Too busy for worship? Are you too busy for worship? From the moment we wake until we fall asleep again, we make decisions that reflect our priorities. Some decisions are simple: “Will I brush my teeth this morning?” Others are complex: “Will I re-evaluate my investments?” Some are frivolous: “Will I have white or chocolate milk?” Still, others are more serious: “How do I speak with my child about coming in after curfew last night?” Daily, we make a myriad of decisions. One decision we make—more than any other—sets the tone for our week. It is the decision whether to worship. Many Christians feel like something is “off ” when they skip church. And it is! Every day, the devil, the world, and our own sinful flesh beat us up, drag us down, and try to convince us that God could not possibly love us. At times like these, we may be filled with hopelessness and apathy that cause us to go through seemingly meaningless motions.

Jim Grasby is principal of Lakeside Lutheran. Reach him at 920.648.2321 or jgrasby@llhs.org

No one can easily redirect our priorities or force us to be faithful Christians. That is beyond human strength. But, when we hear the gospel weekly and regularly receive Jesus’ body and blood, we realize what is the most important thing in life. We are moved to regularly worship with fellow believers to “encourage one another, be of one mind, [and] live in peace” (2 Cor. 13:11) from the forgiveness of sins. Are you too busy for worship? Nobody should be too busy to worship.

God, give us hearts that seek you first and place you as our highest good. Amen.

The church is the place to go, take a deep breath, and be reminded of the truth. There we hear that “God is love” (1 John 4:8) despite our lovelessness toward him. There we are told that “Christ died for our sins” (1 Corinthians 15:3) despite feeling that we can never be forgiven. There we are reminded that “the gift of God is eternal life in Christ” (Romans 6:23) while living in a world that preaches self-righteousness. There we are assured that God grants “salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16) which gives us the sure hope of heaven.
