FED eration CONnection He is mentioned in only one chapter of the Bible. Even then, he is overshadowed by the Christchild.

Luke reports, “Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah” [Luke 2:25-26].

Simeon is described as “righteous and devout.” As such, he knew Scripture. He knew God’s anointed would be David’s descendent [2 Samuel 7], yet even greater than David [Psalm 110]. He knew the Chosen One would born of a virgin [Isaiah 7:14] in Bethlehem [Micah 5:2]. He knew a forerunner would precede God’s Promised One [Isaiah 40] and that the Savior himself would be a prophet like Moses [Deuteronomy 18]. He knew the Messiah would be forsaken and pierced [Psalm 22] and then rise from death [Psalm 16].

Simeon knew all this about his Savior.

Imagine Simeon’s joy as he held Jesus and exclaimed, “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation” [Luke 2:29-30]. His joy was complete. He offered thanks to God that the age-old promise of a Savior was fulfilled.

Simeon’s thanksgiving to God can also be our model for thanksgiving. He

waited his entire life for fulfillment of the promise of a Savior from sin. We share that same faith—only we don’t wait and wonder when it will happen. It has! God sent his Son to be our Savior so that all believers may have joy and thanksgiving.

At Thanksgiving, we tend to focus on God’s physical blessings. That’s good because God richly blesses us. Yet, we should also include his spiritual blessings in our Thanksgiving because they will last forever.

Like Simeon, may God “dismiss [us] in peace” knowing that his greatest blessing—a Savior—is ours every day by faith.

5 questions GC faculty “Five Questions with the Faculty” is a light-hearted look at the teaching staff at Lakeside Lutheran. This edition features Mr. Jim Grasby, who joined the faculty in 2003. He serves as our principal and also teaches one class each semester; this year it’s Health and then Responses to Literature. This month, he is also one of the clinician at the 50th anniversary National Lutheran Choral Festival, in Onalaska, Wis. Here are some other things you may—or may not—know about Jim Grasby: He and his wife, Nancy are members at St. John, Jefferson, and have two married children— Jeremy (Wendy) and Jessica (Tony)— and two grandchildren, who all live in Iowa. Other than music, his outside interests include collecting old hymnbooks and working on their house.

What is your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?

Yard work and catching an episode of House Hunters Renovation.

When you’re at your fave restaurant, where are you & what do you order?

Greek Islands Restaurant in Lombard, Ill. I’ll order anything that flames.

Locally, the Iron Ridge Inn has a great fish fry.

What is your favorite movie or book of all time?

Book: The Bible and The Scarlet Letter or To Kill a Mockingbird.

Movie: Dumb and Dumber (really!)

What’s one of your most humorous moments at LLHS? Several years ago, Lakeside had Freshmen Testing. It was a two-and-a-half hour session that we used to determine incoming students’ reading and math skills. Near the end of the session, a parent asked me how long I was going to be at Lakeside. I looked at my watch and said, “Until about 11:45.” She responded, “No! How many years will you be at Lakeside? I want to know if you will still be here when my last child graduates.”

According to that measure, I still have three more years.

What’s one of the most heartwarming moments of your time at LLHS? Seeing a graduate being a Christian dad or mom to his/her own child(ren).

school news E notes: Great first weeks of school—rejoice with us in our good news!

ss Faculty member Jim Bauer was inducted into the WBCA Hall of Fame in the “High School Coach” category on September 30. He has coached for 44 years, 17 of those at Lakeside Lutheran, where his basketball team won seven conference titles, three regional titles, and one sectional title, reaching WIAA Division 3 state semifinals in 2011. His 17-year record at Lakeside is 271-125.

ss Senior volleyball libero Kaitlyn Gehler (St. John, Waterloo) notched her 2,000th dig during a conference match v. Columbus the night of October 3. She has been a varsity starter for four years and is the first player in Warrior program history to achieve that record. She has committed to play D1 volleyball at UW-Green Bay.

ss At its annual volunteer appreciation dinner, the Good Stewards board—who runs Twice is Nice Resale Store in Jefferson— reported the store is on target to surpass $600,000 in sales for 2017, an almost 12% increase from a year ago. Gifts to LLHS have surpassed the $4.5 million mark since 1993, including operating gifts that help minimize tuition increases, as well as over $63,000 in school wish list grants just in 2016-17.

ss Sophomore Matthew Gunst (St. John, Juneau), a member of Warrior FFA, was on the #1 overall team at the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest at the World Dairy Expo on October 2. His team beat out 21 other 4-H teams from across the country and heads to Scotland to compete internationally in June 2018. ss Freshman golfer Maya Heckmann (St. Andrew, Middleton) placed 2nd individually at regionals and headed to sectional competition where she was only 3 strokes away from making state. The future is bright “fore” Maya!

ss A Cappella Choir has begun its annual visits to 20+ WELS/ELS churches to lead in song worship Sunday mornings. For a list of the congregations and dates, see our website: llhs.org/apps/pages/ACap ss Seniors James Neuberger (St. Paul, Lake Mills) and Devon Perkins (Holy Cross, Madison) were named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. This designation places them among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who took the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). ss Warrior Volleyball held its annual Volley for Hope event on a home match night in October, which included raffles, bake sale, concessions, and t-shirt sales that raised over $3,430 for Tomorrow’s Hope, a non-profit that supports local health care organizations who help those touched by Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other life-limiting illnesses.
