From rags to riches is a common theme in literature, pop culture, and music. In real life, losers sometimes become champions. It’s appealing. After all, who wouldn’t want to go from failure to success, from poverty to wealth? For Christians, the themes of Advent and Christmas are the opposite: from riches to rags. John’s gospel begins, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). Jesus is the living Word of God. He existed with his Father and the Holy Spirit from eternity. He was the active Word at Creation. He was the Angel of the Lord in the Old Testament. Old Testament prophesied him as the Messiah. Indeed, Christ had it all as Lord of heaven and earth. But, sin entered the world through humankind. The hope of living in holiness disappeared. Humans would know only misery, guilt, and death. Here we witness God’s boundless love. Christ did the unthinkable. He surrendered heaven’s glories, “became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). He became what he was not so that we could become what we are not. Christ who is “in very nature God...made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant… [suffering] even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:6-8).

We will never fully understand Christ’s actions this side of eternity. Yet, he set aside heavenly glory—his “riches”— and took up humanity—our “rags”—as prophesied. His boundless love and undeserved grace are the greatest gifts ever!

Yet, Christ’s riches to rags story is far greater. He laid aside heaven’s riches for us. Now, as our risen and victorious Savior, he reigns again in glory. From all of us at Lakeside: God bless your Christmas celebration of his love through Christ. May he also bless you with a joyous New Year. Jim Grasby is principal of Lakeside Lutheran. school news E notes: ee Pastor Clark Schultz and Mr. Nathan Koerber, along with almost 20 Warrior teens, spent the first weekend in November at Martin Luther College for their Focus on Ministry weekend. Celebrate with us that PC and his family have decided to stay with us here, and pray that the Lord soon answers MLC’s need for a recruitment officer for the college. ee Both our Varsity and JV math teams took 1st place at the highly competitive Madison LaFollette meet in mid-October—a rare event for both to take first. Senior Ben Grambsch (Zion, Columbus) took 4th among all varsity participants. Then, in midNovember a record number of students—117—participated in the Capitol Conference Math Meet. ee We love our grands! More than 130 grandparents of freshmen and juniors joined us for breakfast, entertainment, shadowing grandkids in morning classes, and a wonderful chapel. ee The ACT scores for LLHS class of 2018 were recently released—of the 85 members of the 2018 class, 73, or 86%, wrote the exam. Based on a 36-point scale, their composite score was 24.2, which is above the state composite of 20.5 for almost 100% of students statewide. This composite score keeps Lakeside Lutheran among the top 2% of over 460 schools in the state. ee Senior Abigail Buxa (Immanuel, Farmington) has been named a Commended Student in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. She placed among the top 50,000 in 1.6 million students who took the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). ee 12+ Warrior FFA members and alum traveled to Indianapolis to meet up with 65,000 like-minded teens and adults at the 2018 National FFA Convention. ee At our fall sports awards night, we recognized the efforts of the six fall sports teams as well as 30 all-conference team honorees and athletes of the year. A total of 14 athletes received first team all-conference spots, 11 achieved second team, and five received honorable mention. In addition, two Warriors received Capitol Conference North Athlete of the Year honors in their respective sports— senior Casey Ponyicsanyi (St. Paul, Lake Mills), Offensive Player of the Year for football and sophomore Maya Heckmann (St. Andrew, Middleton), for golf. ee History was made as the Warrior football team earned a first-time-in-schoolhistory 4th round playoff berth. With a 5-0 conference record, they took the Capitol Conference championship. ee Lakeside Lutheran High School hosted a Veterans Day event Nov. 7. State Rep. John Jagler spoke to the almost 70 veterans. They represented more than half a century of military service— from World War II to the conflicts and wars in Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

ee At this year’s Capitol Conference Academic Bowl, senior Noelle Gates (St. Andrew, Middleton) won the overall medal for the World History category—for the FOURTH year in a row! ee On Sunday, October 21, Teens for Christ hosted the first New Friends afternoon of this school year, with one of the best turnouts so far! Warrior teens joined community special needs youth in pumpkin painting, face painting, cookie decorating, Bingo, Uno and more. New Friends happens again January 20 and March 3. ee Our 9-dancer Warrior POM team took 2nd place at the AMP It Up! Cheer and Dance competition at UW-Whitewater. Congrats to senior Sophie Griffin (Holy Cross, Madison) who earned the “Wow Factor” award!

R featuring...our federation schools! ee At our recent 8th grade open house, we welcomed 245 parents and students in the class of 2023! Missed it? Contact Steve Lauber for a tour! slauber@llhs.org ee A “Cadet Band” comprised of 50 elementary musicians from 18 grade schools (each with at least a year of band experience) joined the Warrior Band and Swing Choir at our annual Fall Concert, filled with patriotic and popular tunes. The day prior, 27 first-year instrumentalists showed off their chops at a Beginners’ Band concert for family and friends. ee 645 students in grades 5-8 from 16 area Lutheran elementary schools begin competition in our biennial spelling bee with a written exam in their own schools in weeks prior. 52 students in gr. 5-6 and 44 in gr. 7-8 moved on to the written examination in November at Lakeside. Top finishers then competed in an oral round, including 26 spellers from gr. 5-6 and 22 in gr. 7-8. The winning word for 5-6 was “splurge”; the upper grades competition was won with a correct spelling of “leisurely.”
