You don’t know what you don’t know
Have you ever heard that title phrase before? It’s a phrase that describes the unknown future. There are certain things that are going to happen in the world, or in your life, and you don’t know what they are. You can look ahead, you can plan, you can be proactive. But in the end, there are unknowable events that will happen, and you will be surprised. Some people call them the “unknown unknowns.”
No one knew 9/11 would happen, and all the fallout after. No one knew COVID was coming, nor all the repercussions. On a more personal level, you have probably experienced health or relationship or money challenges that you never saw coming. There are no classes to take, no seminars to attend, no books to read that ready you for the unknowable events. Except ... there is one book that can help, and that is the Word of God. The words and promises of God will prepare you for the unknown unknowns more than anything else.
I write this as we head into the graduation season. Perhaps you’re starting to receive graduation invites—or maybe you’re sending some out some of your own! Our seniors at Lakeside will graduate very soon. Are they prepared for all the unknown things that will happen in their lives? Some of them will experience health challenges that no one ever saw coming. Others will experience unforeseen ups and downs in their relationships, or in their careers. They don’t know what they don’t know.
may events to note
When you have those moments, what do you lean on? What gives you stability and strength when your life suddenly goes in directions not planned for?
“‘I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” This Bible passage (Jeremiah 29:11) is a common one at graduation time. To make a long story short —God promises to bless, even in the midst of events you could not anticipate. God is in control. He works it all for good. The same God who dies for your sins and rises from the dead is blessing you now and into your future.
What is your favorite Bible passage to cling to when you find yourself in an unexpected situation? There are so many good ones to choose from! While it is true that “you don’t know what you don’t know,” this is also true: We do know God’s promises. We know the God of grace and mercy. We know the God of power and love. Our seniors have heard these promises for four years, readying them for their unpredictable future. We don’t know the future, but we do know our Savior. May he and his promises bring us peace and joy during this graduation season!
