No One is Nice. When you’re a tourist and people are nice to you, are they really nice? My wife and I were walking through a pedestrian area, tourists looking for a place to eat. A nice man approached us—he wanted to know where we were from and what we were looking for. He gave us some advice and continued to make small talk with us— what a nice man! But, as it turns out, he had a motive. He wanted to sell us a timeshare. His niceness turned into heavy pressure as he tried to convince us to attend a 3-hour presentation. Then came his annoyance when we declined as politely as we could. In my disappointment with the human race, I thought to myself, “No one is nice!” Are you nice? God would like Christians to be “nice.” He calls it “kindness”—“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy… (and) kindness” (Galatians 5). It’s to do nice things for someone else without expecting anything in

return, to help people, to encourage people, to care about other people—with no selfish motives. Are you kind?

Pastor Don Schultz is principal of Lakeside Lutheran. Reach him at 920.648.2321 or dschultz@llhs.org

Ultimately, God is our source of true kindness: “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy” (Titus 3). God shows his kindness by giving us his Son as our Savior. Jesus is God’s kindness in the flesh. God gives and gives, because of his mercy.

Let’s walk in the footsteps of Jesus, showing kindness to the people God places into our lives. When you are “nice” to someone, they may be surprised to find out that you have no timeshare to sell. Instead, you are reflecting God’s love, showing the same kindness that he has shown to us. ❧DS
