parables (Luke 13)

BOGO. Everyone likes a great deal.

Although we may view Jesus’ parables as individual teachings, at least once in Scripture our Savior taught two adjacent parables with complementary messages.

Luke 13 records the parables of The Mustard Seed and The Yeast.

Although separate in content, the two dovetail nicely to illustrate truths about the kingdom of God. “Then Jesus asked, ‘What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to?

It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches’” (Luke 13:18-19).

Jesus wanted his hearers to picture outward growth. A small mustard seed was planted and grew into a tree capable of supporting birds. It visibly grew over time. The same may be said of the Church. It, too, had humble beginnings. Yet, over time, the Lord blessed it through his Word to grow into the most enduring institution of human history.

“Again he asked, ‘What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough’” (v. 20-21).

One may almost picture Jesus transitioning to his next parable. Again, using a common item—yeast—he illustrates a different type of growth in the Church—inner growth. He notes that “it worked all through the dough.” Although yeast’s outward effect is observable, it works inwardly through the dough, causing it to rise.

God’s Word causes outward growth in the Church as those who hear it believe and come to faith by the Spirit. At the same time, it creates inner growth as believers hear God’s Word, growing stronger in faith as individuals and congregations. Growth in the Church may not always be measurable. Yet, it happens because our Lord promises us that “my word ... will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11).

“What is the kingdom of God like?” Although the Church may be compared to many things, it is the living body of believers that grows through “the words of eternal life” (John 6:68).

Lord, help us to grow in and through your Word. Amen.

lakeside good news E notes Here’s what we fit in before our whole world tilted in March: The charter year for the Lakeside Bowling Club, a co-op team of students from Lakeside and Lake Mills High School, wrapped up its first season. The team won three matches and placed 4th in D2. Competition is stiff as all teams in the district compete regardless of school size and level of expertise. The district wrapped up the season with a fun tournament where the Lakeside club qualified 4th out of 12 teams and took 3rd place overall in the stepladder competition. Though Twice is Nice may be closed right now, we are so thankful for all the time and energy volunteers continue to give to Lakeside!

Operation Go Team Phoenix spent spring break serving at Cross of Glory, Peoria, Ariz. Though the planned work was changed from meeting people to spiritual growth and building community with the core group, it was a successful trip.

Team members organized church records, cleaned school rooms, sang in church, did yard work, sang at worship, helped the church prep for online worship, and bonded with their hosts.

A team of high school students competed for St. Paul, Ixonia in the State Lutheran High School basketball tournament—and won the championship! Congrats to sophomore Warrior, Keegan Lamp, who was on the winning team.

During the MLC spring break, a number of students did some early field experience work in our classrooms. Nate Kapanke (‘17) worked in Justin Vanderhoof ’s classroom where he taught a current event lesson in geography and students created their own podcasts in response to recent events in Latin America. In Jim Buege’s room, Forever Warrior Derek Gulrud (17’) helped with choir. Mr. Asmus welcomed Joshua Barnett, a junior social studies major, and Aidan Gregorius, a junior who is double majoring in elementary and secondary social studies.

A great group gathered at Twice is Nice on March 14 for the seasonal changeover.

Congrats to junior Austin Haley (St. John, Waterloo), who was recognized on the 2019-20 Capitol Conference Wrestling Team!

For basketball, senior Carter Schneider (St. Paul, Lake Mills) was named 2nd team all-conference and junior Ian Olszewski (St. John, Jefferson) received honorable mention. For the girls, senior Lauren Thiele (Holy Cross, Madison) received a 2nd team allconference nod also.

We weren’t able to welcome all the usual grades 1-2 field trips before the shutdown, but we loved hosting St. John, Jefferson; Eastside, Madison; St. Stephen, Beaver Dam; Crown of Life, Fort; St. John and TSL, Watertown. Check out the photogenic smiles at llhs.smugmug.com.

While students have been out of the classrooms, our awesome buildings and grounds crew swapped out the fluorescent lights for LED lights. Focus on Energy Wisconsin tells us that will save us 30K on our energy bill every year.

How did Lakeside adjust to this new world of distance learning?

With classrooms being closed, our teachers have worked tirelessly to stay connected to students. Here’s a glimpse of some of the changes: In World History and Economics, Andy Asmus uses online applications like Google Classroom, ScreencastO-Matic, Google Sheets, and Zoom to stay connected with his students. They check-in daily to Google Classroom to take attendance, watch video lessons, take online quizzes, and complete writing assignments.

The weekly schedule is on an Excel spreadsheet. Students have daily readings, and an online textbook has been made available to the class.

On the last day of each virtual school week, Mr. Todd Hackbarth has a theme for the day. From Bring Your Pet to Class Day to Crazy Hat Day to Zumba his math and religion students love their face-toface Zoom classes. How Mr. Hackbarth teaches his advanced math classes is a feature in the most recent LL Link magazine, out in mailboxes by May 1 or by visiting issuu.com/llhs Mr. Meske admits there really is no replacement for the wood shop, the welding station, the engine block, the 3-D printer, or the greenhouse. Still, he is diligent in sharing information and structure with the students by producing slides and learning opportunities such as virtual field trip videos. In addition, a number of students have been working on wood projects at home.

While waiting in line with social distancing of instrument pick-up for band, a number of students left chalk messages on the front walk for our teachers and staff—a great pick-me-up as they walked into an empty office and classrooms.

We miss hearing A Cappella Choir sing at federation churches on Sundays, so we

were thankful that Mr. Buege and Mr. Hackbarth got the students to sing “together” using technology. Check out their good news message at bit.ly/3a3zRIE It’s been a unique student teaching experience for Martin Luther College senior Chantal McGill, a double major in Elementary Education and Secondary Physical Education. She had been working with LL PhyEd teacher Jenny Krauklis’ classes when Martin Luther College sent student teachers home.

“It has been a challenge being home in Michigan away from school and my teacher,” Chantal says. “Yet it has also been rewarding finding ways to be creative and continue to keep the classes close to what they were in person, online. All of the resources shared throughout the synod and other teachers have made it easier to navigate what is available.”
