A message from Development Director Scott Gronholz

In 2020, feeling thankful—especially around the holidays—is not as instinctive for many of us. We know we are blessed, but it’s humanly hard not to be sad when we think of missed travel, missed events, missed family reunions, and more. It might seem a melancholy Christmas compared to past years.

As Christians, that’s when it’s so important to encourage one another with what we know in our hearts—that our reason for being thankful in any year is not found in the nature of what our earthly circumstances are; rather, it’s in the nature of whom we find lying in the manger.

God has given us the greatest gift of all—His Son, who died on the cross and rose again so that we may enjoy the blessings of eternal life with Him. These words of the gospel serve as a reminder of the one needed blessing to be thankful for. It is the assurance that—even in the midst of trials—we can be thankful to God because we know that He has promised to be with us.

So are we thankful this Christmas season at Lakeside Lutheran High School?

Most certainly. Perhaps more than ever when we realize how fleeting earthly joys can be. We are thankful for the core of this ministry, and we’re thankful for all of you who share in helping spread the gospel through our ministry.

May you have the gift of deepening faith, joy in hope, and abiding peace, this Christmas and always.

Giving Tuesday pARTnership The pARTnership and generous gifts of nearly 100 donors toward our December 1 #GivingTuesday effort allowed us to reach (and exceed) a lofty goal of $12,000.

Lakeside art teacher Lori Tetzlaff is thrilled to be ordering new pottery stools and drawing station tables!

Mrs. T shares, “Humility and Gratitude! That is what is flooding my heart. Thank

you so much for giving your gifts to the Lakeside Art Department. I know we deserve nothing in this life, as everything is a gift from our Savior, yet I can’t help but feel the art students deserve this new equipment as they work so hard day-in and day-out. New tables and chairs are just as important, if not more so, than paint and clay. Your generosity is amazing.”

And you didn’t stop there! By mid-December, we had received over $19,000! Gifts above and beyond the needs for the art classroom will be shared with the Fine Arts department in general. What a blessing to be reminded daily through all our activities and classes, “O LORD…we are all the work of your hand” –Isaiah 64:8

I still remember the night I received the phone call from Mr. Grasby explaining that I had been assigned to teach and coach at Lakeside. As a new college graduate and excited first-time teacher, I was blown away by the number of welcoming emails and messages I got from the faculty and staff. At the time, I thought maybe it was just classic Wisconsin friendliness, but it is clear now that it was so much more. Lakeside is such a special place to be a part of because Lakeside is a family.

Teaching Anatomy & Physiology and Freshman General Science means that I get to see 166 smiling student faces every single day. In the spring, I am also blessed to coach the girl’s soccer team.

While I love teaching science and coaching soccer, the best part of my job is sharing the gospel with these eager, young souls. Lakeside is more than just a great school, and our school year theme “Witness” demonstrates exactly how that is true. We prepare students to witness to the world. I love hearing students share their faith in the classroom. I love seeing them demonstrate their faith in the hallways. Most of all, though, I love to know that my students will go on to spread that same faith to everyone they meet.

Hannah graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran High School in 2013 and Martin Luther College in 2017. Her husband Eric teaches 6th grade at Peace Lutheran School in Sun Prairie, and enjoys assisting Hannah with soccer camps. When they’re not teaching or coaching, "you can find [us] tackling grad school, playing board games, exploring new coffee shops and restaurants, or enjoying our Creator's amazing masterpiece."

Rho

Fellowship

Members of the Rho Fellowship, with the Lord’s guidance, have provided multiple gifts totaling less than $1,000 within the last year to Lakeside Lutheran High School. The Greek letters Rho and Chi form the symbol for Christ. This symbol, displayed in the center of our school seal, serves as a reminder that Christ is the center of our faith at Lakeside. Through this faith we return our blessings to continue His work.

Faith clearly shines Justin Vanderhoof When I first came to Lakeside just over two years ago, I received my keys, found my classroom, and sat at my desk and wondered, “Now what?� After teaching grade schoolers for 15 years, the prospect of teaching high school students was a little daunting. Thanks to the welcoming, supportive faculty, however, it did not take long to settle in.

Now, nearly halfway through my third year here, it feels like home. Every day, I have the opportunity to form and strengthen relationships with my students, football players, and track athletes. Every day I get to share my faith and see how they live theirs. This is evident in all they do, but especially so during track meets.

While coaching football, I do not always have much interaction with the opposing players. In track, however, I get to see them up close. The faith of our students and athletes at Lakeside clearly shines through and contrasts with others in their words, actions, and attitudes.

What has impressed me the most about our student body is how they have handled the chaotic, unpredictable nature of the 2020 school year. Our students continue to put their trust in their Savior, even as their lives are continually changing due to their current circumstances.

Each day, they come to school with smiles on their faces and positive attitudes. It is a blessing to have the opportunity to foster and nurture that trust every day.

Justin graduated from Fox Valley Lutheran and Martin Luther College. He taught and served as athletic director at Martin Luther Lutheran School in Neenah before joining our English and Social Studies departments. His wife, Emily, is a preschool teacher at TrinitySt. Luke's in Watertown. They enjoy traveling to visit familiy and watching/supporting/ coaching daughters, Madelyn, Noelle and Hannah, in their various sports and activities.

Catch up with Lakeside good news & notes Our Warrior volleyball team’s generosity made NBC 15 news. When Edgewood High School withdrew from the state competition because of COVID issues, our team reached out with a note signed by each member of our team and a gift card for them to go out and celebrate their season—when the time is right. On top of that, the team found out in December that Lakeside won the WIAA Team Sportsmanship Award for WIAA Division 2 for the state tournament in November.

Winners are determined by the conduct and sportsmanship displayed by athletes, coaches, cheer and support groups, mascots, bands and spectators (the team took 2nd place at state).

Mr. Doering’s senior American Government classes practiced some citizenship skills as “presidential candidates” presented their positions in mock debate, part of an entire campaign where students design posters, give speeches, and create a video. Candidates pass through two primaries and a caucus before the field is reduced to two candidates. MLC student teacher Alex Quist, a student teacher of Mr. Doering’s pursuing Secondary Social Studies and Elementary Education, served as moderator for the debates this semester.

Our Tech Ed classes are wrapping up semester projects. In metals, students are creating new drainage covers for the soccer field, a drift trike, homemade fire pit, and a pondweed scraper for Monona. In Environmental Science, they are making animal calls and habitat homes. The CAD class is using the 3D printer to create a reinforced clothes hanger, personal indoor soccer ball, no-drip mug, foldable keychain with LED light, and fishing lure with removable hooks.

Our National Honor Society chapter officers—along with counselors from Christian Family Solutions (formerly WIs. Lutheran Child & Family)—are hosting six sessions of resiliency training for our students from December 2020 to March 2021. Using the Cornerstone™ curriculum, a team from CFS meets with students in every religion class, equipping them with tools and strategies to develop resilience, enhance quality of life, and decrease stress and anxiety. Lakeside is the first high school in the nation to offer resiliency training through Cornerstone™!

Our A Cappella Sundays have begun in area congregations.

While most have been virtual, we treasure the mornings we're able to worship person. Director Mr. Buege and videographer Mr. Todd Hackbarth have diligently produced video playlists so that churches who cannot have us in can still see and hear the music that our teens voices share in praise of the God who controls all.
