Not everyone has faith...

Everyday language employs understatements — phrases that make things seem less significant or problematic than they are. Even God’s holy Word uses understatements.

One such phrase is in 2 Thessalonians. Paul writes, “And we pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith” (3:2).

Now that is an understatement!

We live in a pagan society that becomes more hostile toward Christianity every day because “not everyone has faith.” The influence of Christianity in daily life has waned. Some calling themselves Christian deny the Biblical tenets of faith.

Views of living based on Scripture are under attack. Even right and wrong are not universally acknowledged as they once were.

In view of this, what should Christians do? God’s Word tells us to “stand firm.”

• “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place” (Ephesians 6:14). Our strength is in God and his Word; • “It is by faith you stand firm” (2 Corinthians 1:24). Faith created by the Holy Spirit through the gospel equips us to meet life’s challenges; and • “Stand firm, and you will win life” (Luke 21:19). God gives us the gift of eternal life by faith through grace in Christ.

It may be an understatement to say that we live in a non-Christian world in which “not everyone has faith.” Yet, God gives us the strength to stand firm in him and his Word.

5 questions GC faculty “Five Questions with the Faculty” is a light-hearted look at the teaching staff at Lakeside Lutheran High School. This edition features Mrs. Jodie Schommer, who joined the faculty in 1999. She teaches Language Arts 9, Journalism, British Lit, Vocational English, and Responses to Literature. She advises the yearbook & photography staff, the weekly student newspaper, and is the faculty rep for the dance teams. Here are some other things you may—or may not—know about Jodie Schommer: She and her husband, Gary, are members at Bethany, Fort Atkinson. They have one daughter, Katie (’08), who is pursuing her doctorate in clinical psychology while she and husband John Cleven (‘08) serve as houseparents for the International Student program at Wisconsin Lutheran High School.

What is your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?

My favorite thing is to jump on my bicycle and rattle off 40-50 miles, with a coffee stop somewhere in-between.

When you’re at your fave restaurant, where are you & what do you order?

I love to eat out—anywhere. I love salads or grilled specials.

What is your favorite movie or book of all time?

The Lord of the Rings is my favorite movie and book.

school news E notes: A new academic year is almost upon us, but first... cc Our A Cappella Choir had a recording session for its 2016-17 tracks shortly before school dismissed, and the CDs are available now! If you are interested in purchasing the full 13-track CD, you may buy one for $10 in the school office or make an order with Mr. Buege at jbuege@llhs.org. The playlist includes I Will Rise, Revelation Song, Be Still, Psalm 23 and nine more. cc Incoming junior golfer Lukas Heckmann (St. Andrew, Middleton) took the boys overall title at the WPGA Junior Championship to win the boys 13-15 age division by two shots (69) at Dretzka Park GC in Milwaukee. He will continue at the national championship at CC of St. Albans in Missouri July 31–August 3. cc Warrior Band finished its march across Missouri, Indiana and Illinois June 30– July 4 with a parade in Wheaton, IL, where the nicest testimony to the purpose and goal of our traveling band came from a parade organizer, who wrote to Mr. Pufahl: “Lakeside Lutheran High School Marching Band simply set Wheaton’s parade to a new high! The wonderful group of young people was exceptionally well presented in professional uniforms and professional formations too! Wow! I was looking forward to the band but never thought about the musical talents, formations and marching skills Lakeside’s students brought that day!! There are not enough exclamation points to use in this message. Thank you, thank you, thank you for coming to Wheaton! My only wish is that on your way home next year, I wish that the band could attend our parade again!!” At ease, Band. cc Several of our Warrior FFA members were involved in the Jefferson County Fair July 12–16. From showing animals to exhibiting handicrafts, your LLHS was well represented by our hardworking and agriculturally-minded teens. Next up, Dodge County!

What’s one of your most humorous moments at LLHS? A couple of male students were performing a section of Romeo and Juliet while wearing tights. I laughed so hard with my class that I fell off my stool.

cc Hundreds more young athletes filled both gyms and the outdoor fields as July brought distance running, football, volleyball and a first-ever STEM camp for grade school students. What a blessing it is to open our campus and host these eager lambs!

What’s one of the most heartwarming moments of your time at LLHS? One of the most heartwarming moments is when a student suddenly understands something he’s been struggling with, and I have the privilege of seeing the pure look of joy on his face.

(I’m smiling internally as I write this.)

cc Four of the six Operation GO mission teams have completed their trips, and whether it was soccer camp in Boise, flag football and soccer in Anchorage, or VBS in Houston and New Orleans, it was a wonderful experience for everyone involved, as our teens worked with children and families and our sister WELS churches there to share the Gospel!
