Today, America is disunited. The uncooperative spirit among our people has cultivated national dysfunctionality and strife.

God warns that in the final days “people will be lovers of themselves....boastful, proud...ungrateful, unholy” (2 Timothy 3:2). Our Savior also alerts us, “There will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now - and never to be equaled again” (Matthew 24:21).

It’s unsettling, but it’s the reality of life.

In the midst of discord and disunity come God’s comforting assurances. His writers warn us of the worst. But, they also encourage us to trust his promises.

First, God encourages us to live holy lives. “Be on your guard so that you may not be carried away....Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:17-18). By faith, we serve God and our fellowmen. We glorify him when we demonstrate Christlike love for others.

Secondly, he encourages us to grow spiritually stronger. Good works are not a Means of Grace. Rather, they come from saving faith. They are spiritual exercise to strengthen us.

Just as weightlifters train their muscles, exercising our faith through godly living trains us to “walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us” (Ephesians 5:2).

It is unlikely that our nation will easily overcome its current societal disarray.

Thank God for his comforting Word that guides us in these trying times.

By faith, we serve him and others following Christ’s example of humility, love, and service.

5 questions GC faculty “Five Questions with the Faculty” is a light-hearted look at the teaching staff at Lakeside Lutheran High School. This edition features Mr. Paul Bauer, who began his ministry at LLHS in 1994, and currently teaches Biology and Speed/Strength classes. One of three Bauers on campus, he also serves as head coach for varsity football and JV2 boys basketball.

According to Mr. Bauer, he also “loves to drive bus for sporting events.” Here are some other things you might or might not know about Paul Bauer:

paul bauer Lakeside is the third stop in his teaching ministry. He was assigned from DMLC in 1979 to a 2-room school in Hoskins, Nebraska and served for five years as principal, upper grades teacher and, “believe it or not...Senior Choir Director,” he shares. He then served 10 years in San Jose, first as vice-principal, athletic director, and 7th grade teacher, and then as principal for 5 years. “Those ten years,” he shares, “provided a wonderful opportunity to serve in a mission field and work with people from diverse cultures and religious backgrounds.”

He and his wife Rebecca are empty-nesters. Their children—all LLHS grads— are Matthew (‘99), Jonathan (‘00) and Sarah (‘04). All are married and have given the Bauers seven grandchildren. Paul and Becky are members at St. Paul in Lake Mills.

What is your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?

Hunt or fish.

When you’re at your fave restaurant, where are you & what do you order?

El Mariachi’s in Lake Mills — Super Mucho Grande Quesadilla.

What is your favorite movie or book of all time?

The Bible, of course.

What’s one of your most humorous moments at LLHS? Unintentionally discharging an EpiPen into my thumb during an in-service.

What’s one of your most heartwarming moments of your time at LLHS? Getting to teach the children of students I taught years ago.

student news E notes:

Advent at LLHS was filled with a spirit of gratefulness and giving They sold every last crumb! $336.06 was raised during a Teens for Christ bake sale that took place December 6–7, when dozens of students brought in 100s of homebaked goodies and sold them before school to other students and staff. We thank Thrivent Financial for giving an action team grant for another $250. The funds supported the effort of Kingdom Workers who will offer VBS in Linares, Chile.

Weekend Warriors from PC’s sophomore religion classes helped Pastor Jon Bauer’s Mt. Horeb mission church (son of LL teacher Paul Bauer) hand out cookies and invites to Christmas worship at Good News Ev. Lutheran and at Resurrection in Verona with Pastor Strutz. Other sophs volunteered with “Christmas for Kids” weekends in December at Abiding Shepherd with Pastor A in Cottage Grove.

National Honor Society and Teens for Christ helped Mrs. Sandi Corlett, our Family and Consumer Ed teacher, wrap shoebox gifts for the homeless and underprivileged in Madison. This is part of a larger family effort for the Corlett family. All year long, her daughters Catherine (LL ‘01), Susan (‘98), and Sarah (‘05) gather personal care items, school supplies, toys and clothing. Mrs. C & others donate items, boxes, gift wrap, labels, tape—enough for 325 shoeboxes this year.

Teens for Christ also organized an all-school food drive for the Lake Mills Food Pantry that brought in 100s of non-perishables for the community!

Student Council ran an end-of-semester mission offering in chapel on three designated Fridays that raised over $1,000 for an Ethiopian village whose students need school supplies and equipment. Blessed to benefit others with our abundance!

December also brought the excitement of announcing a new summer of Operation Go mission trip teams. 32 Warriors are assigned to one of six trips across the country to assist congregations with Gospel outreach efforts, including WELS churches in Alaska, Texas, Idaho, Louisiana and New Jersey. Look for posters in your own federation church to see if one or more of your teen members was chosen for this privilege, and surf to llhs.org/opgo to read more about the opportunity our teens have been given for the coming summer!

Finally, students of our National Honor Society chapter caroled at nursing homes in Lake Mills and Watertown to spread cheer and praise the Savior right before Christmas.

That’s a service project that always ends up being a win-win as the singers are uplifted as much as those being sung to!
