Promise holds through millenia of challenges

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” [Jeremiah 29:11].

Jeremiah 29:11 is a popular Bible verse for Christians in times of trial and hardship. Whenever problems arise, we find refuge in God’s Word. This verse is one of those places of refuge. In context, Jeremiah spoke to his countrymen who were exiled in Babylon. To be sure, there was emotional and physical stress among the exiles. But, on top of it, Hananiah, a false prophet, preached a lie to them. According to Hananiah, the Lord promised to return the people to Judah within two years. The exiles were jubilant. They would go home soon! Yet, Jeremiah knew this was false and he called out Hananiah for his lie. A few months later, Hananiah died. Now Jeremiah was faced with telling his people the truth. Instead of two years, they would live in Babylon for 70 years total! He urged the people to carry on with life in a foreign land. They should settle down, build houses, marry, and pray for the success of the Babylonian empire. It was a difficult message to deliver. Yet, Jeremiah did what the Lord commanded and closed with the inspirational words of the above passage. The exiles wanted immediate rescue from their suffering. Jeremiah had to proclaim the truth. It was not easy to rebuke Hananiah’s appealing lie. Yet, Jeremiah, guided by the Lord, told the people that the Lord’s response would not be immediate. Rather, it was his plan

and promise for the future. If we reflect on Jeremiah’s words, we see the Lord’s wisdom to all believers living in trying times. It’s a direct message: “For I know the plans I have for you.” The Lord knows the plans. They are his. Secondly, they are “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” The Lord’s plans will prosper us and give us hope for the future. We should not give up. We may experience different challenges resulting from the current pandemic—health concerns, financial worries, or family discord. Yet, this verse tells us that these things are temporary. The Lord has plans. In fact, he has the plans. Like the exiles in Babylon, we may also encounter false messages telling us things too good to be true. This verse reminds us to trust only in the Lord and his promises. Through faith in him, we have a sure hope for the future. Through faith in him, we will never become weary even in challenging times.

Lord, you are our only hope in this life. Keep us focused on you and your promises. You give us a sure future through our Savior. Amen.
