Trust our ever-present help “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea” (Psalm 46:1-2). 2020 has been incredible! Not long ago, COVID-19 was a distant problem. Now, it affects nearly every aspect of our lives. We’ve had to make many changes. Even as we begin to come together again, there’s a sense that life will never be the same. Will the future bring a resurgence of COVID or more civil strife? We don’t know. If the past few months have taught us anything, it is that we don’t know what the future holds. Things that appear permanent and unchangeable are not. They can be quickly taken. God tells us this in Psalm 46. The psalmist pictures the earth and its mountains as symbols of endurance. They don’t appear to move or change. The collapse of these durable objects depicts chaos and upheaval.

salvation is sure! Our sins are forgiven. Jesus has a place for us in heaven as the inheritance that cannot be taken away. The past few months haven’t changed that. God’s love and grace have not wavered. Though ”the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,” God’s promises of grace, mercy, and everlasting life remain true and last forever. The coming months may well be challenging. We’ll all have to adjust to a “new normal.” But “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” That remains true for now and forever.
Lord, lead us to always trust in you as our refuge and strength. Amen.
Yet, the psalmist also reminds us where we find refuge in troubling times. It isn’t in the things of this world or in creature comforts. It’s not in freedom or economic stability. All these may disappear in a moment. But, God’s promises can’t be taken away. What Christ said on the cross remains true forever: “It is finished!” Our

‘20-21 brings new STEM courses ØØ Two faculty members completed intensive Project Lead The Way™ training this summer to be ready new STEM courses. Mr. Phil Dretske will teach upper-level Aerospace Engineering that offers extensive hands-on experiences as students learn fundamentals of flight and propose solutions to exploration and robotics challenges. Mrs. Jodie Schommer joined the STEM Academy team, completing her training to teach Engineering Essentials, the new introductory course that explores the work of engineers and their role in the design and development of solutions to real-world problems. Center staff this fall. She is in the position vacated when Darice Brumm retired this past spring.
Kristi spent 35 years teaching at Lutheran elementary schools in California and in 2019, she and her husband, Dan, moved to Wisconsin when he accepted a call to be principal at St. Paul, Fort Atkinson. She taught grades 3-4 at Holy Cross, Madison, last year. She is replacing Erin Koschnitzke who moved to Waukesha when her husband accepted a call to teach at Wisconsin Lutheran High School.
With a BA in Fitness Studies and a Master’s in Special Education, Shelly taught for 10 years at Genesee Lake School in Oconomowoc, a school that focuses on teaching those with developmental disabilities, mental health disorders, neurological disorders, or emotional disturbances.
Kristi and Dan have two daughters and two grandchildren. Though it isn’t the same climate as warm and sunny California, let’s give her an extra warm and sunny Wisconsin welcome.

Shelly grew up in Juneau on a dairy farm and now lives in Watertown with her husband, Steve, and stepdaughter, Olivia.
Sara accepted our call earlier in 2020 to serve as a part-time German instructor after Mr. Walta retired this spring. She has an M.A. in German and Education from UW-Madison and a second M.A. in German from Middlebury College, Vermont. At home, she likes to spend time in the great outdoors with her husband and three daughters, reading, watching classic films, and listening to German and confessional Lutheran podcasts. “One of my greatest joys is hearing our Lord’s Word and confessing His truths by singing Lutheran hymns at family devotions,” she says. She will also continue to serve parttime in the ELC supporting students in their academic endeavors. Up to 25% of Lakeside students utilize the benefits offered in the LL ELC.
