Sight may well be the most important sense because so much hinges on it.

Scripture mentions sight, vision, and other related words over 850 times.

Nearly everyone understands these concepts. They are also keywords in Epiphany.

Epiphany—the season of light—marks the revelation of God’s light in his only Son, Jesus. In short, Christ is the light of the sin-darkened world. He is its hope and only Savior.

The festival of Epiphany—the 12th day of Christmas—is the “Gentile Christmas.”

The Church has long celebrated the coming of the Gentile wise men to worship the Christ child on that day and all throughout the season.

Epiphany and Advent are like matching bookends. Not only do these seasons sandwich Christmas, but one complements the other. Advent passages like “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned” (Isaiah 9:2) take on a deeper meaning when considered from an Epiphany viewpoint. Sinners live in spiritual darkness and blindness. Christ is their only hope. Isaiah’s inspired words and other passages like it point to the salvation that comes by faith in Jesus for all sinners.

Christ alone dissipates the spiritual blindness that leads to despair and damnation. His light—much like that of the rising sun which disperses physical darkness—allows believers to see their God and Savior.

Christ is the light of the world during Epiphany and always.

“In [Christ] was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:4-5).

5 questions GC faculty “Five Questions with the Faculty” is a light-hearted look at the teaching staff at Lakeside Lutheran High School.

This edition features Mrs. Sandra Corlett, who began serving at LLHS in 1975 as Miss Grandt. She took some years off for family time and teaching preschool, and most recently returned part-time in 2001, now teaching Family & Consumer Science classes: Foods, Child Development & Sewing. Mrs. C also volunteers her time with Drama in costuming, set design and organizing cast meals, as Academic Bowl advisor and in uniform repair. New semester, new year brings celebrations and big plans

sandra corlett: She and Alan have been married for 38 years, with five children, all LLHS graduates: Susan (‘98), Catherine (Patrick) Corlett-Carey (‘01), Caroline (Brandon) Wales (‘03), Sarah (‘05) and James (‘08). They also have 3 grandchildren in St. Paul. She and Al are members at St. Paul in Lake Mills.

What is your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?

If not with my grandkids, I like to sew, scrapbook, look for decorating ideas,and craft.

When you’re at your fave restaurant, where are you & what do you order?

If I’m dining casually, I’d be at Culver’s eating one of the kid’s meals! (I like the included scoop of ice cream, and the meal is the right size.) I also like Mexican food, but I take half of my meal home to eat later so I can have Mexican fried ice cream.

Did I say that I like ice cream?

What is your favorite movie or book of all time?

I first saw these movies on TV but now have my own copies: A Nun’s Story (Audrey Hepburn) and Heidi (Shirley Temple). Although the Amish books by Beverly Lewis rank at the top of my list, my all-time favorite book is Joy in the Morning.

What’s one of your most humorous moments at LLHS?

A group in Foods was making carrot cake. While cracking eggs, quite a few shells fell in the batter, but the students felt that would be okay because carrots are crunchy and no one would notice the shells. They were wrong -- we all noticed!.

What’s one of your most heartwarming moments of your time at LLHS?

Seeing my former Eastside Lutheran preschoolers as high school students has been very heartwarming. Morgan Turnquist was one of those students. I had the privilege of being her preschool teacher and later having her as a Lakeside student. When I was able to return to teaching after God spared my life in a car accident, Morgan spent her last semester at Lakeside in my sewing class. She was taken to heaven that summer.

Though January saw an unexpected 5-day weekend with some icy days that kept students home January 16–17, Teens for Christ managed to still organize “Life Week,” when speakers on various life issues came in to speak to religion classes, teens could participate in a baby bottle coin collection, and were encouraged to dress in pink and blue to celebrate life. As the balloons around campus reminded us, “Smile! Your mom chose Life!”

An always fun annual January event is “Warrior for a Day,” when 220 Federation 7th graders joined the faculty and some student helpers on campus for a morning of what’s it’s like as a LLHS student, and then fellowship with a pizza lunch and a roller-skating outing. Willing to help with big 2017 student plans?

More than 150 Warrior teens have exciting plans to take their knowledge, skills and energy out into the world, representing their Savior and school this spring and summer. Are you able to help them get there? Here’s how you can show your support: Look for Warrior musicians as they share the opportunity to support travel expenses through the purchase of pizza, popcorn, Kringles, Lake Mills Culver’s discount cards and more! A Cappella singers will be singing in several Arizona WELS churches this spring break, and the Warrior Band is headed to St. Louis for the 4th of July week.

Mission-minded students are sharing their faith in VBS and sports camps weeks at WELS congregations across the country this summer in Alaska, Texas, Idaho, Louisiana and New Jersey. While students help fund their own travel, they are also volunteering at Twice Is Nice Resale in Jefferson Saturdays this semester in thanks for a donation from the store. They also appreciate prayers and offerings from their home congregations, family, friends and LLHS supporters. Donations can be sent to Operation Go at Lakeside Lutheran HS, 231 Woodland Beach Rd.
