“B

ut Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way” (Daniel 1:8).

The prophet Daniel was born about 620 BC. In that year, Josiah was Judah’s final godly king. Few realized how rapidly the nation would decline. Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar launched the first of three invasions in 605 BC. Not only did he capture Jerusalem, but he took valuable items back to Babylon—including members of the royal family. He wanted these individuals to serve in his kingdom. Among them was Daniel.

Although Daniel could have refused, resisted, or attempted escape, he served courageously and faithfully in a godless culture. When offered food that God’s Law called unclean, he and others relied on their faith in God to refuse. Not only was their action God-pleasing, but it gained Nebuchadnezzar’s notice who listened as Daniel glorified God. Today’s believers live in a world that is every bit as hostile as that of Daniel’s time. Instead of battling malevolent kings and powerful empires, we fight the societal decay of God’s standards as revealed in the Ten Commandments. Battles are ongoing in government, education, the media, and the arts to create a new order. The ultimate goal is to abandon the time-honored traditions of godliness. Moreover, individuals and institutions who act and lead in godly ways are labeled archaic and intolerant. How should Christians respond? Should we violently strike those who tear down God’s standards? Should we cloister ourselves to avoid the evil world? Or, should we become “relevant” and embrace godless change? The answer to each of these questions is no. Rather, we should respond like Daniel and his contemporaries by faithfully adhering to God’s Word. Our words and actions—motivated by faith and done in obedience to God—are our best proclamation of the truth to a straying society. Christians must lead and guide our nation back to the truths of God’s Word and the morals it prescribes. All the while, we must recall our Savior’s high priestly prayer. Just before his arrest, Jesus prayed, “I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.” (John 17:14-16). Our ultimate goal is not to create heaven on earth. That can never be. Rather, we are to live as light and salt in this world. We live here temporarily to grow in God’s grace and lead others to him. Heaven is still our home.

Lord, keep us safe in these perilous times. Help us live godly lives and speak your truth. Help us guide others so that they, too, know the truth. Amen.
