The Engine Light is On Do you like it when the engine light in your car turns on? I find it unsettling. Last month I was driving on the freeway between Milwaukee and Madison, and my engine light turned on. First there was the sound of the chime, and then the light started blinking. That’s not a good sign! What could it be? I don’t want to be that person stranded on the side of the freeway, especially during the winter. How long can I drive with this light on? The engine light is unsettling, but it’s necessary. There’s something wrong, and it needs to be fixed. I’m grateful for

the people who know how to make those engine lights turn off. The repair bill can be painful, but it’s better than waiting for a tow truck as you wave at all the cars that drive by. We live in a world where the “engine light” is on, and it’s flashing! Death is present. Sin is everywhere. Problems abound. These are signs—“warning lights”—that something is wrong with this world. You don’t need to look very far to see those signs. Look at your own life, and the people you know and love, and you’ll find death and sin and problems. The world’s engine light is on. Something is wrong. This imperfect world causes us to look for a Savior, someone who can fix these problems that we can’t fix ourselves. Jesus deals with the problem of sin, by taking away our sins at the cross. Jesus addresses the problem of death, by changing your death into the gateway to eternal life. And as you deal with all the other problems this world brings, Jesus gives you the strength and wisdom that only he can provide. “In this world you will have trouble,” Jesus says, “but take heart, I have overcome the world.” Do you have trouble? Then go to the One who overcame the world. Let Jesus be the one you look to, and rely upon, as you navigate the many problems this world brings. ❧DS
