
Miss Emily Muir
Biology / Soccer, Cross Country
Miss Muir is a 2018 Martin Luther College grad with a major in Elementary Education with minors in math and science. She will be teaching biology, coaching varsity girls soccer, and assisting with cross country. “I am excited to use my passion for coaching, athletics, and helping students grow. I look forward to encouraging students just as my teachers and coaches did for me,” she says.
Emily is the youngest of three daughters and is a proud aunt
of four. Although she grew up in Watertown, she recently moved from Washington state where she taught for four years at Evergreen Lutheran High School. “I loved living out in the PNW and plan to make many visits to see the beautiful mountains, oceans, and my friends!”
If she isn’t at school, you’ll find Emily at a coffee shop or at The Box (her CrossFit gym). She is a competitive CrossFit athlete and has reached the semifinals of the CrossFit games.
