Appreciate the handiwork
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).
Nearly everyone appreciates fine craftsmanship. Whether it’s beautiful furniture with precisely-mitered cuts, an inspiring piece of music with artful design, or fashionable clothing with expert tailoring, true craftsmanship is to be admired. Paul tells the Ephesians that “we are God’s handiwork.” The Greek word for “handiwork” is poiēma, the basis of the word poem. God crafts us with perfect skill just as a poet crafts ideas, words, and sounds. With God’s divine craftsmanship, we are exactly as he determines: our physical features, our talents, and our thinking. We are just as he plans. After all, “we are God’s handiwork.” Preceding this verse are two key verses of the Christian faith: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). We are saved by God’s grace through faith in Christ. His grace is unearned and undeserved. Why he offers it to rebellious sinners, no one can fully explain. Yet, he does. God graciously provides his Word to show the only way of salvation through Jesus. Then, when that Word grows into saving faith, he provides opportunities for us—his handiwork—to live by faith. God even specially prepares these works for us to do.

Our world denies God and questions his being. Many ignore the natural signs of God in creation, attempting to eliminate him from daily life. Others question his purpose for us, denying his deity and questioning his created plan for us. This is where the opening passage comforts us with truth. Who God is, what his purpose is for us, and how he plans for and provides opportunities for us to perform good works by faith—all point to a loving God who created us as his one-of-a-kind handiwork. “For we are God’s handiwork.” Just as an artisan selects choice material and uses expertise to craft objects of beauty, God deliberately shapes each of us. He makes no mistakes. He makes us just as he intends so that we may serve him and others in love.
Indeed, “we are God’s handiwork!”

lakeside good news E notes '' Lakeside’s faculty is complete for 202122 with the addition of John Dorn (from Illinois Lutheran HS), Nicholas Trebesch (from Luther Preparatory School), and Jacob Ziel (from Divine Savior Academy), all for math and/or science. '' We’ve come a long way from flour sack babies. . . for 48 hours, students in the Child Development class are responsible for their Baby Manikin, learning the demands of parenting as well as proper baby care and handling. (They cry in the middle of class!)
'' Eighteen senior artists displayed their work in the atrium for our annual Senior Art Show. '' The show did go on! From April 2325 our Warriors returned to the stage for the hilarious production of The Nerd. Thanks to director and ‘06 alum, Kristina Meinel, for all the time and effort that went into this spring’s production.
'' Hannah Uher’s anatomy students visited Wisconsin Lutheran College and learned about the human anatomy lab, Anatomage (a virtual dissecting table), and the cadaver lab. '' From West Side Story to Les Miserables, The Godfather to Annie, Mrs. Julie Hildebrandt’s piano students performed a spring recital. The evening ended with the Chariots of Fire and Phantom of the Opera theme songs, each played by 12 hands on 3 pianos!
'' At our fourth and final Pastors Day of the school year, 23 pastors from 23 WELS/ELS congregations met with 96 of the 104 seniors to discuss their plans to stay connected to Jesus after graduation.
'' On May 1, Lakeside Lutheran High School hosted a modified version of its annual “May Banquet.” The night was a dance for only Lakeside juniors and seniors after a senior picnic off-campus hosted by Charlie’s Concessions of Sun Prairie, doors opened at 7 p.m. Members of the senior “royalty” court, as voted on by their fellow seniors, were Olivia Krieser (Eastside, Madison); Isaiah Andress (St. Matthew, Oconomowoc); Queen Stephanie Schafer (St. Paul, Lake Mills); King Devin Splinter (St. Matthew, Oconomowoc); Evelyn Schauer (St. John, Watertown); Darren Schuster (St. John, Juneau); Grace Seim (St. Stephen, Beaver Dam); Graham Hatcher (St. Matthew, Oconomowoc); Caitlin Heinrich (Eastside, Madison); and Ben Neumann (St. Paul, Lake Mills). '' On May 5, we celebrated our Warriors and their academic achievements inperson on awards night. Over $1 million in scholarship awards were reported by seniors headed to post-secondary education. From local scholarships to student athletes, from National Honor Society inductees to the class of 2021 Top Ten, we are thankful for how richly God has blessed our entire student body.
'' For Teacher Appreciation Week (May 3-7), students and Warrior families showered the faculty with love. Then on Friday May 7, in honor of School Lunch Hero Day, we celebrated Vicki Sukow (Immanuel, Farmington), Sandy Schafer (St. Paul, Lake Mills), and Rose Goers (St. Paul, Lake Mills) for keeping our students fed and nourished.
'' Warriors witness love for others: Kristi Bredendick’s (St. Paul, Fort) foods class spent the week making and preparing delicious gifts for students’ moms in anticipation of Mother’s Day ... Warrior volunteers headed to Twice is Nice for the always-popular plant sale ... The National Honor Society upperclassmen spent free time in the Lakeside greenhouse, potting flowers donated by Ebert’s Greenhouse Village and delivering them to care facilities in Lake Mills, Johnson Creek, and Jefferson.
