Teens for Christ are hosting another “New Friends” (through Jesus Cares Ministries) afternoon. Those with special needs are warmly invited to LLHS for activities in the EAST gym, to hang out and develop friendships. Young people with and without special needs will join together for a variety of activities, including games, crafts, snacks and music. Sound interesting? ome say, “Christianity is irrelevant!”

They believe that the Church’s primary mission is to solve humankind’s ills. So, when it does not address and resolve hunger, disease, war, and other earthly problems, they label Christianity as “irrelevant.”

Sin is the root of life’s problems. Evil forces—including our Principal’s flesh—continually foster sin. James writes, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires Message that battle within you?” (James 4:1). Moses directly states that the “inclination of the thoughts of the human heart [is] only evil all the time” (Genesis 6:5). We are naturally selfish. Our interests lie within. We place ourselves first thinking we are always correct. After all, it’s easy to point out life’s problems until we realize that we are the cause.

Some assume that Christianity will solve every earthly trouble. They think that God should destroy sin at their whim. When he doesn’t, they declare that he is uncaring, unknowing, and irrelevant.

We know that God does great things. He fed 5,000. He brought two million Israelites safely through the Red Sea. He raised Lazarus. He saves you, me, and all believers.

Still, he did (and does) these things in his own way at his own time to glorify his name.

Throughout Scripture, God instructs us to wait patiently. “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (Psalm 27:14). “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Eccl. 3:1). “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand” (John 13:7).

God has a plan for everything, including life’s problems. His solutions are timely and relevant. After all, they “transcend all understanding” (Philippians 4:7).

Really, Christianity is relevant!

5 questions GC faculty “Five Questions with the Faculty” is a light-hearted look at the teaching staff at Lakeside Lutheran. This edition features Mr. Andrew Rosenau, who joined the faculty in 2014. He serves as Guidance Director and Registrar, teaches freshmen Computer Essentials, coaches basketball and advises our National Honor Society chapter as it plans and conducts service activities.

Here are some other things you may—or may not— know about Andy Rosenau: He and his wife, Carrie (nee Dietlein), have two children, Ashley and Lukas, who attend St. Matthew in Oconomowoc where the family are members. Carrie is Vice President, Human Resources & Training, at Ixonia Bank.

What is your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?

Fishing, hunting or cheering on a Wisconsin sports team.

When you’re at your fave restaurant, what do you order?

I don’t really have a favorite. Instead, I enjoy cooking and like to spend time grilling out at home.

What is your favorite movie of all time?

I’d probably have to say Rudy or Hoosiers. I guess I like to root for the underdog and in both of those movies the underdog comes out on top.

What’s one of your most humorous moments at LLHS? Hard to pin one thing down, but I love the humor of our students.

What’s one of the most heartwarming moments of your time at LLHS? It would be every time I sit down with a soon-to-be graduate, and they tell me they want to be a called worker because of the impact an LLHS teacher has made on them.

school news E notes:

ss On August 20, Lakeside officially opened its 61st year of operation. The new school year began with 431 enrolled. (112 each freshmen and sophomores; 96 juniors; 111 seniors) This year saw a 6.4% increase and marks the fifth consecutive year of enrollment increase. We currently have 79 students in the WCPC (school choice). Pastor Clark Schulz presided over the opening service.

Rev. Timothy Schwartz (Zion, Columbus) led devotion, reminding us to remain focused on Jesus with an undivided heart. Four full-time and one adjunct faculty were installed: Pastor Michael Helwig (Peace, Hartford), Nate Sievert (St. John, Watertown), Hannah Uher (Peace, Sun Prairie), Justin Vanderhoof (Trinity, Watertown) and Pastor Chris Koschnitzke (St. John, Newville). ss The junior class rocked on Aug. 23! These students earned the right to “redecorate” the boulder that sits off the path to the football field when friends of the class of 2020 donated $1,025 toward a total $3,450 raised during the class competition at last spring’s Grand Event. ss Our friends at Twice is Nice Resale Store in Jefferson had over 70 volunteers at the seasonal changeover on Aug. 25, many of them Lakeside students. We love being able to give back to the group that gives us so much. The store is open Monday-Saturday from 9-5 and is always thrilled to hear of new volunteers! ss At their September campus visit this year, reps from Martin Luther College report that 47 LLHS grads are currently studying to be pastors and teachers! ss Our soccer team is now Army Strong after working out with Staff Sgt. Cody Black and pulling a humvee through the LL parking lot.

ss Last spring, 28 students wrote a total of 51 AP exams, and we now have results: overall rate of passing exams (scores 3 or above) was 69% (2017 statewide rate was 25.5%). Seven exams received a “perfect” score of 5. Earning a “3” (or higher) may allow students to receive college credit for class work done at Lakeside. ss FFA is off to a strong start! In mid-September, 40 students showed up for a first meeting. In addition, work continues on the greenhouse. The construction class built the benches from recycled ones donated from St. Coletta’s. An HVAC contractor will help with a furnace to make the greenhouse ready for winter. ss Your Warrior Band numbered a robust 81 as it marched in the always-popular Gemütlichkeit Days parade in Jefferson on Sept. 16 and HoCo Sept. 28.

ss Over 100 students showed up for the first Teens for Christ meeting. This year they plan to host three days for New Friends, volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank in Madison, plan a Christmas project with proceeds from a bake sale, organize a Life Day in January, coordinate a collection for the Watertown Alpha Center, and prepare and serve a meal for the Beacon Soup Kitchen in Madison.

ss Our STEM Academy begins this year with 19 students enrolled in Introduction to Engineering Design. LLHS is also one of the first high schools in the state to start a chapter of the Society of Women Engineers and met with a representative from Milwaukee School of Engineering to help plan the year’s agenda.
