The New Year often brings a mixed bag of emotions and memories. For some, 2017 was their best year ever. They look forward to an even greater 2018. Others experienced one struggle after another last year. For them, 2018 brings hope that things will improve. Whether you have just had the greatest year of your life or you are incredibly glad to see 2017 pass, the truth remains: you are not alone — ever! Our God is “with us” and he is “for us.” Christmas is the season of God with us. Our Savior — Immanuel — is literally “God with us.” Though this world continually changes, God does not. He comforts us in his Word by proclaiming, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (NIV 11, Revelation 22:12). He has always been with us, is always with us, and will always be with us. Not only is our God with us at all times, but he is for us. Christ is our brother who redeemed us from sin’s curse. His holy life, innocent suffering and death, and glorious resurrection confirm Paul’s assertion, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (NIV 11, Romans 8:31). Begin 2018 trusting that God knows what is best. After all, he is with you and he is for you. “[Christ] said to me, ‘Look, I am making everything new!’ He also said, ‘Write, for these words are trustworthy and true.’” (EHV, Revelation 21:5).

5 questions GC faculty “Five Questions with the Faculty” is a light-hearted look at the teaching staff at Lakeside Lutheran. This edition features Pastor Don Schultz, who joined the faculty in 2005. He serves as our assistant principal and teaches junior religion. He also coaches JV2—what he still calls “freshman”— football. We are blessed to have him stay with us after having recently been also called to pastor a church in Illinois. Here are some other things you may—or may not—know about Pastor Don: He and wife, Jennifer, are members at St. Paul, Lake Mills, and have three children— two girls and a boy, all in elementary school. What is your favorite thing to do on a Saturday? Eating breakfast slowly while sitting down, going to sports-related things, and traveling with family. When you’re at your fave restaurant, where are you & what do you order? Somewhere in Madison. I order nothing because the rest of my family orders too much and I just eat their food. I have enjoyed a lot of kids’ meals at restaurants. Sometimes I will splurge and order the biggest cheeseburger on the menu, instead of eating my kids’ grilled cheese. What is your favorite movie or book of all time? Shawshank Redemption is a great movie, although I haven’t seen any “grown-up” movies for awhile. Since I’m in the world of watching kid-movies all the time, I have enjoyed Despicable Me the most. The sequels haven’t been as good. What’s one of your most humorous moments at LLHS? I think it’s funny when people say to me, “You look really tired today— are you sick? You look rough.” But in reality, I feel fine, and I didn’t think I looked that bad when I left my house in the morning. That “humorous moment” happens to me from time to time. I’m still trying to think of a good way to respond. What’s one of the most heartwarming moments of your time at LLHS? A former student who had terrible behavior found me at the beach—years later—and apologized, told me how much he appreciated his time at Lakeside, and described what he was doing for a living. I was hoping he would buy me an ice cream cone at that moment, but that didn’t happen. Maybe I should have asked him.
school news E notes: ÒÒ Teens 4 Christ delivered 100s of non-perishable items to the Waterloo/ Marshall food pantry after a Thanksgiving school-wide blessing share. ÒÒ In Mr. Lauber’s Lit class, students—and their families—were challenged to not use TV, Netflix, Internet, earbuds, or texting (except for work-related items) for one day from 8 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Eight of the 23 families (Lauber’s included) accomplished it, and the students earned an extra credit point. ÒÒ As part of Optimist International’s “Youth Appreciation Week,” 52 Lakeside and Lake Mills students were invited to a breakfast, chosen for their exemplary leadership qualities. The attendees also heard featured speaker Pam Streich. ÒÒ Once a quarter, we host Pastors Day, when shepherds get a little time with their Warrior sheep to catch up, share info, study the Word, and of course, feast on treats! Our 2nd quarter visited featured 32 pastors from 28 congregations. ÒÒ Mrs. Rebecca Kroll is student teaching with Mrs. Hirschfeld in the Extended Learning Center. Rebecca, from Allen, Tex., and a Luther Prep grad, is a double major in elementary and special education. To Mrs. Kroll, student teaching is extra special in a WELS school. “All of the teachers that I’ve worked with have such a heart for service and are willing to go above and beyond for their students. It’s great to be in an environment where that attitude is shared by all,” she says. ÒÒ Dozens of Lakeside students participated in a Family Christmas Journey at Abiding Shepherd, Cottage Grove. They helped with crafts, singing, and live nativity scenes, which Pastor Nate Abrahamson explains, helps “families from the Cottage Grove area experience Christmas.” ÒÒ Throughout November, 100s of 4th graders from 16 LES joined us for a morning in the life of a Warrior. They used virtual reality goggles to travel through the ocean and join in historic scenes from New York. Then they became members of our Fit 4 Life class, doing timed sprints, dot drills, and the speed ladder. ÒÒ In December, Teens 4 Christ helped support “First Friends” in Las Vegas, an outreach that shares the gospel with African refugees and helps them get started in America. They supplied school items, clothing, and household goods. ÒÒ In call news, Pastor Caleb Davisson has accepted a call to Doral, Florida, effective June 2018. We will also or currently have calls out to replace Mr. Jim Bauer in math and Mr. Lance Johnson in science (both are retiring in May). ÒÒ This semester’s chapel offering went to 8 Miles for Water, to bring clean water to people around the world. ÒÒ At our annual Christmas concert on Dec. 17, our band, ensembles, and choirs led us in a wonderful celebration of the Advent season. 100 luminaries lit the outside walkway in memory or in honor of loved ones among our Lakeside Lutheran family.
