My son

came home from school very upset. Something had happened at school that day, and it was really bothering him. What could it be?

It happened in the cafeteria. At lunch. “What?!?” I wondered.

They had mini-corn dogs for lunch. That’s what happened.

And that’s what was so upsetting.

He was angry and sad because they were so small. Why not have a regular-sized corn dog? Why did it have to be “mini”?

This was what happened in school that day. He was truly upset about the corn dogs being so small.

I told him that better days were ahead. He was over-reacting.

I knew that he had had a long day at school, was tired, and was making a big deal out of … nothing.

Has your son or daughter ever done that? Sometimes the role of a parent is to “de-escalate”—to calm down, to give perspective, to gently encourage.

Sometimes (certainly not always) it’s just a “corn dog.”

I’m not telling you to brush off everything that upsets your child. There are times to listen, to help, and maybe even to get help. Sometimes there are big things to deal with as a parent, unfortunately.

Dear parent, may God bless you with wisdom to know the difference! If your child is upset about something small, may God give you the wisdom to see that. Help your child to relax! And if your child is upset about something bigger that needs your attention, may God give you the wisdom to deal with that as well. How do you know which is which? Unlike our corn dog story, sometimes it’s not so obvious, and that’s why we pray for wisdom: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5).

Dear God, give us the wisdom we need to raise our children in a way that helps them!

Amen.

At the General Board meeting on August 22, Grace Lutheran Church (ELS) on the west side of Madison was ratified into membership in our Lakeside Lutheran Federation. This brings our total federation partners to 33 churches and 21 schools.

lakeside good news E notes LLHS welcomed 152 for freshman orientation on Aug. 17 and classes began for 511 students the next day, an increase of 12.8% from the start of 21/22.

Lake Mills Police Officer Jessica Johnson, a 24-year police veteran, is our new School Resource Officer. She plans to be on campus at least once a week to get to know students and staff.

Senior Christian Stuebs [St. Paul, Lake Mills], a Lake Mills volunteer firefighter, received a lights and sirens escort to school the first week, courtesy of the Lake Mills FD. Before the home opener football game on Aug. 19, our Development Team welcomed 177 Twice is Nice volunteers, Lakeside faculty & staff, General Board, pastors & principals, and members of our giving society to their annual appreciation night.

The girls golf team made history again this year, firing a program-low 169 to win the home conference meet.

Senior setter Olivia Bartels [St. Paul, Lake

Mills] reached her 1,000 assists milestone at the UW-Whitewater tournament on Aug. 27.

On Sept. 2, we held our first of four “Pastors Day” where 39 pastors enjoyed breakfast and an all-school chapel, then met with 445 students from 30 congregations.

We enjoyed a farm-to-school lunch, courtesy of the Wiedenfeld family [St. John, Newville] who donated 275 ears of corn. Foods 1 & 2 students shucked them and the food service team prepared them. Foods classes learned how to “put up” corn with leftovers, and the Skalitzky family [St. John, Waterloo] picked up the husks for their cattle.

At freshman parent night on Sept. 7, over half of the freshmen students (77) had one or both parents walk the hallways and meet the teachers in classrooms.

During chapel on Sept. 9, Warrior football players led the student body in singing the hymn, “Afflicted Saint, to Christ Draw Near.”

The refrain serves as the team’s theme “The battle’s fierce, but the victory’s won.”

Warrior Volleyball hosted its first “Youth Night” where 30 elementary girls from St. Paul, Lake Mills; TSL; St. Matthew, Oconomowoc; and Eastside helped form the line that our varsity runs through to begin warm-ups. After the match, varsity girls took photos and signed autographs.

Isaac Winters [St. Luke, Watertown} has been recognized as a semi-finalist by the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing him in the top 1% of 1.5 million test-takers.

For 24 years he has sold laser printer parts for a company in Madison.

A native of Keokuk, Iowa, Bruce graduated from Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids, playing basketball and double majoring in Administrative Management and Marketing.

Mrs. Arndt joined the kitchen team this year. “I enjoy seeing all the students and being on campus while my kids are here. I enjoy that I get to hear God’s Word and prayer while I’m at work; it’s a pretty awesome job perk!” she says.

Mrs. Neumann isn’t a new face on campus, but she is serving in a new role—part-time Attendance Secretary. “I enjoy working with the kids and chatting with them,” Rebecca says.

Jamie is married to Shaun, one of the pastors at Peace, Sun Prairie. They have two boys: Isaiah, a sophomore, and Daniel, an 8th grader.

She went to Michigan Lutheran High School, St. Joseph, and studied business finance at Western Michigan University. Her favorite hobby is gardening, both flowers and vegetables; reading is a close second.

Fry, who once worked on a charter fishing boat in Juneau, Alaska, is married to Kayla and they have four children: McKenna 10; Hugh 7; Jacqueline 4; Logan 1. They are members at St. Peter, Helenville, where Kayla serves as the director of the Early Childhood Center.

The family has also a dog, Poppy, and two cats, Pounce and Socks.

In spare time, “as an old man, I still play baseball in summer with the Helenville Rebels,” he says.

A ‘95 LL grad, she is married to Brian, and they have four boys: Ethan (LLHS ‘19) grad, Benjamin (‘21), Evan, a junior, and Luke, a 6th grader at St. Paul, Lake Mills.

They also have two dogs, CJ & Captain. She graduated from Carroll with a degree in nursing and enjoys crafting, baking, boating, going to games and concerts, yoga and working out.

His hobbies include watching his son Matthew (‘20) play football at WLC, riding his Harley, golfing, listening to music, and watching movies. “I’m a Wisconsin sports fan: Badgers, Brewers and Bucks, but the Dallas Cowboys are America’s Team and mine too,” he says.

He also sits on the Finance Board at St. Paul, Lake Mills.
