Summer here is loud

One of the first things I noticed at Lakeside when I began teaching here was the “loudness” of the building during the summer. I thought that the school would be quiet! After all, it’s summer vacation, and all the students have gone home. It’s time for peace and quiet! My unrealistic expectations quickly unraveled. First there was laughter. Then, the squeak of tennis shoes. Then the opening and closing of doors. Loud voices. Kids running. Music. Food smells. Students are back? But it’s only June. I’ve learned that at Lakeside, the building is very busy during the summer—overnight band camp, grade school sports camps, high school speed and strength programs, meetings of different school groups—all of this and more is summer at school. On most days, the parking lot is filled with cars, students and parents are in the hallways, and the building is loud!
And I’m glad for that. It reminds me that the ministry of Lakeside Lutheran doesn’t stop in May. It continues throughout the summer. “Partnering with families to educate, encourage, and equip students for life and eternity” (our mission statement) keeps happening even when school is out. A coach working with young people at a sports camp, a parent volunteer helping a student adjust a band uniform, students meeting at Lakeside and then going on the adventure of a mission trip—these are just some of the many ways that God is glorified and people are served with the Gospel even when classes aren’t in session. This Bible passage comes to mind: “I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth” (Psalm 34:1). If you’re looking for a place to enjoy a little peace and quiet this summer—you might find a spot at Lakeside. But as you wait for your teen to finish up an activity or practice, don’t be surprised if the building is louder than you expected. The noisy business of educating, encouraging, and equipping continues on, “at all times.”

lakeside good news E notes Wrapping up the school year ▶ On May 29, 94 students graduated in an outdoor service held on the competition field. In this class, 29 seniors reported over $850,000 in scholarship offers from individuals, foundations, organizations, and the schools they applied to attend. Of the 94 grads, 68 have indicated plans to continue their education in the fall at 4-year colleges or tech schools, one plans to enter the military, one currently plans for an apprenticeship, and 20 expect to enter the workforce. ▶ During the school year, six worked in apprenticeships under Tech Ed teacher Jeff Meske. Three seniors worked over 3,400 hours since last June. Ethan Degner [St. Mark, Watertown] apprenticed at Ryan’s Auto Care of Lake Mills. Andrew Treptow [St. Matthew, Janesville] worked at a YA dairy placement at Barlass Jerseys in Janesville with 1,900 hours of on-the-job training. Jeffrey Kalma [St. Matthew, Oconomowoc] was a CNC machinist at Aztalan Engineering in Lake Mills. ▶ STEM Academy students took the end-of-course assessment through Project Lead the Way. Among freshmen through seniors, 85% scored in the “Accomplished” or “Distinguished” range, which combined with an A or B in the class, often qualifies students for internships and apprenticeships, allows them to earn college credit, or bolsters their college applications or resumes.
▶ We said farewell to Dorlene Schroeder [St. Matthew, Oconomowoc] who retired after several years as a part-time counselor, and to Religion teacher Pastor Mike Helwig [St. John, Newville], who is leaving to pursue a master’s degree in counseling. ▶ Additionally, after our Commencement Concert, we also bid a fond farewell with a sweet cake reception for our three retirees Mr. Jim Buege, Principal Jim
Grasby and Mrs. Ruth Hirschfeld who are each retiring after a combined 64 years of ministry at your Lakeside Lutheran. Looking forward to fall ▶ LLHS freshman class of 2026 currently has 149 enrolled. Total enrollment for 2022-23 is currently at 507. ▶ Lakeside received 176 Wisconsin Parental Choice Program applications. Nearly 95% of them are from students who attended a Lutheran grade school.
▶ 70 teen-witnesses are out on 8 trips across the U.S. with our Operation Go mission trip program this summer.
Spring Sports Report ▶ Girls soccer ended the season 8-122. They advanced to the regional final, defeating Racine St. Cat’s in double OT and finally penalty kicks. All-conference 1st-team Ella Ristow [St. Luke, Watertown]; 2nd-team Lily Schuetz [St. Paul, Lake Mills] and Averi Wolfram [Eastside, Madison]; Honorable Mention Olivia Ibeling [St. Paul, Lake Mills] and Ianna Wolfram [Eastside]. ▶ Softball went 13-6. All-conference 1stteam Nora Statz [St. Peter, Helenville]; 2nd-team Abby Meis [Trinity, Watertown], Kendall Lemke [Immanuel, Farmington]; Honorable Mention Greta Pingel [Peace, Sun Prairie]. Statz played in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association All-Star games in the Dells. ▶ Boys golf placed 6th in conference. Junior Brandon Kreutz [Resurrection, Verona] represented Lakeside at the WIAA D2 sectional held in La Crosse. ▶ Baseball finished 12-11. Conference 1st-team Aidan Berg [Eastside, Madison], Nate Yaroch [Zion, Columbus], and Tyler Marty [St. Paul, Fort]; 2nd-team Brock Schneider [St. Paul, Lake Mills] and Nolan Meis [Trinity, Watertown]. ▶ In track and field, the boys team are conference and regional champions. Senior Kyle Main [St. John, Juneau] won conference male athlete of the year. 12
