Paying it Forward
“Paying it forward.” It’s the practice of paying a stranger’s bill with no expectations. You may have “paid it forward” for someone—or someone may have “paid it forward” for you. By grace, we have experienced “paying it forward” in our lives. In his epistle to the Ephesians, Paul wrote to believers who were under fire. The times were perilous. The persecutions had begun. Nevertheless, Paul encouraged the Ephesians and believers of all times to walk with Christ and serve him in unity and love. Early in the epistle, Paul writes, “In [Christ] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace” (Ephesians 1:7). Jesus made payment “through his blood.” These words refer to Christ’s death on the cross as sin’s complete payment. His payment releases us from the eternal penalty of sin. Furthermore, it helps us manage sin’s earthly consequences—guilt, hopelessness, and despair. However, our freedom through Christ is not free. It cost him everything when he died to pay for our sins. What Christ did clearly illustrates grace—God’s undeserved love. By faith, we have the privilege of being God’s children with no strings attached. It is his free gift. In a sense, Jesus “paid it forward” for our sins. Before we believed, “even when we were dead in our trespasses, [God] made us alive together with Christ”(Ephesians 2:5, ESV). The reason is humanly inexplicable: “for it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast”(Ephesians 2:8-9).

?? This fall, we welcomed two student teachers. Sarah Dewey, a double major in Early Childhood Education and Special Education, was in the Extended Learning Center under Ruth Hirschfeld’s supervision. Kasandra Wagner, a Communication, Arts, and Literature Secondary Education major, has been in Jodie Schommer’s English classroom. ?? On Sunday, Nov. 10, Lakeside added another club to the roster since six students now comprise a Warrior bowling club team. This effort was spearheaded by bowling enthusiasts and Lakeside dads Tom Horn and Rich Parkhurst, both members at St. Luke in Watertown.
?? The journalism class headed to the Wisconsin State Journal headquarters to tour the newspaper’s multiple departments and learn how a newspaper is brought to life. ?? On Nov. 16, a group from Teens for Christ spent their afternoon at Second Harvest in Madison to sort food for many who are in need. They bagged sausage patties for various food pantries in Wisconsin and local areas in Madison. ?? At 2nd quarter’s Pastors Day, 347 students met with their shepherds; 28 pastors and one staff minister attended; 4 congregations were represented by two or more pastors; for two visitors, this was their first Lakeside Pastors Day; and 27 congregations—22 federated— participated this time.
?? At Casino Night, hosted by our MPO (Music Parents Organization), between gifts and an anonymous donor, a total of $12K was raised. The new band uniforms are fully funded and will be here before summer!
?? After strong finishes at both district and state dairy judging competitions last summer, Senior Matthew Gunst (St. John, Juneau) qualified for the Wisconsin team at the North American International Livestock Exposition, in Louisville, Ky. Matthew’s Wisconsin team placed 3rd overall and 1st in reasons. As an individual, he placed first in high reasons and 18th overall. ?? At the Fall Capitol Conference Math Meet, both the Varsity Team 1 and JV Team 1 took 1st place! Out of the 16 teams participating on the varsity level, Lakeside had four teams in the top seven. ?? In Mr. Dretske’s Computer Essentials classes, freshmen put their classroom coding lessons into practice by building and then programming SpheroBot chariots—which then competed in 3-lap races. Generous Lakeside family, friends, and students gave over $10,000 for new campus trees and additional property beautification! ?? In October and November, our 4th grade Federation friends joined Mr. Lauber, Mrs.
Krauklis, and Mr. Vanderhoof for a morning of fun, teamwork, and virtual reality.
?? Thanks to Twice is Nice’s generous $22K gift, our students are using brand new cafeteria tables at lunch. Thanks to our maintenance crew for all the work of getting them assembled and switched. We were happy to provide a number of our grade schools with the older tables! ?? At our annual Teens for Christ bake sale, over $300 was raised to support foster families this Christmas.
?? Wisconsin Lutheran College nursing students, including Forever Warrior Kali Madrid (‘17) , shared information about their upcoming trip to Africa and how they will promote oral health. Teens for Christ spearheaded a toothbrush drive and collected 5,124 toothbrushes for the student nurses to take along. That’s a lot of clean teeth.
?? Some football Warriors received a few more honors. The 2019 Wisconsin State Journal AllArea football team gave an honorable mention to Matt Davis (St. Paul, Lake Mills); Will Jorgensen (Our Redeemer, Madison); Tersony Vater (St. Luke, Watertown); Logan Pampel (St. John, Jefferson); and Nathan Chesterman (Peace, Sun Prairie). ?? Senior Collin Schulz (Bethany, Fort) signed a national letter of intent to to compete in track and field at the Air Force Academy next school year.
The State Department of Public Instruction (DPI) creates report cards for private schools based on students participating in the choice program. They assess schools based on student achievement, improvements in achievement, and potential post high school success. For the 2018-19 school year, Lakeside Lutheran High School received an overall score of 84.8, which is a 5-star rating of “significantly exceeds expectations.” This ranks your LLHS ranks 29th out of 428 private schools!
Top 2% again!
ACT Research Services of Iowa City, Iowa, released the ACT results for Lakeside Lutheran High School Class of 2019. Of the 110 members of the 2019 class, 87 wrote the exam. Based on a 36-point scale, their composite score was 24.1 (state average is 20.3). This keeps Lakeside among the top 2% of over 460 high schools in the state, as reported by the Wisconsin Department of Instruction. Once again, Lakeside’s mathematics scores led the four tested areas with a composite score of 25.6.
